what do u guys think about trying out our draft pick newberry at DE because of the situation of all the LB that we have?

Considering he might be too small for OLB in the NFL(6-2 230), moving him to DE would be a terrible idea. He would have to grow a couple inches and put on 50-70 pounds.

Newberry is probably going to end up being a career special teamer and maybe a strong safety, which is fine with me. That is why we drafted him.

his bios all say he's good in coverage, but then he ran only like a 4.75 40, so i was kinda curious about this pick. 6'-1 1/8 and 230 seems a little undersized not to have great speed. Lemar Marshall is undersized but extremely fast for a linebacker. Newberry excelled on special teams though, was a team leader and captain, national merit scholarship winner who walked on to the football program and played several positions before working his way into the starting lineup at linebacker, played both inside and outside linebacker. high motor, also played basketball, so he's probably a good athlete. sounds like a guy picked for character, motor and special teams...but probably not defensive end.

The guy that might make the cut and be helpful on the DL is Charles Howard. He's an UDFA out of FSU. Kinda short at 6'2, 260, but he had something like 5 sacks as a non-starter for FSU last year. Thats not bad for 11 games.

Newberry is the only player we drafted that I am not excited to see.

Actually I hear he's pretty fast. Did you see any of the vid on him after the draft?

I know edge rushers can come in small packages these days, but Newberry at 230 lbs as a DE will not only stretch the envelope, but will tear the envelope. I think Newberry's better shot is at MLB, in case Marshall does not pan out there as well as the Skins expect.

As for new blood at DE, Charles Howard from FSU is a possiblity as someone has already suggested. But, I think the player who may break out a little bit this year is Demetric Evans. I look for him to replace the aging and often nicked Philip Daniels.

Anybody have more info on Howard, including his 40 times?

Dwight Freeney is only 6'1 and 268. Hugh Douglas is 6'2 and 280. So defensive ends can be successful at 6'2 or less. Charles Howard could be that defensive end we are looking for but he will still need to add a little weight because 260 is just slightly too small to take on 300 pounders.

Time will tell.....as it will on all our off season moves.

Workout info on Howard from NFL.com:

Charles Howard DT - (6-2 5/8, 259) ran his 40s in 4.87 twice. Had a 34-inch vertical jump, 9-foot-2 long jump, 4.37 short shuttle, 7.25 three-cone drill and did 22 reps.

No, I didn't see the video? Or it is possible that I saw it and I've forgotten?

I shouldn't say I'm not excited, but there a ton of other LBs on the team and I am curious to see how it shakes out. We need Arrington and Washington completely healthy so that backup OLBs don't matter on anything except special teams.

Does anyone have any more information about this guy? If you go on Florida State's web site he is supposed to be one hell of a pass rusher. Hopefully he will be a dimond in the ruff that coach Gibbs spoke of .

he's one of those guys who battled some injuries and missed some playing time, got switched around from end to tackle, played in a rotation. i think Williams likes those guys who can play all across the line. that 40 time and those other measurables sound pretty good. i ran across this quote in one of his bios from 2003:
Played behind starter Darnell Dockett at defensive tackle...credited as being one of the most effective pass rushers on the defensive line by teammates and coaches...split time playing defensive end and defensive tackle in long yardage situa-tions

I dont know much about the DL, but folks keep saying that GW likes to rotate his DL players. Howard has played both Tackle and End, and has "come off the bench" so to speak. And he is an effective pass rusher, which many folks thought was a need in the draft. We'll see if he lasts, but i like what i've read.

Here's the thing that amazes me...look at those measurables...now consider Lavar Arrington is 6'-3, 253, and runs under 4.5 in the 40. not much difference in size, but big difference in speed. he had 11 sacks for Marvin Lewis. i'm pretty sure Greg Williams will be able to use him.

with all the LBs on the roster, i see newberry on the practice squad at best.

Don't forget about Chris Clemons as an edge rusher. He is roughly 6'3" and about 235 lbs. He showed some nice potential as a rush end in the last couple of games in 04. I look for him to get us about 8-10 sacks this year.

Lets hope the kid can improve on his 40 time and his quickness. They have speed camps and its also possible that his injuries or something else kept him from being in prime shape for those 40 times. If you are slow in the 40 then you aren't going to be a speed rusher...and if you aren't big..then thats all you have. He's going to need to improve to be effective in the NFL.

I haven't forgotten about him. I've been watching some Skins games on TIVO and he is really quick. He does have one weakness though, and that is the fact he can't seem to wrap up. He needs to be able to get to the quarterback and take him down...not just get past the tackle and lunge in the direction of the QB.

Clemons is not big enough to be a defensive end though. He is more suited to being an outside linebacker and thats where he is going to end up. The Skins will never be able to keep this guy once he ends up with 7-8 sacks this season. He would be a great linebacker for N.E. or Pittsburg in a 3-4 scheme.
