View Full Version : "a really big year" for Cooley

Interesting article on Cooley - the mohawk, dyed mustache, prior 'indecent proposals' with cheerleaders, one of the most productive Skins last year as a rookie - do we have a blossiming Riggo, Jr. here? I liked the part about losing 15 lbs. to get quicker on his blocks, maybe it'll help him stretch out his receptions even more this year. His QB/receiver realtionship with PR may be the biggest key (besides the O-Line) to Ramsey making something out of himself this year, not only for us, but as a legitimate NFL starter as well, IMO.

Thats good stuff man! It further solidifies my desire to buy a Cooley jersey. I bet he gets 750-850 yds and 8 TDs and makes alot of defenders look silly in the process.

This guy will be a great player for us for a long time. Classic Gibbs player. I hope his slight weight loss will make him faster on outs. That would make him even more of a weapon. I anticipate this guy to have many clutch 10-15 yd receptions this season. Him and Taylor were great draftees for sure in 2004.

I think he will do very well this year becuase Gibbs knows that he can get it done...Im guessing 500-600 yards 7 tds for him...

I agree as well. One of the best recent acquisitions thru the draft, skill-wise and value-wise.

I picture Cooley having the same impact as the Ravens' Todd Heap, they had very similiar rookie campaigns, with Heap moving up his 2nd year to "Super TE"
rankings - Cooley could very well follow the same path this year. Imagine him as the ultimate "3rd and 7" target, PLUS best Red-Zone size-mismatch, PLUS a solid blocker for any sweep or stretch run by Portis, PLUS Ramsey's favorite target late last year could equal possible Pro Bowl nods(?)

Did I miss Cooley's connection to Los Angeles? What is the deal with that?
Also, did I not get the whole article? Where was the mention of the cheerleaders?

From what I saw of Cooley in camp he is looking much quicker and faster last year. With all the weapons our offense has at the skill positions I think these yardage numbers are a fairly accurate representation of what to expect of cooley this year. Although, I anticipate Cooley lighting it up in the Red Zone. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cooley w/ 10+ TDs.

Someone was suggesting that Cooley might not be as much a part of this offense this year because they hven't been throwing that ball to him in the preseason. I believe the opposite. Gibbs is saving Cooley for the season and also giving Patrick a chance to get some chemistry with the guys that are new to the Redskins like Patten and Moss. Unfortunately, the cat is out of the bag on this guy and defenses are going to account for Cooley particularly in the red zone. I think Cooley has 55+ catches, 700 yards and 8 td's but his mere presence improves the offense becuse defenders will be forced to keep an eye on him.

like i said in another thread, gibbs hasnt shown much of anything from the h-back position this preseason, our h-backs could be dangerous for other teams early on because they wont know what to look for really

Cooley has great hands. He caught several balls late last season right at the goal line in traffic. It seems like he never dropped one.

This is freakin' amazin!
I've probably been to 90+ Redskins games since I was 5 years old and haven't missed a single game on TV in the last 31 years and I never noticed we had cheerleaders...
When did this happen???

I have six Redskins in my league team.
Santana, Cooley, Clinton, The Washington D (as a unit), Shawn, Sean, and Griff.
I'm going to check if Lavar is there actually, but I may be running out of room. :(

Another great pick up by Gibbs inc. Cooley will help this team get over the hump . And will be a force for years to come. All these positive additions of players that really want to be in Washington. They want to be here to play and win for coach gibbs and the fans. It's not always about the money , sometimes it's about Respect. It's time we get some. Love us or hate us but you will respect us.

I like Chris a lot and he will be a big factor again this season. However I think that he will not be the guy who we will go to as much this season as he was last season.
With better pass protection and quicker wide-receivers I think the WRs will get the ball more ofter this year. I think coach Joe knows that this season the team needs to have a deep pass threat in order to keep the defenses from stacking the line-of-scrimage like they did last season.
I believe that this year we will have a well balanced offense, spreading the ball around among all our receivers with enough deep passes to really keep the defenses off balance the entire game.
I can picture it now, off the same formation, play action, one time we pass deep to Moss or Patten, one time we go underneath to Cooley, one time we run a draw or screen to Portis, and another time we go to Jacobs or Thrash on a medium route over the middle. How can any defense match up with that? Now all that is needed is for Patrick to not give away where he is going with the ball by staring down the intended receiver and having the time to allow the deep pass to develop.
I think that the reason we have not seen Cooley much in preseason is just that Joe Gibbs wants other teams to see that we have a deep pass threat.
So, I think that while Cooley will still be a major factor in every game, he will not get as many receptions because we will have a much more effective balanced attack. And that is a good thing!

I really like your take on the '05 offense, but I was thinking of it differently. My take was the offense would be VERY similar to '04 with the exception that we go for the "home run" more frequently. I know in one of the season ending press conferances, Gibbs talked about taking 3-5 more deep shots per game. Who knows, but I think we will still be conservative with a deep threat./ Last year there was no threat.

The problem is that fantasy football has nothing to do with real football. People take it too seriously and think that winning in fantasy football makes them "football smart"... To me, FF should only be considered a fun way to enjoy games that don't envolve teams you care about.
Cooley is a good football player and maybe fantasy nerds don't think so, but who cares what they think. Fantasy guys just care about stats, and while that may work in baseball, it does not work in football at all.

I agree with you here. Look at how many shots they are taking downtown with Ramsey in these pre-season. He was 4 out of 10 for long passes. With his very good protection - he needs to get better.
Gibbs realizes that without a legitimate long pass threat, defenses will stuff the run and short pass game. He didn't bring in Moss, Patten and A. Brown to go short - they're there to stretch the field with speed.
Cooley will be one of the main "underneath" guys. Also will function as a possession receiver. I see Cooley as one of the top 5 "TE" in the NFL [yes, I know he's playing H-Back].

I just thought of something. I think most people would consider Cooley as the 4th best TE in the NFC East.
LJ Smith, Shockey, and Whitten are all considered better by most people.

Probably 3rd best right now, LJ hasn't done squat. Cooley will be recognized with the elite after this season.
