The Redskins have just over $4M to spend on its rookies:

Middle of the pack, not bad. We need this money desperately. Good deal.

This is NOT new money added to the salary cap. It is just a cap on how much the Redskins can spend on rookie contracts within the current TEAM salary cap

Correct and since we are only roughly 2 million under the cap, we will have to clear another 2 million. Hmm, getting rid of what player that can't catch a cold and is no longer in our plans would give us that cap room? :inkston:

At the very least I hope we hold onto Rod into camp b/c I don't want him going to a team and having time to get into the playbook. I think Rod could really help a team like Philly who already has a couple burners for the long ball.

And you know they're just waiting for us to release him. I say come up with the $2M some other way. Rod ain't going anywhere unless we get a leat a 5th rounder for him. I'd release Raymer, Barrow and Morton instead as a start. Along with our existing cap room, that ought to cover the rookie pool.

i say cut em all. except people have been saying that it would cost more to cut morton at this point, so he'll prolly hang on another year, although this could mean that cartwright will be out of a job.

I agree. I think Gardner can play in this league and I'd rather make him ride the pine as inactive all season then let him go help the Iggles or Dallass.

Keep him? Who Rod "Hands of Stone" Gardner? Fiddy? That's a joke right?
If his name is an indication, perhaps we can use him to mow the lawn! But as a receiver, I don't think it will be hard to duplicate his production totals from last year: 51 catches, 650 yds., and 5 TDs. Cooley is closing in on those stats anyway, so bye Rod come June 1.
What are you gys talking about? We WANT him to play for a team in the NFC East! Better him dropping passes for them, than us!

We wont need the whole $4 million to sign the rookies. If Carlos Rogers is slated to count $1.8 million against the cap, it is really only $1.42 million in cap space because by signing him, it knocks one guy (making $380K) out of the top 51 counting against the cap. Same with Campbell; he will only be an additional $0.62 million once signed. The 4th through 7th rounders dont add much in cap space (maybe $200K total) since they will just knock others out of the top 51 who are making close to what they will get.
So, in the end, we will only need about $2.3 million to sign the rookies. If we have $1.5 million now, we are in good shape. Cutting Gardner or Barrow definately gets us where we need to be, but we could get away with just releasing Raymer and maybe Cartwright and/or Sellers. Either way, we can get there pretty easily, IMO.

Cartwright was out of a job after last season. He's on borrowed time.

And Nemo further emphasizes that notion.

We could've traded him for a 3rd rounder in February. The deal was that the FO would work to send him to a team he liked, and he would work with us on getting a contract done with the new team. Seems fair, right? Well, 50/50 didn't want to sign a new contract, he wanted to play out his existing contract and become a FA after this season which screwed us. As a result, nobody wanted to "rent" Rod for one year, so we're stuck with him.
I didn't say play him, I said keep him -- big difference. We need to play hardball with him. Personally, I'd send his whiney b*tch *ss a flatscreen a la Toevernius Coles and tell him to have a nice season sitting back and not playing during his contract year. We'll see how that works out for him financially when nobody has any game film of him for 2005 when trying to assess his market value in 2006. This has the added sweet side benefit of Rod reaping what he sowed when he dragged *ss last year. Those crappy performances are all other teams will have to review when judging his market value. :D :D Double smiley on that one!
If he realizes that's sitting for the year is a very distinct reality, perhaps he might be more apt to negotiate a long term deal as part of a trade. We could then net a 3rd or 4th rounder when another team's WRs goes down in camp and folks get desperate.
Cut him? That's insane. You'd be giving him exactly what he wants. I've been a Redskins fan long enough to know that he WILL end up in Philly and we WILL NOT get anything for him. I would rather sit him then to 1) Set a precedent that whiney, hack players can sniffle their way out of town, and 2) Give away something of value for nothing.

I like that! By George I like that!
So in essence, we impose economic sanctions on him for 2006!!! BNG that is sheer, unadulterated genius! I wonder if The Danny thought of that? Hey, there is one burning question in my mind though. When he is sitting back looking at the TV...do we have to feed him? Those hot dogs are very expensive at Fed-Ex and that might tilt the scales back in his favor as far as the economic part.
Just asking...

Sure you can feed him, but it's not recommended. I wouldn't want to be on the business end of Rod's underbite. :D

Morton has to go. And I agree w/ all that said keep Rod. Make him earn that next contract, if he plays poorly he will really be hurting himself. I think $$$ may be the only thing that can motivate Rod.
On a side note from that article. I love Santana Moss only getting a 3 mill bonus. The whole deal is so much less than I feared it would be.

i say cut Gardner, Barrow, Raymer, Friedman and Cartwright. That would free up a lot of cap space. Keep Morton because it costs more to cut him than to keep him and he's a pretty reliable return man, if not spectacular. Keep Sellers for special teams and as a blocking TE.
