News
Ravens' running back Jamal Lewis is upset that team officials have yet to offer him a contract extension. "The most disappointing thing is that they haven't had any discussions with us," Lewis told the Baltimore Sun on Friday. "My agent can't even get a telephone call. They made a promise to us, and I would not have accepted the plea bargain if I know I wasn't going to get a new deal. Instead, I went to the bottom of my life, I took a deal and served a sentence for something I didn't do." Lewis has one year remaining on a six-year contract.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome has admitted that he promised Lewis a new contract after the 2003 season. However, talks stalled when Jamal was indicted on federal drug charges in February 2004. Newsome is probably waiting to see how Lewis' surgically repaired knee and ankle hold up before he'll make a long-term offer. We'll keep you posted on this story, particularly if Newsome responds to the statements made by Lewis.

Some think he'll have a really good year ... I'm a little skeptical. He is a 2000 yard back though. I'm sure he'll get paid.

damn right he should get a new deal. any dude that rushes for 2,000 + should get a new deal. hes arguably the best back, cuz he can truck over someone, plus he has speed to break away

Big affirmative there, especially the way Boller has looked this preseason. Lewis may get 400 carries in 2005.

Lets get the box of Kleenex tissues out. Sorry, but if I am an NFL owner, I am not giving a big time pay day to someone accused of drug traffiking.

I will give him the fact that Newsome promised him a new deal after 2003. But you know what? A few things happened since then including: pleading guilty and having surgery. Both those things would give any team pause.

Also, this is the first time I have heard him say he was innocent. And what does a new contract have to do with pleading guilty? I had some respect for him for what he said when he came back talking about being stronger and wanting to tell kids to avoid making his mistakes.

I guess now he is back so SOP for Ravens. This is what you get when Ray Lewis is your team leader, I guess.

Had I known he was looking for a new contract I would have picked him for my fantasy team.

Wasn't it trying to score a new deal that landed him in prison and a halfway house?

Jamal isn't the only Raven seeking a contract extention. Ozzie has his job cut out for him...I could see this team (and primarily the defense) imploding due to salary constrictions.
