This is a not a poll that demands facts and figures or an intense, deep seated football knowledge. This poll is to gauge your opinion about our Head Coach and his activities during the off season.

Richmond, Va. Chevrolet 400 Race COACH SPEAK: Washington Redskins coach and NASCAR car owner Joe Gibbs and Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer covered a wide variety of subjects during a news conference several hours before the race."Beamer said he looks on with admiration as Gibbs guides the Redskins and keeps watch over the operations of his three Nextel Cup and two Busch teams.

Gibbs keeps an eye on his family buisness, but his son is running the day to day operations.
I think it's a good thing for Joe Gibbs and the Redskins don't suffer because of it.
I see no reason why he shouldn't go to the races.

Its his business, he should be keeping track of it.

The thing about Gibbs is a 60 or 70 percent effort from him is equivalent to someone elses 100 percent. I know that is not the actual statistics of time spent but that would be a comparison IMO. So YES it is fine for him to do whatever he wants to do outside the Redskins Organization.

It is okay. To assert that it isn't okay is on a par to say NFL coaches shouldn't be parents either, as that would take much more time than to look over a business your son runs anyway.

nuff said.

I would expect someone that owns a company to want to keep an eye on it. You can not expect someone to give every minute of his/her life to thier job. Joe will give us 10 times the effort as the old ball coach did

Gibbs left in '92 because of burn out and health. No need to go that route again. A little time off refreshes the mind and spirit.

Gibbs still gives us 100%......he puts as much or more time and effort into his team than any other coach in the NFL......I think he has a real good feel for what he can handle and if he did any more he would burn out (I know I would if I put in the hrs he did)

i voted yes. nascar is something he is going to continue to do once his time is up with the skins, there is no way he is going to stop getting involved.

i voted yes, but i just hope that he doesnt burn himself out.

YES! I don't think NASCAR is interferring w/ his focus at all. He showed w/ his work ethic last year, that matched his previous tenure as redskins coach, that NASCAR won't be a distraction. Even after vowing not to spend such long hours at Redskins park like he did the first time, he still did.

I say yes. It's his other passion and I don't see it being a distraction in any way during football. Gibbs knows whats first on his priority list.

I firmly believe he's being paid way to much to still be involved with NASCAR in anything other than as a fan. He should be 95 percent football and as for the other 5 well you gotta eat and sleep sometime.

I voted yes. We knew about his involvement when we hired him. Bad sportsmanship to complain now.

Gibbs was heavily involved with nascar before returning to our beloved skins. He gave up a great deal of this involvement to come and coach the skins and lead them back to the glory days. I believe that he has the right to have some involvement with nascar. We should be thankful that he is involved with the skins at all.

Two of my favorite coaches talking football and racing, what could be better than that? I have no problem with the way Gibbs is taking care of his business......

From what I understand he isn't very involved in NASCAR right now anyway, obviously when you have invested in something so costly and high profile as NASCAR teams you are going to want to have some involvement in it.

I heard an interview with one of Gibbs drivers[Bobby Labonte] this past week and he was asked about Gibbs involvement now and his knowledge of auto racing. Labonte said that Gibbs is not around the race team's much any more and when he is its just to give a pep talk.
Joe's son JD runs the day to day operations now. Labonte also said that Gibbs knew just enough about racing to be dangerous but he is smart enough to delegate all the details to qualified individuals. So basically he did this whole NASCAR thing to still be involved in competition but also to help his son and now he has handed over the reigns and is more or less a silent partner.
So my answer is yes, it's a good thing to get his mind off the stress of being a football coach and it's a way to spend some time with his family.

I think it is a good stress reliever for him. Joe and the long nights at the office (Redskins) were the cons of his first tenure, and seemingly are the norm for his second. Besides, NASCAR is not just a Gibbs passion, it is also his other livelihood. He can't turn a deaf ear to it. Would you if you were as successful as he is at it? I think the fact that his son is the more day to day Gibbs on location with the race scene lends credibility to his being focused on Redskins affairs. In all likelihood, that had very little to do, if at all, with the 6-10 (oh the horror). We just all went thru a season of growing pains and re-acclimations.

So I vote it is no problem, he can do both.

nascar certainly hasn't stopped him from spending nights at redskins park during the season to get this team ready to play. it's his family's business and something he'll be involved with "forever" as he put it a while back.. let the man enjoy something other than football.

I was going to say this, but noticed you beat me to it ;) . His family, mainly his son, run Gibbs racing. Joe is just in an owner capacity now, he is an owner/fan. has very little say in the day to day operations of "his" race team, by his own choices.

Was one of the first things he said when he came back, the Redskins is his main focus. He is spending nights at redskins park, not his (former) office at gibbs racing, his son does that. He is still giving us 100%+! i mean, day after surgery to open up a clogged artery he is back at work!.....HERE!! thats dedications....poll isnt really necessary

I don't think NASCAR has anything to do w/ how well he'll lead the skins. The man is an all-time great coach and he is a tireless worker. I am not worried one bit about him not being focused enough on the skins. I do worry that the game has changed and he cannot fully adapt to win another SB but as far as focus goes I have zero worries.

I was on Redskins.com checking out their new interviews. So far, Larry Michaels has asked every player to describe JG in one word and they all said "dedicated." That's all I need to know, and that will never change. He will give 100% no matter what sport it is, whether it's racing or football. Heck, he's better than Spurrier. Remember how much that guy played golf?

I say it is up to Gibbs. He is a grown man who has accomplished more in his life then any of us can hope to do. IF he thinks he has time for both then of course he does. If he thinks he needs to pull back on one or the other he will.

No matter how much time he spends on Nascar he will still triple the amount of effort Spurrier, schot,Turner put into this team.

Screw Nascar, I live very close to the Lowes Motor Speedway and hate the race traffic. It ruins 2-3 weeks out of my year. Nascar blows.

It depends on his extent of involvement. Based on what we've heard to date, I don't have a problem with it. This is off-season anyway.

I don't think Gibbs is doing much with Nascar anymore. No need to worry about him going to a race in May. He set up his Nascar team, so he could step away from it without having to manage one aspect of the business.
