Replacement parts: Rating how holes being filled
March 30, 2005
By Pete Prisco / SportsLine.com Senior Writer
~ ~ ~ Redskins CB Fred Smoot to the Vikings
Smoot is one of those smooth cover players who should never have been allowed to leave. The Redskins, though, didn't have the cap room to keep him. That will hurt. What's worse is they don't have a quality player to take over. Veteran Walt Harris will get the first crack, but he's not a top-notch corner anymore. Look for the Redskins to possibly use their first-round pick on a corner.
Rate the replacement: If they get Antrel Rolle of Miami in the first round, ;) they'll be fine . If they don't get him or Adam "Pac-Man" Jones, they could see a lot of passes thrown at Harris.
~ ~ Redskins LB Antonio Pierce to the Giants
The Giants got one of the best young linebackers in the game, a player who will be sorely missed in Washington. Pierce came out of nowhere to become a quality starter last year when Micheal Barrow was hurt. Pierce played all of the Redskins' defensive plays, which shows how tough and versatile he is. The Redskins expect Barrow to step back in as a starter, but age has eroded his skills. He has slowed too much.
Rate the replacement: Bad. This is a big hit for the Redskins.
~ NOT to worry; you guys will be fine :awesomewo

I'm not as concerned as some about Pierce. We lost two of our three starting LB's and they were replaced more than adequately with relative no-names. Why should we not expect that Williams and staff will find suitable replacement if Barrow can't do it?

I agree, if anything I'm more concerned about a weak link at corner in a defensive scheme that relies on great cover ability. That worries me more than a MLB spot who will have a pro bowler on each side of him. But bottom line is if we didn't have a confident plan on how to replace both of these guys then Coles never would have been traded and we would have overpaid to keep them both.

I'm not sweating it. In fact I think our defense will better next season with a healthy Arrington and Bowen plus whoever we pickup in the draft. Take that negativity and blow it out your @$$.

Agreed. One of the best young linebackers in the Game? Whatever happen to the BEST being thos ethat perform consistently at a high level. Pierce has one godo season, that is it so far!

Yeah, last time I checked two of the best young linebackers in the league are actually still on our team, guys who have both made pro bowls. Prisco needs to put down that hyperbole sandwich he's got there.

Hint:
We have a sleeper "tweener" at TE from USC - do you know his name?
go here: http://www.redskins.com/team/profile.jsp?id=5294
Ran track, and had a "high" for the jump at 6 ft and 9.75 in. A leaper and big possible threat at the goal line : 6-4 235

It's funny how that article calls Pierce one of the best young LBs in the NFL. A year ago, any team could have had him at the minimum tender, yet only Minny showed interest. Nothing against Antonio, I think he played great last year, but the system has to be a factor.

Typical overstating of Redskin players when they are no longer with the organization. I'm sorry media guys, try as you like but we're not going to lose sleep after losing out on a solid corner and a one-year starter UFA.

Hahaha I was thinking this last night. I went over to my friend's house and we played some Xbox madden with the originial rosters...guess what he is? A 67 overall as a ROLB. In the updated rosters he's a 86 as a MLB.
You think people actually gave a crap about AP before this year? No. They had no idea who he even was. Now he's "one of the best young linebackers in the NFL". That may be true, but not as much as they hype him up to be.

Hey, everyone was saying the same things about Trotter when he bolted for DC, then we all saw how important the system was to him. I wish Pierce better than Trotter, but I wouldn't mind it if he found his way back to us in the future. Pierce was very solid for us in a fantastic defensive scheme, he'll be no better than very solid for anyone else.

a healthy Barrow playing MLB by committe with Marshall (playing nickel and dime packages) could be an upgrade over Pierce.
Rolle or Pac Man are a definate upgrade over Smoot.
LaVar and Daniels back healthy.
these are the facts....hey there all positive.......our D will rock in 05 :flower1:

First of all yes, kelly we don't need to hear this old news, take a hint.
But c'mon get a grip, lets not be harsh on pierce cause he left, how many of you were wanting to roll heads when pierce didn't make the pro-bowl. As far as I know last year was Pierce's first year starting and not only did he do all the physical things to dominate at his position he dominated the defense from a mental standpoint. So in my book he is one of the best young LBs in the nfl. He could be a total bust, a product of the system, but so could sean taylor. I am giving taylor the benefit of the doubt and I am sure you would give pierce the benefit of the doubt if he was still with us.

we will be fine wait till the giants drop pierce into coverage they will regret giving him allt hat money,he may very well be a product of GW and with our ninth pick i see one of the stud corners we will be fine, barrows rehab is going well(supposedly)if not we have clifton smith, lemar marshall, khary campbell to battle for the spot. we will be fine.

I wasn't being harsh at all. You should have put my entire quote in that post.
I was just saying a year ago he was a backup LB, special teamer. He has a great season under GW and suddenly he is one of the best young LB's in the NFL?
Don't get me wrong, I wish we could have kept him but he wasn't worth what the Giants gave him.

i didn't allude to your whole quote cause i saw a whole handful of people that said this and just wanted to reference it once.
Exactly he got his chance this year and he played like a rockstar. If we want to chalk everything up to GW then we should be skeptical on griffen, washington, taylor, etc. GW's system made everyone look good but that doesn't mean that everyone isn't good.
Don't forget that on the field Pierce ran the system.

Again going back to my original post, Pierce played great.
I liked Pierce before this year, I thought he was very good depth. This past year he showed he was a very smart starting player who could be the captain of one of the best defenses' in the league.
Should we have given him a bigger contract than what the Giants did?
Is it possible that Gregg Williams can do the same with another player? We still have Barrow also, who was supposed to be the starter last year, although I personally think he is done.
Anyway, I just wanted to point out that I was in no way disrespecting Pierce, I was just saying how now that he is gone the press acts like he was the best player on our team.

A one year wonder at MLB.{thanks to a defensive scheme} and a good, not great DB are gone. Our D-linemen are strong enough to to tie up the o-line men and and keep the Qb. in place for 3, yes count them 3 of the Nlf's elite Linebackers to put the Qb. down or to give him no time to throw the ball. Our Db's are solid enough to cover and God help any reciever dumb enough to go over the middle because our safties are hitting machines who will cause recievers to refuse routes and Offensive cord's to change game plans by the third game. Oh yes I think Coaches Gibb's and Williams have a plan to cover the one position that Smoot left open. SOOOOO, don't worry,{ musical interlude} be happy :) !

Akh...the article Kelly posted was from Wednesday.
Guys...either talk about the article, or don't post in the thread.
The article basically says; "Skins will be fine w/out Smoot if they draft a CB...and losing Pierce will hurt the Defense". Big whoop. Far from the "negative" stuff we hear from Pastabelly on a weekly basis.
And by the way...do "positive" articles even exist about the Redskins? Until we start winning, we probably won't see many.

Pierce is a good player but not a great one. He'll continue to be a solid contributor but I'm not sure about "one of the best young LBs in the game" label yet. He had a good year last year but David Boston had 1 good year too. Let's wait and see how he performs this year to see how good he really is.
