I really don't care about thei ranking in yard allowed as much as I do points allowed and turnover ratio!

The only stats that really matter defensively are turnovers, points allowed, and time of possession. If we can keep our own defense off the field for at least half the game, then they will be rested and just run over other offenses. JG is a ball control coach, so I hope we can actually get the first downs needed to move the ball and then run out the clock. We do that and we're fine.

We need to score more defensive Tds, I mean in Madden 06 I run a INT back with a CB or Safety every game so why can't they do it for real. Also Cooley is on pace for over 1000 yds. receiving. Sorry wrong forum.................

Coach Williams will have the D back at a top 5 ranking, again.

I think we might be able to get the top spot. If everyone stays healthy.

I can't see why not. We have playmakers all over this defense.

We were #3 without starting linebackers, defensive linemen, and a guy who wasn't supposed to make the team at SS.

I think the NFL rates defenses on yards but who freaking cares about yards? Points are all that matter and the Redskins were #2 in points allowed last year if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, I think we might give up a few more points and yards this year because we will score more points and have the lead more this year. Opposing teams will be trying to go down field, not run out the clock. So if the defense has a lower ranking, who cares as long as we are winning games (and seeing some good hits)?

I remain very concerned with Carlos Rogers and Walt Harris. One of them needs to step up. Right now that is the one chink in the armor.

You never know. Sometimes backups play with more heart than starters or "superstars"... But I think we'll be better... just not statistically better.

Gregg Williams has a system that works very well. Ok ,we lost Smoot and Pierce; however, on the plus side we have:
LaVar back from injury
Daniels back from injury
Bowen back from injury
Carlos Rogers learning the ropes
New plays and formations from Gregg Williams
Better offense (running game) keeps defense off the field
Only concerns are CB and DE pressure on the QB. I see this as a bright spot on the team. Definetly in the top 5 defenses in the NFL.

It was great to read an article today by Don Banks on SI.com about how Cinnci's top 4 offensive players (Palmer, Rudi, Chad, and TJ) are just as scary as any in the NFL, and then replay in my mind how our starting defense made them look like a JV squad in the first quarter of that preseason game.
Carson Palmer looked absolutely lost out on the field and for a while they only had two first downs, both on long scrambles by Palmer. Our line was owning the line of scrimmage and the DBs were in very tight coverage. I think our D can step up and shut down any group of players in the league, the only question is will our offense give us enough points to result in wins.
But for the life of me I can't figure out how all the so-called "experts" can whine all day about how we lost Smoot and Pierce and totally neglect the fact that we are upon the return of the "Mind Hunter", Lavar Arrington.
This defense is gonna shed some blood on the field this year, I can't wait to watch it happen.
