I don't know about you guys, but I didn't get one red cent from this deal where they renamed our stadium so why should I continue to advertise for that company by pointlessly using their name? I say we call it "the jack" or Jack Kent Cooke stadium. Don't tell me to relax mo fo! It's to honor the man who actually built the stadium and vowed that he would not use the jumbo trons for stinking commercials. The same man who had the sense to hire Joe Gibbs when nobody knew who he was.

Too much effort for something I don't care about either way. Its like how its not BC and AD anymore, but BCE and CE. Sure that sounds good in theory, but its too much effor to change something that doesn't really matter to me.
If it helps, I'll call it "the Jack" whenever I talk to you though :D I just don't want to have to go through this:
"The Jack"
"The What?"
"The Jack, its where the Redskin's play"
"Isn't that Fed Ex?"
"Yeah, technically, but I call it the Jack"
"Why?"
"Because..blah blah blah blah"
"Oh...whatever...you were saying what about Fed Ex?"
And the conversation continues. Its just not worth it for me.

I agree in principal, but I think stadium naming rights provide valuable revenue to sign players... I'm not as opposed to FedEx as I was when the rights were first sold.
Can we get back to bashing the no spine fans? :)

This is true, BW. If we're too lazy to change to the metric system, I'm sure that we're too lazy to begin "The Jack" groundswell.

Didn't FedX pay 250 million to name the stadium. That's a lot of money to help sign players and improve the stadium with. I have never had the honor of visiting the stadium, but one day I will make a trip across country for a game. When I do, I will behold the stadium for what it is, the home of our beloved Redskins, and not for what it's named.

The home to our beloved Redskins? Really? Because if you look closely at the stadium, it doesn't say the word "Redskins" anywhere. Just green and purple fedexfedexfedexfedexfedexgfedexfedexfedexfedexfede xfedexfedexcgfedexfedexfedex etc. -all the way around. The seats are Burgundy and gold, that's about it.

Much of the team's "long and storied history" of late has been at RFK. Give it a while and Fedex might grow on you once we start winning.

I always liked "the Cooker" myself. It's true the colors and the gratuitous use of "FedEx" and other eyesore advertisements (like that wretched Lavar Arrington Under Armour Ad that takes up an entire side of the stadium) are overtop and do not reinforce the theme or idea of the Washington Redskins in the least. Unfortunately, it's a byproduct of commercialism. However, it can be mitigated. For those who are interested in seeing what I mean, pop up the "I" to Baltimore for the scrimmage. They seem to be able to handle commercial advertising and yet the various themes of the "Raven" are extremely visible and permeates the entire experience at their stadium. I think this would make for a great thread after that event...though I suspect they won't have the full regalia rolled out for a scrimmage. You should see it on a game day....the "Ravens Walk", etc....there's a lot of things we could be doing a LOT better at FedEx, regardless of the presentation of sponsors and the like.

I went to a Ravens game a few years ago, nice stadium except for the purple seats. The funniest thing is the stadium announcer reading the "rules" to the Baltimorons before the game like a bunch of children. My favorite rule..."Don't be a jerk." lol.

The name on the outside of the stadium is really inconsequential... it's what happens INSIDE the stadium that counts. And if people will get off their arses and make some noise during the games, then it will soon be called, by opposing teams, either one of the following:
1. RFK Part 2
2. Hell
Either is fine with me.

If it makes a profit for the team, then Im all for it. What Im not for is the arbitrary renaming of that section of Landover to "Raljohn". I admired the Squire as much as anyone, and I appreciate and respect that he built the stadium with his own money, but the stadium he built was rushed and crappy. Dan Snyder has put millions into enhancing the experience for fans, including giving the place a facelift. If the price of that is calling the place "Fed-Ex", then oh well......a Small price to pay In my opinion.

The season openers against the Jets and Bucs were very loud-just as loud as the one playoff game in Cooker history against the Lions I think. Also, the Green Bay game last year was very loud until that freaking false start penalty on Thrash when Portis scored that td. Also, the Eagles game where Betts almost ran that TD back was pretty loud.
Maybe it's because you were in the upper bowl and everyone's voices are pointed away from you. I'm always in the club level except the Eagles game where I was in the lower bowl. Lower Bowl people are my kind of people! In the club level I'm probably considered a freak.

I went the Dallas, Green Bay, and Minnesota games last year and my seats are in the lower section behind the end zone and I always thought it was very loud, even during the Vikings game when the outcome was essentially meaningless.
I thought the place was going absolutely nuts during the Dallas game, I imagine it seems louder down at the bottom though.

"If a company is looking for brand awareness, they would never buy a deal like this," said Mike Reisman, a principal of Velocity Sports and Entertainment, which brokered the two largest naming rights deals in pro sports -- the expansion Houston Texans and the Washington Redskins. "Companies don't want anything to do with old names."
The naming rights for Reliant Stadium in Houston sold for a reported $300 million; Fed Ex Field in Maryland went for a reported $205 million.
it is Fed Ex Field, and it's worth 205 Mil to call it that, at 7.59M per yr for 27 years.

The real reason these field are not named for a corporation is that these are all(?) owned by a government entity that has no incentive or even interest in making as much revenue as they can to sink back into the stadium. They just raise taxes on taxpayers to pay the bill.
FedEx field is privately owned by an owner who has consistently shown the willingness to reinvest in the stadium and team he owns. The Danny spends money on us fans like no owner in the league....maybe someday he will figure out how to spend that money well.....but you can't accuse him of NOT reinvesting substantial amounts of revenue back into the team and the stadium that benefits all Redskins fans....as well as himself of course.

yes, you make a good point. i didnt think about the stadiums that are owned by gov't. entities and paid for with taxes.
i remember reading an article where Dan renovated some accomodations for Gibbs, something about installing new shower and bathroom facilities, which sounded almost like personal living quarters for Coach Gibbs because of his renowned work ethic. That probably cost a bundle, in addition to making Gibbs the highest paid coach in history.

Corporate interests have been buying up names at a rapid pace, but 17 teams will play the 2001 season in stadiums that don't have corporate names on the building: Giants Stadium (Giants/Jets), Sun Devil Stadium (Cardinals), Georgia Dome (Falcons), Ralph Wilson Stadium (Bills), Soldier Field (Bears), Cleveland Browns Stadium (Browns), Paul Brown Stadium (Bengals), Texas Stadium (Cowboys), Lambeau Field (Packers), Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome (Vikings), Louisiana Superdome (Saints), Veterans Stadium (Eagles), Foxboro Stadium (Patriots), Arrowhead Stadium (Chiefs), Pontiac Silverdome (Lions) and Husky Stadium (Seahawks, temporarily).
How is it the PONTIAC silverdome made the list of stadiums that had not sold out?

I think Pontiac was the name of the city that the stadium was in.
They play at Ford Field now ;).

I think we should do a deal with DHL, get even more money from the stadium name and at least have the colors on the stadium. I agree with an earlier post the, Fed Ex colors are way to dominant. If it were DHL the colors would be close. :typeR2:

Fred Smith isn't the CEO of DHL.

Fred Smith isn't the CEO of DHL.This bears repeating.
BTW, it's a great idea to shun the American company because it's colors are dominant in favor of the the company that is run and owned by the German Postal service all in the name of color coordination. Simply marvelous....

kenny wouldn't have a vested interest in this at all, though...he's just an innocent bystander :) i saw a caravan of FedEx trucks over on the hill before i got sick, 4 or 5 of them...went to see if it was you, alas it was not...oh well.

I ran into the Rayburn last week to pick up one very important package, and I was out of there in less then 5 minutes. Before that, I hadn't been down there in a few months.

If Fedex is to get a knickname let it come naturally. Either a coach, player, sportswriter or announcer will call it something and the knickname will stick.
Trying to call it "the jack" sounds too much like some ultra-hip, lame-a@# ESPN announcer trying too hard. Just like a Washington Post Metro section columnist referred to RFK Stadium as "the Bobby". The Bobby!?! Ugh. I've lived here for 35 years and never heard that one.

How about we call it The Fed.

That's kind of a compromise. Not bad.
