I would think that Byner should have had a big say in blocking schemes and the running game in general. Portis got almost 1500 yds without much help from the line.
How do you think Byner did last season?

I don't really know how to tell. The RBs seems to give 100% and were great blockers, with the exception of the occasional whiff by Betts. I guess that means he did well.

Hard to judge after just one year.
With no down field passing game, a makeshift offensive line, new system and a new RB, I would say he did a fine job.

How do we know Byner didn't have a say in the blocking schemes and running game?
With that said I think he did a solid job. Portis was great but could improve with a better blocking scheme in front of him. And Betts looked his best IMO filling in for Portis.

It is hard to judge a RB coach when your offensive system did not tailor to the style of the RB until late season, and then you had miserable play from Center and your starting OT, the bedorkc of the Line, went down to injury.

Thanks, Thats what I was thinking myself. Hopefully with a better line and play calling it will improve. I really like to see Byner do well as he is one of our younger offensive coaches.
Anybody know much about Hixon other than that his son is doing much better?

Byner did a marvelous job. Why? Are you kidding me. With a pourous Oline and absolutely no passing game for most of the season Portis still had almost 1400 yds. Betts improved. Portis has mentioned how tough those yds were. Byner is an integral part and excellent mentor for both young and impressionable players Portis and Betts.
In my book its an A for what he had to work with ie. no passing game, banged up oline.

Graded out on coaching staffs and the like, Byner on a scale of 1-10, was a fabulous 8.5 if you asked me.
He took a back in Betts who was possibly either trade bait or released and worked with him, he redid Rock's approach on goal line plays and he exploited defenses with his Backs being able to catch the ball more than 50-50!
He showed Portis how to execute an option in a Gibbs offense, more complicated than it looks, because the keys to read are different than almost all NFL offenses.
consider the improvement of the line, Portis, Betts, and the depth in NFLE, Cooley, and Rock's role on short yardage optionals (he can still do wonders on ST too).
Now add Sellers penchant for wanting to hit somebody.

Well, if your judging Byner based upon the following:
Portis tore up the field, with little to no OL
Portis got nearly 1500 yards with no passing game
Betts looked like Earl Campbell against the Vikes and in other limited play
No RB's fumbled inside the 5 yardline in the AFC Championship game
...then I'd say he did a pretty spectacular job. I can't wait to see what this running game looks like once these Dirtbags get it together.

Man that was cold.
Seriously Byner did good for a rookie coach and the proof is not in Portis. Talent can make a bad coach look good and a great coach look great.
The proof is in Betts. for two years Betts sat on a shelf not really being used to his effectiveness. He was last year and will be even more next year.
Now on to Rock. Can he become a small short yardage running back?

No. We really don't have the roster space for that. If not CP, that'll be relegated to Betts, IMO.

I think Byner did a great job, and Gibbs & Co. are molding him into a great coach. Like ShaggySkins when he said that we don't know if he had any say in blocking schemes and such. Considering he had no Center and no Jansen, I think Byner did a great job coaching the backs.

We have roster space for 3 runningbacks, maybe 4 depending on the needs of the team. In a regular team you need 3 running backs, 2 fullbacks, and 3 TE. In a gibbs the fullbacks are now h backs but the rest is the same. Rock was our 3rd rb last year. Not sure Simon can beat him out this year. Rock also plays special teams.
Betts on third down is pretty good though too.
