If you want to start out well in GT4, do this:

Get both B & A licenses. Then save up about 20,000 and buy a used Suburu impreza. Put a new wing on it, change the oil and buy a small upgrade: weight reduction is always good. Then go to "Special Conditions" and race the second rally from the top(amalfi). Win both races, and the car you get is worth 260,000 credits. Repeat as much as you want.

Also: make sure you keep one of the Toyoda rally cars you get for a prize from that rally, upgrade it to the max and win all the rally. You'll get loaded quickly and be able to buy/upgrade all the car you will need for the first few circuits. Be sure to do it enough to buy a Ford GT and upgrades and no-one will stop you for a long time.

Thanks for the tips, I just bought a used copy of GT4 on ebay. I should have it early next week.

That tip will help you blast through the first half of the game real quickly.

There's always a trick like that in every GT game. Thanks for the info.
