I figure kickoffs are the only way he can make the roster if Tupa sticks around. Especially since we might end up carrying 2 kickers. Hmmm, camp fodder?

OK now. Let me remind everyone how Tom did last year. 1st in the NFC, 3rd in the NFL. Remember the Detroit game (especially!!!). Andy will be sent packing before pre-season ends. Sorry Andy!! He is a Buckeye, BTW!!!

OK, back to the day before Draft Day stuff!! :lol1:

i couldnt get to the link...were terms of the deal released? i hate to say it, but we could save upwards of 2 million in cap space, if we replace Tupa and John Hall.

There is no way he is taking tupa's job. Tupa is awesome, but he might be suseptable to injury because of his age so I dont mind the pickup of this kid

hmmmm....wonder if this younger guy could end up doing that...and chandler replacing hall?...doesnt chandler have more range?

*shrugs* good to know if we can save that much....there is our emergency cap room if we need it. would like to keep tupa and hall though, both are proven and accurate.

Jeff Chandler 2005 .380
John Hall 2005: 1.420M 2006: 1.420M 2007: 1.820M
Tom Tupa 2005: 0.934 2006: 0.939 2007: 0.939
i dont know what the new punter would get, maybe the minimum, like Chandler.

Too late!!

You have to forget about the age thing. Look at Hall. All those injuries, younger guy. Will he ever come back? Tom has 3 years left on his contract. I expect him to hang until then. Forget about his age!!!!!!!!! Tom is one HEALTHY guy!!! :)

you're right, i think Tupa was more valuable than Hall last year.

Jeff Chandler 2005 .380
John Hall 2005: 1.420M 2006: 1.420M 2007: 1.820M
Tom Tupa 2005: 0.934 2006: 0.939 2007: 0.939

Tupa is worth his money, he is incredibly accurate with his punts. just ask Thrash. but Hall shouldnt get that much more to drop the kickoffs down around the 15 or 20. that's only 50 yards in the air, with a running start.

I wouldn't read anything into this. Most teams bring in extra kickers before deciding around final cuts who they will go into the season with. I can't see Groom taking Tupa's spot at this juncture, despite the difference in age. Kickers have more longevity in the NFL then any other position.

I'd rather have Tupa and Hall then the $2M. I'm just conservative like that.

John Hall has been anything but reliable for the skins

If Hall gets healthy, he's a top 5 or 10 kicker. If not, he's worthless.

I don't think he has any shot a Tupa's job. I don't know much about special teams calls, but let's assume there are nuances particular to each teams system. If that's the case it would make a lot of sense to bring in a punter for training camp so he could learn them. You cut him before the season and resign him if your punter gets hurt. The punter kind of gets screwed, but he's willing to go along with it as long as you tell him you're willing to let him show his stuff in the preseason.

Groom has been brought in for competition. Gibbs does not believe that any position shoudl be totally free. Tupa will be the punter. Groom is there just to push.

Hall's gonna have to beat our Chandler. Remember, groin injuries are reoccurring problems with NFL kickers and Gibbs wont put up with that. Chandler finished strong, Hall has a relatively big contract for a kicker. Hall shoudl win the job, but it will be a fight.

if you were tight against the cap and trying to manage it, a quick glance at the numbers would show Tupa's and Hall's numbers standing out to a degree, compared to cheaper younger talent. Tupa is awesome, there's nothing more he can do, but you could get younger there. Hall needs to be strong and healthy and get the kickoffs deeper.

Agreed. Plus the Punter position is another spot where Gibbs prefers older, veteran guys. He understand the importance of have a good kicker who can pin teams inside the 20, 10, and 5 yard line...

At the same time, Groom is the guy I was hoping we would draft 2 or 3 years ago. But instead, we took that QB that I can't think of his name. Gibran something...lol
