Congrats to Fentonator and Tommahawk for winning last year's history quiz. And this time, we'll have questions which just have weird history, politics, sports, and just anything I think will stump you. I award points based on the difficulty of the question and there are often follow up question worth points as well.
Here are the rules:
1-You must Private Message me your guess. No exceptions, if you post your guess here, you will be disqualified for that question.
2-You are allowed 3 guesses per question. Unless no one is getting it, and I post a hint for the question. Then you're allowed 3 more guesses.
3-If you have an idea for a question, Private message it to me. If I like it, and I can confirm the question, I will use it and give you credit for it. You are not eligible to answer that question, however.
4-No Whining.

First Question(for 50 points):
Out of the 263 men who have been Pope(officially recognized as Pope--not the Anti Popes, Fake Popes or Popes on a Rope), how many of them died Violent Deaths?
akhhorus
05-23-2005, 01:37 PM
50 points for Tbfoster:
33 Popes have died violent deaths.
And some good guesses by people so far.
Look for the next question late tonight.

For 75 points:

To clear things up, are we starting from the early British kingdoms, or around the 8th century AD (basically starting with Egbert)

English Kings.

05-23-2005, 10:11 PM
Swheeler won, and got the right King for #5.
1-George III
2-Henry III
3-Edward III
4-Henry VI(who was King twice)
5-Aethelred the Unready
While the official record has him tied with Henry VIII, his reign was very complicated and it is now believed that he took power from his brother before 978. His mother may ruled, but The Unready was the technical king. There is ALOT of pointless blather on this from the historians. So 75 points for you swheeler.
75 point follow up:
What the exact name for each dynasty that these five kings were in.
akhhorus
05-24-2005, 08:19 AM
75 points for Santheb:
George III--House of Brunswick
Henry III--Plantagenet,Angevin Line
Edward III--Plantagenet,Angevin Line
Henry VI--Plantagenet, Lancastrian Line
Aethelred the Unready--House of Wessex
Look for the next question around noon.

For 50 points(with maybe a follow up to it):
Which Stalin era Soviet leader/official/politician was secretly negotiating with NATO to dismantle the Warsaw Pact and end the Cold War as early as 1950?
akhhorus
05-24-2005, 12:21 PM
And BurgundyNGold got it with his final guess:
Beria, Stalin spy chief, started negotiating with NATO to end the Cold War. He was expecting to take power after Stalin died, and he realized that fighting the West was pointless. When Stalin died, he was arrested and executed before he could take power.
And people...all of you: Molotov didn't have the guts to try something like that.
50 points for you.
Next question coming tonight.

(With two follow ups)
akhhorus
05-25-2005, 09:41 AM
Tbfoster got it:
The Marquis of Lafayette
75 points for you
First follow up(50 points):
What did he exactly get?
akhhorus
05-25-2005, 09:47 AM
Tbfoster got it:
he got 200,000 dollars and a township of land anywhere in the unsold public domain, he accepted a township adjacent to Tallahassee in the Territory of Florida
50 more points.
2nd follow up:
Who ended up with it? And why would he get it?
akhhorus
05-25-2005, 12:11 PM
Since no one got the follow up question, here's the answer:
Lafayette spend most of the French Revolution(he was there in the beginning) in jail in west Prussia. Marshall Murat and his troops got him out of jail and personally took him back to France. As a gift, Murat's son got the land that became Talahassee.
Next question coming soon.

Your afternoon question for 100 points:
Its late 1813, and Napoleon has lost the Battle of the Nations and has fled back into France with the wrecked husk of the Grande Armee. The Coalition will not recognize his son as the King of France, so Napoleon flees to the west coast to buy himself time. His brother, Joseph, shows up and tells him of a deal he has made for Napoleon. What was that deal and who was it with?

No hint until tomorrow morning, but a couple of you are close. We had one last time we did this that took over a week--with plenty of clues and a ton of guesses-great one. I might have to bring it back, but disqualify anyone who guessed on it last time.
akhhorus
05-26-2005, 10:00 AM
Second hint:
The deal was with a nation that was neutral in the Napoleonic wars.
akhhorus
05-26-2005, 11:27 AM
BurgundyNGold got it:
Joseph Bonaparte worked out a deal with the United States so that Napoleon could avoid the allies altogether(no way they try and invade the US to get Napoleon), in exchange Napoleon would have to create a national US army along his lines with an officer corps that would be good enough to take over when he died/retired. Napoleon rejected it because it would have ended any hopes of Napoleon taking back control of France.
100 points for you.

BurgundyNGold got it:
Czechoslovakia was paying off these people hoping to bring Churchill into power. They knew that the German were bluffing--they didn't have the army then to take on Britain, France and Czechoslovakia. But Britain stabbed them in the back and Czechoslovakia was carved up by Nazi Germany.

In order, what were the first Seven countries to diplomatically recognize the United States?
akhhorus
06-01-2005, 08:21 PM
First Hint:
The first country that recognized the US should be obvious. And only one of the countries no longer existed(they all have changed governments and borders, but only one is no longer on the map).

[QUOTE=akhhorus]Ok, your 100 point question for Monday:
Which battle was so deadly that the US Army losing 350 troops per minute
EDIT I accidently posted
akhhorus
06-06-2005, 10:47 PM
First hint:
It was on US soil.
akhhorus
06-07-2005, 08:34 AM
Second hint:
This wasn't a major battle or a particularly long one. Gettysburg, Anthietam were multi-day battles. This was a relatively short battle.
akhhorus
06-07-2005, 11:53 AM
Minor correction: I have seen a new death total, and it would work out to 500 US troops killed a minute. But this shouldn't change the criterium you are looking for.
Another Hint:
The Battle happened in the state of Virginia.
akhhorus
06-07-2005, 03:15 PM
Tbfoster got it:
The Battle of Cold Harbor.
There are two reports on how many US/Union troops were killed in this short but brutal battle. One has it at 7000 dead in 20 minutes, another had it 10000 dead in 20 minutes. It was a terrible battle that did nothing to change the outcome. And the night before the battle, the Union troops knew how bad it was going to be--the lead brigades had their troops pin pieces of paper with their names and hometowns on their backs.
100 points for you Tb.
Follow up(75 points):
What did Grant say later in his life about the Battle of Cold Harbor?
akhhorus
06-07-2005, 03:27 PM

First hint:
It is very doubtful that the US is using this piece of equipment in Iraq.
akhhorus
06-09-2005, 08:01 AM
2nd hint:
This piece of equipment was not used in any battles as a weapon.

100 points for you.
75 point follow up:
Why exactly did he get both. And you'd better be detailed in this answer.
akhhorus
06-09-2005, 01:34 PM
CNYSkinFan got the follow up:
Chapman was a thief who was in jail in Jersey when the Germans invaded. He talked his way into working for the German Military Intelligence(Abewehr) and was trained as a Saboteur. As soon as he was dropped into England, he went to MI-6 and got them to only blow up a part of a Aircraft factory that he was assigned to blow up. Enough that the Germans bought it. When he returned, he recieved the Iron Cross for his work. After the war, he was decorated by the British and publically shown as actually as the spy who was working for MI-6 so he would avoid any trouble/prosecution.

akhhorus
06-10-2005, 10:57 AM

first follow up:
Who was the last famous prisoner of the Tower?

first hint:
It was not Rudolph Hoess.
And this question is worth 150 points.
akhhorus
06-10-2005, 02:31 PM
BurgundyNGold got it:
The Kray Brothers in the 1960s were the last famous prisoners in the Tower of London.
Second follow up:
Who was the first member of the Royalty that was killed in the Tower of London?
akhhorus
06-10-2005, 03:01 PM
first hint(for clarification's sake): Henry VI was no longer King when he died in the Tower. Nor did he have any Royal titles/lands. Edward (V or VI) was declared King after Henry VI was overthrown the first time, Henry VI wasn't re-declared King officially and Henry VI's own son could have been considered the King over his father during his 1-2 years before the Battle of Tewesbury.
akhhorus
06-10-2005, 03:11 PM
tbfoster got it:
King Edward V(son ofEdward IV) was executed by the attainder not by Richard III but by Henry VII. Who couldn't become the official King until Edward V died. Technically, Richard III was co-King with Edward V and when he died on Bosworth Field, Edward V became King. Despite Shakespeare's slander, the King and his brother(who was the Prince of Wales) were executed by Henry VII(there are journals from guards and officials who speak of seeing the brothers after Richard III was killed).

King Guy lost Hattin and Saladin strolled into Jerusalem in 1187. The second time in the 13th century, Frederick II got Jerusalem by a deal with the Muslims(who were willing to give the Christians Jerusalem just to have some peace for the MIddle East), but for two things: 1- he was excommunicated by the Pope for the deal and that meant Jerusalem was in interdict while he was in it and 2- the Pope threatened to invade Sicily if he didn't give it back and invade it properly. Frederick gave it back to the Caliph if his Daughter and Grandson would be the ruler of the city under the protection of the Caliph, and didn't invade. He was still excommunicated and the Pope still invaded Sicily. Frederick II's daughter still sort of ran Jerusalem after this in a power sharing deal, but the Caliph officially took control in the early 14th century.

When Russia overthrew the Tsar and was being run by Kerensky and the PG in early 1917, they were preparing to withdraw from WWI. The British and the French made all sorts of promises to Russia if they would stay in the war. The most outlandish one was that they promised Russia Constantinople from the Turks if they stayed. The Russians agreed and stayed in the war. Which brought the downfall of the PG and the rise of the USSR. After the war, both sides of the Russian civil war tried to ask for the things that were promised to them by the British and the French. They were both rejected.

In the Scopes Monkey trial, which one of the famous lawyers on either side of that trial gave the more eloquent, and longer closing argument?
bwparker got it. Neither gave a closing argument. Darrow knew Bryan had a long speech worked out that would make it tough to appeal so he invoked a little known aspect of Tennessee law which was that if one side didn't give a closing argument, then the other side couldn't.
