How are you measuring that, Seebs? It's 214 years since the great French Revolution, but many of those years were not democratic ones. The Thermidor wasn't a real democracy. The Directory was an oligarchy, Buonaparte was a dictator (Consul) and then an emperor. Then you have the Bourbon restoration (that Tallyrand was a real survivor). Then you have Emperor Napoleon III--not a great heir to his famous ancestor. After that, you've got pretty much non-stop democracy, barring only a few bad years during the Nazi occupation.

By the way, I'm a huge fan of Revolution and Buonaparte history. I love the way Bonaparte designed his tomb--that you have to bow your head to look at it. Classic Buonaparte. And I shall never forget what he said to the Armee d'Italie upon arriving to take his command:

"Soldiers! You are hungry and naked. The government owes us much but can give us nothing....I will lead you into the most fertile plains on earth. Rich provinces, wealthy towns, all will be yours for the taking. There you will find honor, and glory and riches."

Not to mention this gem to the Armee d'Oriente:

"I shall now lead you into a country where by your future deeds you will surpass even your past achievements that have already so astonished the world."

Now that's a general who could inspire his troops!

I was on vacation on the 14th and Hubbo mentioned Bastille Day (Do you call it that?) And I thought of you Seebs,

Hope you had a good one, sorry this is late, I've been playing catch up from vacation.
