Very good read on another potential starter hidden behind a great.
He put up big numbers at Florida but wasn't drafted. He claims then-Florida coach Steve Spurrier helped torpedo his career by saying some not-so-nice things. Their relationship was never good in Gainesville, and it still isn't. To say that Johnson doesn't like Spurrier is the G-rated version.
Johnson told a story to illustrate their troubles. He said he was 2 yards short of breaking the school single-game passing record against Vanderbilt, but Spurrier took him out, saying he didn't deserve the record. To compound it, Spurrier then gave him a game ball that played up his having the second-highest one-game passing total. Johnson said he quickly disposed of it.
"We just didn't get along," he said.
So is he second to Woefull? I don't get that at all. Might show those comments about Spurrier and Woefull being very very close was taken to a VERY HIGH extreme. Crazzzy I tell you, regardless.

There is always something behind the scenes we do not see but that is an interesting story

interesting story.
Although it's only one side of the story...I'm sure Spurrier has a rebuttle somewhere for that. Fact is, the coach is usually correct in these things.

If it went down the way he said it...........that's cold. :(
Im sure there is more to it than his side but if not.............that's cold.... :(

Yeah, this is just one side of the story. He didn't call to get Spurrier's thoughts on the issue. Interesting bit on Arrington on that page as well. Talked about he needs to be reighed in to better the defense.

Doug Johnson was the worst starting QB of the Spurrier era at UF. The fact is that SOS came up with the rotating QB scheme against FSU because he couldn't trust Johnson to run two plays in a row without doing something stupid. Spurrier had Noah Brindise on the field for half the snaps against a 10-0 team with the #1 ranked defense in the country just so he could bring Doug to the sidelines and explain to him exactly what to do on the next play. For those of you that have never seen Noah Brindise throw a football, he makes Wuerffel look like John Elway.
I don't know the details on the Vandy incident, but there was definitely a lot of friction between the two. Spurrier's always going to have friction with quarterbacks that don't run his offense correctly. If Jessie Palmer could have ever stayed healthy it would have been a lot less of an issue because he would have beaten Doug out for the job fulltime.

Glad to hear about this from a Gator fan. I honestly did not follow the Gators so new nothing about this.

what intrigues me is why Spurrier recruited such a terrible QB?

What shocks me is that Johnson can actually get his name in a newspaper. He's so irrelevant you'd think the beat writers wouldn't pay any attention. Thats the NFL offseason for you. They'll latch onto any pointless, out-dated drissle and roll with it.

Yep. It didn't hurt anything that it paints just another negative picture of Spurrier.
