Ok .. so every one has there favorite draft pick for the upcoming draft. Been there done that. We all know we may need a CB, WR, DE, MLB in the draft. NOW lets ask ourselves (our own bias aside) at pick 9 whick player available has the potential to be not a good player, not a great player, but a Hall of fame pro-bowl every year player. We got one last year with Sean Taylor, who has the potential to be one of ther greatest safties to every play. There is a differnce between good players and hall of fame players. We need the one hall of fame upside.
Is Mike Williams The Next Randy Moss or Keyshawn
Is Antrel Rolle The Next Deion or Charles Woodson
Is Brylon Edwards The Next Chris Carter or Desmond Howard
Is Troy Williamson The Next Jerry Rice or Torry Holt
Is Pac Man Jones The Next Darrell Green or some average corner
Is Health Miller The next Shannon Sharpe or Jeremy Shockey
Is Shawne Merriman The Next DE freak or some undersized DE
Is Erasmus James The next bruce smith or Courtney Brown
-I was biased towards Mike Williams but after asking myself this question, I may be leaning towards pac man Jones. I see him being closer to Darrell Green, than any of the other draft picks to great hall of fame player. Don't get me wrong the other players are good but not at that upper level.
The Question is who has the most Unique upside hall of fame potential in the draft? It was clear last year that it was Sean Taylor (A BEAST and Freak)
Who every it is thats who we should draft not only on needs.

Not to nit-pick your post, but it seems like with each player, you are trying to cite great outcomes and busts, but Torry Holt is one of the best WR's of the past 10 years and Shockey has had a pretty good career so far and is still young.
Anyway, you have a very good point, and it gets at the draft for need vs. draft the best player available debate. Although I think we have "needs" at WR, MLB, CB, and DE, I don't think they are "musts." Given our cap situation and lack of picks, I think we'll trade down and get the best players available when we pick, regardless of position.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing. Plus I wouldn't consider woodson a bust. But, I do agree with the sentiment. I say we get the Best Available player on the board. I don't think we're going to have the opportunity to trade down (unless we work it into a Gardner trade).

If you could predict which players would be "HOF bound" you'd be the highest paid GM in the league but you aren't; because it's impossible.

I think that Williams will be jumping on the table about Rolle he reminds me of Shawn Springs.

Is Mike Williams The Next Randy Moss or Keyshawn Better than either - less talent but more effort than Moss, more of both than Keyshawn.
Is Antrel Rolle The Next Deion or Charles Woodson Rolle is too slow to be Deion and not a big enough Kornhole to be Woodson. the new 5-yard bump rule will hurt Rolle.
Is Brylon Edwards The Next Chris Carter or Desmond Howard A complete cypher to me. All the physical ability in the world but what is between his ears and in his heart will determine his impact. I haven't heard any news from his interviews to make an assessment.
Is Troy Williamson The Next Jerry Rice or Torry Holt No.
Is Pac Man Jones The Next Darrell Green or some average corner Darrell Green is unique in the universe, there can be only one. Pac man can be very good in the right system. I wouldn't ask him to play zone a lot.
Is Health Miller The next Shannon Sharpe or Jeremy Shockey Miller is slower than Sharpe but runs and cuts well enough. Shannon's mental grasp of the game was what set him apart, however. With the right mentor, Miller could really do some things. He is a much better blocker and less of a head-case than Shockey.
Is Shawne Merriman The Next DE freak or some undersized DE This is the $40M question. He could be Dexter II. He weighed in at 270 recently and Dexter never played above 275. Shawn has the frame for it. He is a gamble in round one, though, no question.
Is Erasmus James The next bruce smith or Courtney Brown He is as good as neither.
With the loss of Peirce and Barrow a question mark due to age and injury, I would lean towards DJ if Williams is gone or a trade down for Miller or Channing Crowder if Crowder's head seems screwed on straight.

First of all, the comparisions are not to show potential busts because Holt, Woodson and shockey are good players. The point is to show the separation between great year to year players and potential to be a Hall of fame dominating players .
:sfight:
Now, Shawne Merriman is the $40 million dollar question. If he can play DE their is no doubt we should take him at pick 9. He would have the potential to have unique speed and ability at his position. We've seen players like Jones, Rolle, Williams, Edwards, miller, and Willimson at there positions before. But we may not have seen too many players with Merrimans ability.

I agree that he is a serious talent and I would LOVE IT if he fell to us. that would gaurantee us a trade partner to move down.

I've been on the Mike Williams bandwagon and never paid much attention to Shawne Merriman. But this guy could be the missing link on our defense. The way Gregg Williams uses all kinds of different defensive formations, this guy could fit in great as a OLB/DE 'tweaner. I won't be unhappy if we get him.

So many of you want to draft a corner. So we draft one, even though Garnell Wilds all but shut down Randy Moss during the last game of the season and Harris may have a couple of good years left or Jimoh might be the next surprise....and we end up with 4 or 5 good cornerbacks....thats great.
Meanwhile our defensive linemen STILL can't get near the QB. How about we find at least ONE pass rusher to help out all these cornerbacks...who are worthless when a QB has 5-6 seconds to pass?

Positions always in demand that are rare are somene who can rush the passer DE and protect the passer LT.
We can find a corner back and Big Wide receiver.
Lets take a pass rusher with the most upside and thats Merriman.
