Steve Jackson, the Redskins' safeties coach, says Ryan Clark's game is based first and foremost on one thing. "Intestinal fortitude, that's what Ryan brings, more than anything else," Jackson says.
In 2004, a number of players stepped up and played better than expected for the Redskins. You could put the likes of Lemar Marshall, Chris Cooley, Antonio Pierce and Demetric Evans in that category.

Yet, in terms of pleasant surprises, Clark, the 5-11, 200-pound safety out of LSU, was the biggest of them all. He finished the season with 91 tackles, fourth best on the team and tops among Redskin defensive backs.

I hope this guy stays around. He is getting praise and he played pretty well when Bowen and Lott both went down.

In a fictional note, I started a new Madden Franchise and Ryan Clark has pulled the starting job away from Matt Bowen by week 5.

I really like Clark and i prefered if he started he may be small but he plays with heart and no fear. I just realized we have to have one of the best if not the best safety lineup in the NFL

Whoa there partner. I like our safeties a lot too but I think Philly might have some say in that department with Dawkins and the very underrated Michael Lewis.

I like Clark too but mostly in coverage. I prefer Bowen as a blitzer, similar to how we used Alvin Walton.

That Pats core is pretty good too

Michael Lewis went to the Pro-Bowl last year :/ Don't think he's underrated anymore.

Clark will make a superb backup behind Bowen and Taylor/Lott.

Am sorry but dawkins is getting old and he is going to start losing his flair he is still an elite, but i would be surprised if Sean (being out of trouble and able to play) had a better season. Micheal Lewis is a good safety though I can't lie he is an up an comer, but they have no depth all of our safeties can be starters and of them did. Now the Pats: Rodney Harrison is great DONE but Eugene Wilson still plays more like a cornerback than a Safety and that is his position but again we still have more depth. I like our 4 safeties better than theirs.

ST had a better season than Dawkins last year as well.

He sure will, and I bet he'll get significant playing time somewhere in the backfield for us. He's got a great will to play the game.

I love Ryan Clark, this guy really does just have guts. I think he'll be third on the depth chart but see a lot of action this year. Gregg Williams really knows how to rotate his players to get the most out of them in the right situations.

Of course he was playing with a sense of urgency. He was urgently trying to hold his job.

Bowen was great in week one blitzing, but I just can't shake those images of him getting burned in coverage up in NY during week two.

That's true and according to the Post he was cut before the season began. Its funny how things turn out isn't it?

Clark has speed. he's the fasted DB on the roster behind Bowen, who might not be as fast now after surgery, so Clark might be the fasted option at DB. A year in the system whould help even more.
