Not until 2006 when the NFL awards compensatory picks to teams that lost more than they gained (which by the way only incents cheap owners to let every one walk - it is a STUPID rule).

i know with an unrestricted free agent you dont get a pick, but each year in like in the 5th round a lot of team get a compensational type of pick. i am not sure how all of this works.

agreed. They should make a rule like the NBA has about keeping your current players, that's the only way to stop all the moving around, except for coles type's.

basically each year the NFL has some formula they apply to award picks to teams who lost more than they gained in FA. it is stupid. i wish the nfl would allow teams to pay their players a little more but not have them count as much against the cap (similar to the NBA like candeeman mentioned).

The redskins signed 2 UFAs (Patten and Radack) and has lost 2 UFAs (Pierce and Smoot), the only difference is the size of the contracts. Since Smoot and Pierce have much larger contracts, should they play most of the year, the Skins might get a very low round (6 or 7) pick.
Had either Radack or Patten not been signed, the Skins probably would have received a 3rd rounder.

I believe it also has to do with the +/- impact of the players and not just the cortract size.

We lost two UFAs (Pierce and Smoot) and acquired two UFAs (Rabach and Patten). I doubt we get any compensation but I dont know how they figure that (since Smoot was a former first rounder, etc.)

It is a net loss of free agents that determines compensatory picks. I don't think it considers whether they are an 'impact' as they is impossible to define.

It doesnt matter where they are drafted if they are UFAs leaving(smoot was a second by the way), but the money amounts could matter when Compensatory picks are doled out.
BUt they wont be much and they wont be high. Dont get y'all hopes up.

actually smoot was a second round pick, that was the only reason we were able to get him.

If we do get a pick we will just trade them away for one year players and has-beens.
3rd rounder for Brunell
5th rounder for Thrash
5th rounder for Morton
1st rounder for Coles
6th rounder for Bowen
Last I heard decent players do come out of the draft past the 5th round... see Tom Brady, Derrick Blaylock, McCants, AJ Feeley, KGB, Dante Hall, Marc Bulger, Dhani Jones, and Morant.

Yeah, but there a lot of crappy players drafted in the second day. Probably about 10 bad ones for every good one.

I don't think compensatory picks are any higher than 3rd rounders by rule, are they?

Cinncinatti was awarded a three last year. Philly had two 4th rounders last year (plus a 6th?), a 4th and a 5th the year before. TB, St.L., Bal., Tenn, NYJ,...have all got 4ths-plus others
