Madden '06: The hR Games

Alrighty, the new Madden is out and everyone's trying to get a handle on it. With so much interest, what better time to have a few games amongst hRers? I'll be online for a couple hours later tonight, and I know plenty of our members play online as well. That means that bragging rights are at stake.

If there's a good amount of interest generated, we might even be able to have a mini-tourney. For now, though, let's just get some screennames and the system you use, and see how many members play.

I usually always get madden on ps2 but this year I had my good friend specifically request that I get it on xbox so that I could play him while he's at home.

hey iceman what playbook do you use. I tried using washington's pb but it's a dud with no shotgun or good running plays. I remember last year the texans' playbook was awesome. Anyway it'd be great if you could help me out with that.

And here's something nice I discovered for the depth chart for anybody who doesn't already have there own preferences set in stone:

Put Cooley as the #1 fullback and the #2 tight end. That puts him in nearly every formation and you definitely want him in there every opportunity you get. He's a beast in this game and one of the few 'Skins who can really lay out a truck stick with consistency.

And for those keeping score (namely myself) I am now "Level 7" and 16-2 overall online. As if you didn't know, our boys have a sick defense and nobody has scored a touchdown on me in the last 4 games. But I'm just bragging now. Heheh.

My problem with it, is there should be an easy way to check down then holding r2 and selecting the recievers....or using the analog stick...i find myself taking...alot of Sacks.

And it takes a long time to get used to the new passing game but if you take your lumps you will learn it. I actually like this game better than my favorite 2k5 right now. It is a really good game.

I'm getting used to the new passing now, and I gotta say, from a defensive point of view, I love it. You can't just run some damn 5-WR play over and over again anymore. It forces people to play smart and even run the ball, which I'm a fan of.

Speaking of running the ball, I absolutely love the Falcons, and not for Vick - for Warrick Dunn, who's the fastest, shiftiest little guy in the game. God, it's fun to giving him the ball.

I've been playing Madden 06 for almost 2 weeks and I have to say that I didn't like the new passing scheme at first. Previous Madden games had an option for playing a season. I can't find it in 06...only Franchise mode as far as I can tell. Anybody else find it or is it just not available?

Franchise is season, but if you meen one without ownership and stuff, then yea I dont think there is one...

Cooley is by far my leading reciever after 13 franchise games. He has 1100 yards and 10 TDs, he catches anything thats near him even if he is double covered, Portis is super fast if he gets around the corner its over!

ahh man, it's literally one of the best games I've ever played online if you have a friend to play it with. Having someone who will talk to you and cooperate are key and it is a blast to play if you know what's going on. I'd be more than happy to tutor you up anytime. I can't believe you've got the game and have never taken it online! It's a great concept for a multiplayer game. It's 2v2 with spies versus mercs. The spies are 3rd person with passive weapons. They can only kill by sneaking up and breaking necks... or dropping lots of smoke and flash grenades, confusing the merc and then breaking necks. The mercs are first person like halo and they've got the firepower... grenades, proxy mines, laser mines, poison mines etc. The spies have to complete objectives, the mercs have to stop them. At the end, you switch sides. Great game.

ah, i finally just got an online connector for the ps2 however, my system seems to be having problems right now in that it keeps freezing on me and i keep getting losses for it. so right now i have like a 4-11 record with something like a 60% DNF. ugh. the sad thing is, in the games ive actually played im 4-1 with 0% DNF. not cool. im getting the ps2 fixed tomarrow though so i should be good to go.

Also a roster a update come out yesterday. The Skins got alittle respect with the update:

Moss is now a 91
Cooley is now a 90 which is a huge jump from 84 or 82 he was before
Patten and Tupa are back.

But the down fall is all the other IR players are back. So the Eagles now have that idiot TO and mcnabb playing again. O well I enjoy smacking around TO with ST.

I have Madden 06 on Gamecube. I am in my fouth season of the franchise. I have a question about passing.
I play on the "All-Madden" setting and I have the most difficult time accumulating passing yards. I am ok at the game. I went to the NFC Championship two straight years and won the superbowl last year. I set all kinds of records with Portis and the running game. He has been MVP each season. Passing however is a different story. I throw tons of interceptions. I never throw for 300 yards and I rarely throw for 200. It is a rare case to not throw an INT in a game and I always end up with more INT's than TD's passing for the season. I usually just throw underneath passes and use play action, but my recievers never get open deep.
I turned off the QB vision option because that was throwing me off. I was able to pass better an easier setting, but on All-Madden I am stumped. Any suggestions?

Jskins: It is difficult to pass in 06. The redskins offensive playbook is especially bad for passing. I might try the Pass Balanced playbook. If you run 4 wide and a couple of play action with your good running game then you will get about 200-250 passing yards a game. 300 will come. Just dont stop running. Keep the running game up and then go deep with santana on play action. Its gonna work at least once a game. Hope that helps some for you.

Passing takes a lot of practice, true, but I think there are some great plays in the 'Skins book.

Couple of my favorites...
I have Cooley in my depth chart as my #1 FB and #2 TE. There's a play under the Split Back formation where Portis, on the left side, stays in to block and then breaks out into the flat. Cooley, on the right side, runs out to the side then turns a 90 degree angle and runs across the middle about 8 yards in front of you. The receiver on the left I call a hot route and send him deep.

9 times out of 10, you can hit Cooley. But, if the safety isn't giving deep support, it's worth a shot to hit your receiver going long on the left side. If neither one of them looks like they'll get open, you start rolling out to the left behind Portis who should be blocking a blitz. After a moment, he lets to, the blitz comes through, and Portis is open to get a lot of YAC.



Another great play is a singleback formation with both receivers lined up on the left with Moss in the slot. Patten is out wide and runs a quick hook pattern for maybe 8 yards or so. Moss runs a slant across the middle and if he's in single coverage and there isn't a lot of pressure, you've got time for him to get open open the right side for about 20 yards. The play is called "Slot Under."



Most important thing to remember is that much like in real life, Moss in single coverage is a great thing. Send him deep a lot. If there's no safety help and he's going long, make sure you LEAD THE RECEIVER and don't bullet the pass unless he's wide open. Just tap the pass button and let it hang in the air. If you see him starting to get past his DB after about 10 yards or so, that's the time to throw it. Never wait too long, just hang it up there and you can get a huge gain.

If you like the counter, then there is plenty of that in the Pass Balanced Playbook. It is a good running and passing playbook.

I ended up changing my playbook to pass balance, and reading the defense better on the deep ball. When I see the safety creep up, and the corner is playing tight on Moss, I send him deep. Just like you said, lob it up there, and he runs underneath. I've had three 300 yd games in my last 5.

Nice. I love that playbook and I know exactly what you are talking about. Glad it worked out well for you. I always try to draft a big wideout with lots of ups to go opposite of Moss. That way if they double Moss then I can lob it up to my big guy.
