The Defensive End selection wnet to Dexter Manley in a very, very tight race between Manley and Mann. Manley received 50% of the votes, while Mann was right behind at 45%. Manley was the winner in 2004 Best Ever with nearly the exact vote, 52% in 2004. Congrats to Dexter.
On to Defensive Tackle.

If this is for Best Rapping Defensive Tackle then you have to go with Daryl Grant. If this is for best football-playing Defensive Tackle then you have to go with Dave Butz.

This one ought to be quick, the man with the battle scarred helmet, Dave Butz.

Grant will always stick out for the INT return against the Cowpukes in the NFC Championship...but overall, I have to go with Dave Butz. Just the memory of Butz swinging his cast around and clocking opposing linemen brings a smile to my face.

Dave Butz (playing alongside Diron Talbert).

I agree its Butz...no competition.
Question: How long, assuming he stays on the team, until Griffin can be involved in the discussion?

I agree its Butz...no competition.I agree with the first part of this, but not the second. It is not a runaway, or at least it shouldn't be. Diron Talbert was every bit as good as Butz and anchored the line throughout the 70's. If anything, the vote should be neck and neck.
Funny thing is, during the 70's the Butz trade was initially considered a huge bust (as was the Riggins signing).

I agree with this. I was tempted to vote for Talbert because I knew he wouldn't be shown the proper respect, but I feel Butz to have been the superior performer between the 2. Hopefully there will be a DT #2 poll.....

Agreed. I voted for Butz too. But Talbert gets my next vote.
In addition to being one of the 70 best (he and Butz are the only DTs), I think Talbert has another distinction in Redskin history: He is one of three people, IMO, who was personally responsible for making the Dallas rivalry what it is today (or even better, what it used to be). Those three are George Allen, Talbert, and then later Dexter.
Remember Talbert vs. Staubach during Dallas Week?
And, you're right, he doesn't get the proper respect: Its Talbert, not Tolbert!

I am in agreement with the consensus here, I like Butz at #1 and Talbert at 1a. Diron hated Dallas with the (Danny) white hot passion of a thoudand suns. For that if nothing else, he is worthy of respect.
Butz was a techniqueless manchild his first two seasons in DC. After some off-season coaching, including looking at Lombardi coaching films of Vince breaking down the whys and wherefores of defensive responsibilities, his role "clicked" for him and he was a problem forever after. No center or gurad wanted to play the Redskins, staring across at the big man with the ugly helmet. He was a force for a long, long time. Some of his plays will live forever in my memory. When big Dave sacked you, you stayed sacked.

I hope so too, because a lot of those who voted for Butz (like me) will vote for Talbert as the other DT. Otherwise, Grant will get in with only one vote.
That's how Brad Edwards got to be BEST EVER last year, placing a huge distant second to Houston. Brad Edwards? Can you believe that?

Brad Edwards beat Kenny Houston? no wonder you guys were p.o.'d about the polls. i used to love that guy, and joe lavender too. i'm hesitant to vote now because i'm only 41 but i can talk to my dad, he's 74. i think he has an autographed photo of Diron Talbert. I always liked Dave Butz, and i thought it was cool when Darryl Grant broke the window of the bus pulling in with the scabs during the strike season. i bet those guys were terrified.

Brad Edwards beat Kenny Houston? No. I think he was a very distant second. Most people voted for Kenny. A couple of (uninformed, I believe) people voted for Edwards (I guess they didn't see Houston play). Edwards got second place and hence a spot on the best ever as a safety, even though there were several others on the list that (informed) people would have voted for before Edwards, if Houston was off the boards.
I think that is what occurred. That is why this year they are having second votes for postions with two spots, like guard and tackle.

Dave Butz. He was big and lunky and couldn't move too fast, but he really plugged up the middle. Occasionally, he's blow up the middle and get a sack too. He was like Frankenstein's monster on the field. Give him a couple of bolts in the neck, and he was the spitting image.

Dave Butz was so solid in the middle, an engulfing tackler. He played nine years before Sacks became a recorded stat so the 35 on record from 82-88 were probably between 60-70 over his career, that is not too shabby for a DL. His one Pro Bowl is scant reward for the performance he put in through his 216 game career.

He is 3rd all time, for the Skins, in sacks with 59.5.

Big Dave without a doubt - love looking at his helmet every week to see how beat up it was. Never let the equipment guys clear or paint it.
