Shocking developments: Robinson and the Nationals coaching staff were stunned to learned that Endy Chavez made no improvements with the bat during his time in Triple-A New Orleans.

The left-handed-hitting Chavez usually handles himself very well against left-handed pitching. But to Robinson's dismay, he was overmatched against Giants southpaws Scott Eyre and Jason Christiansen on Sunday afternoon.

"He acted as if he had never faced left-handed pitching before," said Robinson. "I don't know why, because he was playing in New Orleans every day. Before that he was hitting lefties. I never platooned him against left-handers. He usually held his own pretty good."

Robinson feels that a change of scenery may be best for Chavez.

"It will probably be best for him, but we can't give players away unless [we] are going to get something back," he said.

Interim general manager Jim Bowden tried to trade Chavez during Spring Training but there were no takers.

The Nationals have been frustrated that Chavez has never learned how to get on base on a consistent basis.

This seems like a good trade for us, in 2003 Byrd hit .303 with 7 hr and 45 rbi.

Byrd has never really played well other than that 2003 season so I am not surprised to see him traded. I don't like the fact that the Phils traded him within the division but the Phils needed to do something in CF.Can someone give me a fan opinion on Chavez. The only thing I know about him is he is pretty good cf in MLB 2k5 :D

they are not shopping him anymore. I hope this trade helps both teams as these guys needed a change of scenery

I didn't follow the Expos last year, so the only opinion I have of him is that he has been horrible this year. In MVP 2005 he is pretty good though...

Chavez

The knock on Chavez is that his GEB percentage is pretty low...i.e. doesn't get on base enough...does not get "walks" often enough and hits bad pitches...impatient type...Does not listen well to instructions from Robinson who just gave up on him...to finally find a trading partner in the Phillies.

For a leadoff hitter, his on base percentage was horrendous. He had a chance to win the starting job in ST, but failed to make any adjustments or improvement in hitting. What oput this trade on the fast track as well was the injury to RP Joe Eischen. This allowed Robinson to recall Chavez. The team needs speed at the top of the order. BUT, Robinson and Staff were all stunned to see he made no progress or adjustments again.

It really was time to leave Chavez go.

As for Byrd? No clue, no nothing about him.

Right on point. Chavez hasn't done a thing for the Nats this year, and he could have been a fairly good leadoff man. I know nothing about Byrd except for that I've heard his name before? Phillies fans?

Byrd looked (and continues to look) great in AAA, then once he gets up to the bigs, he seems to choke. except for the 2003 season, he played well. im glad the phils got rid of him, but i hope he does well.

He did look great tonite, at the plate and in the field. made a nice catch that made it onto the MLB.com highlights.

Just when I thought i couldnt be more excited about more Nats players. I hope he keeps it up.

Byrd did look good last night, even though I think his first hit should have been ruled an error. I saw an interview after the game where he talked about not being able to find his swing all of last year so he worked on it the whole offseason. Apparently it paid off for him. Maybe a change of scenery is just what he needed.
