I know that it's just preseason, but I am having football withdrawls. It really is sad! I was watching the Chicago/Miami game on monday & I found myself glued to the TV, as if it were a Skins game. I even got excited when the bears intercepted the ball in the endzone at the end of the game. Then I realized that I was going through my transformation from hibernation to football season, so watching anyone would have gotten me excited (well maybe not anyone......No way in hell would I have cheered or even got excited about a Dallass game)! But it was nice to see what the bears looked like, considering that we are going to open the season against them. So I treated it as if I were a coach sitting in the film room watching our opponent, that way I could justify it.
Anyway, I was starting this thread to see what other peoples opinions would be on the upcoming game with the Panthers. I have a few questions that I would like to know your answers to:
1. I know that this is a preseason game, but what are your expectations for this game?
2. Let's just say that our offense looks awful or not that good, do we start to worry? If not, then when should we?
3. What do think the game plan will be? Will we show some flashes of greatness to let the league know that were for real, or will we be very plain & have all the fans wondering what the hell is up? Not to mention the jump ship now & Gibbs needs to go back to racing articles we will have to face from the media!
4. Are you going to be watching any particular players in this upcoming game? Who do think we need to concentrate on the most?
5. How long do you feel the starters should play in this game and the remaining preseason games?
6. Does anyone know if this game will be on TV, or will we be in the dark on this one?
Please everyone let me know what you think about this. I am up in the air about how much weight these preseason games have, but we have so many questions that need to be answered. Well maybe not questions, but definitely some things that need to be cleared up. I just need to have that warm & fuzzy feeling going into the regular season, not thoughts of us having another bad year. You know what I mean?

1. Expectations? Win and stay healthy.
2. Worrying is an emotion for the weak and never helps the problem. Concern to a degree is fine, but I prefer to focus on a resultion than to "worry".
3. Limited and very conservative.
4. All Redskins and Panthers as I think the Panthers could be a playoff caliber team. I will put particular emphasis on offense and Sean Taylor.
5. I like a breakout as follows:
Game 1 - Quarter or so
Game 2 - Quater plus to a half or so
Game 3 - Half to 3 quarters or so
Game 4 - Quarter or so
6. I'd guess in the dark, but I don't know.

I just want to see improvement from the offense and no injuries mainly. I know our offense isn't going to look like the Colts or anything, but improving is an imperative step for our team. The defense will be vicious once again. I would love to see this on tv, if anyone knows whether it's on or not.

I'd like to see us expose a little bit of the vertical game, but I know that we're going to stay vanilla, and keep all that close to our chest. While I understand that philosophy, I still think, because it's all so new for the team, that we need to work on the vertical game in real-game situations.
But, since that won't happen, I'm just wishing for no injuries. Even if we get spanked by the Panthers, I'd prefer no injuries.

I expect us to lose. Home teams usually put more emphasis on winning these meaningless games since the fans had to pay for the tickets.

Did a little digging! It appears that NFL Network will be showing the game on monday. Here is the link.

1. I know that this is a preseason game, but what are your expectations for this game? Number one expectation is to remain healthy. After that I expect to see some improvement over last year's woes. (Better O-line play...QBs throwing to 2nd and 3rd receivers...better running lanes...NO DROPPED BALLS...crisp route running...and great A+ defense.)
2. Let's just say that our offense looks awful or not that good, do we start to worry? If not, then when should we? I won't worry about our offense until the 3rd game of the preseason. Until then, I guess we should expect a bit of sloppiness...
3. What do think the game plan will be? Very conservative. Gibbs didn't air it out during the Ravens scrimmage and I doubt he will air it out the entire preseason. Expect very vanilla play calls. I do, however, expect to see the official introduction of the shotgun.
4. Are you going to be watching any particular players in this upcoming game? Who do think we need to concentrate on the most? I'm personally going to have my eyes on Campbell. He is the most intriguing to me. I can't wait to see how his size and power sets him apart from Brunell and Ramsey.
5. How long do you feel the starters should play in this game and the remaining preseason games? Starters will get one quarter. Brunell will probably get the 2nd quarter, with Campbell getting most of the 2nd half.
6. Does anyone know if this game will be on TV, or will we be in the dark on this one? CBS 9 (DC Affiliate) will air the game at 8pm on Saturday. LIVE...

6. I believe Comcast is broadcasting the game for the Washington/South viewing area, and the Ravens game for the Baltimore/North viewing area. That's how they've been advertising, anyways.

FYI - For anyone in the Los Angeles area, Channel 5 will be carrying the game LIVE on Saturday at 5pm PDT.
Ch. 5 carried a couple games live last year (don't ask me why - maybe they feel there's a big enough Redskins fanbase in Southern California?), and they actually carry the Redskins TV feed, so you get the "homers" broadcasting the game.

1. I know that this is a preseason game, but what are your expectations for this game? My HOPE is that I'll see improved OLine play from our starters. Carolina's defensive front is pretty good and will be a good barometer for where we're at on the oLine.
I EXPECT much improved play from our WR, better routes, less drops and more separation.
2. Let's just say that our offense looks awful or not that good, do we start to worry? If not, then when should we? If Portis/Betts aren't averaging at least 3.6 YPC after the 1st qtr. I'll unjustly start worrying a little. But that's just me.
3. What do think the game plan will be? I expect basic formations, very little motion and more passing than running. Especially with the starters out there. May get a big does of Cartwright and Broughton later in the game.
4. Are you going to be watching any particular players in this upcoming game? Who do think we need to concentrate on the most? I'll be looking at TE [Royal/Sellers] to see who can block for the backs. I wanna see how Jansen is moving and is he getting the push off the line of old. I'm also excited to see Broughton and White in live action. I would love to see us in a goal line situation to see how our short yardage game is looking.
5. How long do you feel the starters should play in this game and the remaining preseason games? Ditto what DJS said.

Unlike last year's inaugural game for Joe Gibbs, which was this same team (Panthers) where he kinda' put a little umph in it, this one will be toned down greatly. A quarter for the starters or those currently ahead on the depth chart, healthy, and then a slow matriculation of players destined to be mainly depth players or get business cards.
That means Brunell, Campbell and Skinner will get the most snaps, Broughton, Smith, DMac, McCune, Bowen, Barber, Palmer, Wilson and others will get some additional playing time for about 2 quarters.
I would like to see improvement from the scrimmage, on offense, mainly the offensive line. I still think THIS game will be a bit more hectic than the scrimmage so I am leaving a little room for error, as this is closer than a scrimmage to how they all work together against a team "designed" to stop them.
Scrimmages are like one on ones, who's rustier than the next guy. Preseason games are like, who's coaching and planning is rustier than the next guys, because players are constantly changing back and forth, getting in the game just long enough to see how they do in given situations vs why they think he "may" fit or not.
Seeing how the Panthers are a bit anxious to get to that groove that took them to the SB 3 season's ago, with more developments added, I look for them to leave their offense in a bit longer against a great defensive mind like Gregg Williams. Fox knows full well Gibbs won't even put a smiggen' of his real offense out there, compared to Williams natural knacks, so he'll just get feelers on his players abilities from his defense. Either way everyone that faces both Gibbs and Williams comes away far more knowledgeable.

Remember...whenever we've done well during the season, we've been horrible during pre-season.
I want us to stay healthy and see some protection from OL. Some nice holes opened by our OL. And our defense kick tail reguardless of who's in the game.

Yea, but when we were doing bad in the pre-season we were coming off some pretty good years with a core group of vets well entrenched in the system. I think it's important that this group demonstrates some signs of improvement. If for nothing else than to develop some confidence in themselves. Especially, in our passing game.

I'll answer the starter question.... IMHO the starters shouuld get about a full quarter and then let the coaching staff call it.
3 or 4 downs is not enough. . . I, like everybody else here, worry about injuries, but the coaches need to see who has stepped up and who needs more work or who needs to drop to the 2nd team....
. . . just my 2 cents

I don't care about the stats either, but we definitely need to get our gel on during the preseason. This team needs to be on a roll when the season starts, so they can just carry right over into regular season. Just IMO!

True, but even if it looks like they have the gel on in the pre-season doesn't mean it will translate to wins in the regular season. But the more work they get together the better.

i think our offense will look atrocious and "worry" alot of us. however, i have no doubt we will win this preseason game. why?
OUR DEFENSE. As far as the panthers are concerned, their starting offense, 2nd string offense, and 3rd string offense will all be facing a starting NFL defense. Thats the brilliance of greg williams. Our defense will not allow the panthers to do much of anything. And it will only get worse for them as the game goes on. Now, i'm not expecting to see anything "new" from greg williams. he will use the same schemes he did last year, but theres no reason not to use them because opposing teams already know whats coming and they know they can't do anything about it. Our defense will score 2 touchdowns saturday. and no matter how horrible our offense is, they should atleast score 3 field goals. Thats 23 points, my friends, and I would be surprised if the panthers break 10.

Two reasons:
1. He will probably not be on the active roster at any time during the season.
2. We don't want anybody else to see his talents and snatch him off our practice squad.

Maybe Sean Taylor can get his hands on him. Make him look like Pinkston or one of his other casualties during last season. That would be great!

First preseason game ....... I watch the position battles:
> #3 receiver
> punters
> DE
> MLB
> CB
> #2 RB
Special team play is also interesting - this is were the young ones are trying to really make the team.
And most important ............ NO INJURIES!!!!!

TO be Quite honest ill be so happy if we throw nothing but bombs all game. I think it would be dumb to hold our "Cards to our Chest". We need to send notice that we are faster and our recievers are legit. If we cant show people a relatively effective passing game in the Preseason then how will we get people out of the box come the season. So IMO i dont care if we throw 3 picks just as long as they are all on bombs. That way people will at least think we have the desire to go deep. Work the Kinks out now when the Score dosent matter but statements do. MAKE A STATEMENT SKINS.

What I look for in this preseason game is not a lot of playing time for the starters so they stay healthy and I like it that way. I think Campbell might get some good playing time to see what he can do. As Patrick said before, we're going to see the battle for #3 WR and all the others on his list. I'm not really concerned on the score of the game. As for it airing, I know that it will be on Channel 10 (Wavy) for the people in Hampton Roads or who get Wavy.

I'll bet you an ice cold beer that he see's no action in the preseason, barring an injury to one of our other QB's.

For all of us on the edge of our seats, trying to find some good evidence of Ramsey performing, let me offer this out (2004 stats)...
QB rating as a sub - 43.9 rating with 2 TDs and 5 INTs (2 games)
QB rating as a starter - 82.6 rating with 8 TDs and 6 INTs (7 games)
I think it shows if he's starter and practicing with those starters, he can be a decent Qb. One thing that did not look promising though is he gets sack relatively the same amount of times in both situations (per game). Just thought this might be interesting...

Is there any chance Tupa is NOT our punter this season. I thought he did a fantastic job last season. The ratio of punts downed inside the opponents 20 vs. touchbacks was unbelievable. If it's not the NFL record it must be pretty close.
