ASHBURN, Va. -- Running back Rock Cartwright re-signed with
the Washington Redskins on Wednesday.
Cartwright played in 13 games last season, contributing mostly
on special teams. He rushed for 411 yards on 107 carries in 2003.

I love this! Rock is the man!! I hope he puts some weight back on and becomes a short yardage back again. He was excellent at lowering his head and getting tough yards, I have no idea why he Joe Gibbs wanted him to lose the weight in the first place.

Interesting - I wonder if the team asks him to put back on the weight he lost last year?

ST monster for sure.

Short yardage specialist, to back up Betts.

I could be wrong but I thought it was his current position coach(Ernest Byner) that had him lose the weight to be a regular TB since the Skins don't really use a true FB.

Good special teams move. looks like we have really made the special teams better from last year.

You are right. Byner asked him to lose weight since Gibbs doesn't use fullbacks. It was Byner, not Spurrier.

Great to hear it, he is a major "behind the scenes" guy when it comes to the success of the team.....

Rock is a good player for ST's and with one more year at RB, showed that once he gets more time with a familiar system can do a little damage, even on valve pass catching.

This opens a door also for a possible move for a NFLE player at RB to have a shot later in the season.

i thought it was spurrier since he was asked to move from a FB to a hb with trung....guess not

I think Ron Warner was the other RFA that was tendered an offer and has not yet signed. Friday is the last day that other teams can make offers, so we should see them sign soon after that.

I think Ron Warner is signed, I know he was tendered. Betts is a better all purpose back but Rock has potential to be a Bettis-like specialist if he gains his weight back. It was Byner who got him to lose the weight, and I don't think just signing a guy to play special teams is a good move, anybody can do that, like Sellers and Prieoleau (however you spell it) a RB on the roster should make a difference, like Rock did for two years prior to last year.

He's a good, fiesty special teams guy. I don't mind this signing, and I welcome Rock to continue with our team.

i'm a major fan of rock, i remeber the good old days when they'd put him at tailback behind bryan johnson at fullback and just crush people for the yards, he was a bit of a phantom last season, but with the wieght he proved he could get the tough yards and i hope gibbs keeps him in mind when looking for who will be our short yardage back, all the best to you rock

not to show disrespect to all you guys saing things like this, but honestly, if we didnt re-sign him, where the hell else would he go? its not like he was a guy in demand. it was either here or nowhere for rock, and he chose here. i'm glad he's back for consistency, but this is really nothing to be excited about.

2 more days and their ours again :)
Rock for short yardage....OOOOYEAH!....I know our big $$$back and Betts can do alright but put the weight back on the Rock and he just power explodes through any little crevis he can find......didn't he have a great success % in 03 ?

 Unless he puts back on the weight he lost, and becomes a factor again in the short-yardage game.

I know he is a little too small and a little too slow to be a RB in the Redskin offense but I always loved Rock and he got lost in the Lavar mess and Schedule release yesterday.

I am glad Rock is back with the team. He always does what everyone asks him. Championship teams need little guys who overachieve. Rock is providing his part.

one of the best red zone threats. Not sure if volume would have effected his effectiveness, because he is such a Warrior - yeah Warrior.

Everytime I see the title of this thread I think Rock quit (resigned).... when actuality, he re-signed.

Good news! I like Rock and met him (chatted for like 5 minutes or so) at the draft party last year.

GWBlitzST

Rock has abililties that no one else on the squad has, he has an incredibly low center of gravity and he's kind of hard to pick up coming out of the backfield because he's so short. If he puts weight back on, I see him scoring at least a couple of td's for us, otherwise I'm sure he'll be a strict ST player, which I disagree with having a roster spot for. It's him or John Simon on opening day, who would you guys rather see on the roster?

MoeRedskins
04-14-2005, 11:07 AM
Definately Rock over Simon, Rock has got to fix that fumbling problem of his. But to be honest with you I don't see either one of these guys making the roster come september.

Dahrran Deidrick is my dark horse to make the roster behind Betts.
The size, youth and athleticism allows him room to grow sufficiently to be a feature back. Has the size for inside game too.

Also wanted to add that Dahrran Deidrick, allocated to NFLE to me is a "steal" because he was unfortunately put behind two great backs of our time (Ladelien Tomlinson of SD and Ahman Green of GB), and try to make the team, apparently not possessing all the skills "just yet". The fact that Gibbs still thinks he has something to offer, like Shottenheimer and Stewart, is not a coincidence.

I'm glad we resigned him. Gotta keep a guy named Rock. Now he's just got to stop fumbling

Excellent point. These guys know backs (even though Shotty cut Larry Centers).

Ended career at Nebraska with 2,745 yards, eighth best in Cornhusker history, on 502 carries; also posted 26 TDs...Ran for 1,299 yards as a senior with six TDs.

He is pretty big. This was with Eric Crouch getting all those rushing yards too.
