I read today that the Dolphins are looking for maybe a second or third round pick for CB Patrick Surtain. The Kansas City Chiefs have been in talks, but they are proposing their fourth round pick. I think that this would be a good pick up for us. What do you guys think?

Surtain is a good CB but we can not afford to give up any picks this year. And I am not sure fe fits into our cap situation right now.

Surtain is a partier who has benefited from having four HOFers playing defense with him. Pass.

He's solid and probably has a few good years left in him (he's 28), but he's looking for an 8 mill signing bonus and a long term deal....for that kind of money, I'd rather go with a younger guy like Dyson. Although, I wonder if the Dolphins would consider Surtain for Gardner straight up....they could definitely use some help at receiver....not that I would consider Gardner "help", but other teams seem to think he has some value.

If he's looking for that much money then I agree we should pass as well. We don't have the ability to give him an 8 million signing bonus. If that number were decreased I would be all for shipping our 3rd round pick for him, then trading down in the 1st round to pick up a second rounder this year. We only have 2 picks in the first three rounds and if we did this senario we would actually be in much better shape as we'd have no need to draft a DB with the #9 pick anymore and we'd most likely find better talent with that 2nd round pick. We then could pick the best players availible on the board, not forced to pick DB at the #9 position as I feel we are now.
I don't fault the man for partying in Miami, I would do that as well. Why do some many players want to go to Miami? To party of course!!!
His link to 4 potential HOF'ers in the same system is not something to hold against him either. In our Defense he would surely shine as he has shined in Miami

I would like to point out that Surtain has one year left on his deal at 6 million(without bonus). Pass.
And if a player played with four HOFers, you have to wonder how he would do with them around him. If he's so great, how come Miami's only got a fourth rounder offered for him?

I agree, 6 million is too much to pay for his services, we have to pass on this one.
I guess you could say that if someone played with 4 potential HOF'ers (thats not a certainty look at Monk's status) they might have overblown stats but with Surtain I doubt he's a bad football player without those guys. I believe coupled with the fact he's owed 6 million for next year and he's a FA next season the Dolphins aren't getting much action on Surtain much like were not getting that much intrest for our contract WR Gardner. If he was signed to a decent long term contract then I bet he'd be moved already

Too expensive. I would be fine if we got a 3rd rounder for Gardner and traded one of our 3rd roudners for Surtain, but we can't fit his cap number under our current cap situation. He would have to restructure bigtime.

But he would benefit here too with this defense... Not saying I want him with his contract right now, but just saying he would be good with us under GW.

Exactly. We need the picks and he want to have a new deal in place before the trade.

Gardner for Surtain? Hmmmm.

I like Surtain. I believe he would fit in nicely here but it isnt feasible to get him here with so few picks. I would however trade our fourth rounder which is higher than the chiefs if that is what they are offering for him to the dolphins in a heart beat because he will be better than any fourth rounder we get. (expensive yes but a good corner and young yes)

Gardner for Surtain? Hmmmm.
there's no chance of this happening. never reached 1st round potential WR for a good corner?
if he came cheap, i'd get him. but for the money he's talking about, PASS

I would wait and see how the draft unfolds. If we get a corner fairly high, then pass on Surtan. If not, we need to take a serious look at him because he is still young enough to have 3-5 good years left. Obviously, any trade for him needs to be conditioned upon his restructuring his contract so as to be compatible with our current cap situation.

I see Surtain as a Rent-a-Player type. You only get 1 year of him, so if you think you're a CB away from the SB, I'd make the trade. We're not a player away.
