I actually had someone brighten up my day through all of this madness out here. Peyton and Eli Manning came throught Louisiana with the Red Cross. When they came to my site, me and a couple of my guys were sent as an escort for the both of them. It was pretty cool.
First thoughts:
Peyton just flat out isn't very talkative. I was with Peyton for about an hour and a half and the guy is just flat out hard to hold a conversation with. He is not the guy TV has made him out to be with commercials and interviews.
Eli is a trip. Easy going cracking jokes. I told him I was a Redskins fan so we went at it the whole time. I asked him what the worst thing about playing against our D was and he said just trying to make a read. He said you don't really worry about a rush coming from one of the ends so you know its coming from somewhere else. So you read the LB's and Safeties and boom someone like C Griff hits you. He was really fun to be around. I told him to take it easy on us.
Funniest moments:
1- a young kid comes up to Eli and ask for an autograph. Eli gives the autograph. The kid looks at it and says " Awww I thought you were Peyton, I didn't want your autograph, you're garbage." Throws the paper on the ground and walks over to Peyton. Kind of harsh for what they were doing. I was doing everything I could not to laugh.
2- An older guy comes up to both Eli and Peyton and tells them "Your daddy had a way better arm than both of you." to which Peyton replied "Yeah, but he played for the Saints."---the guy was wearing a Saints shirt.
All in all it was good to see kids faces light up for the few minutes they were there. And how just an autograph could for at least a few minutes erase the fact the some of these people lost everything and have nothing.
A buddy of mine said I was on SportsCenter so I guess that was cool but I didn't get to see.
Peyton has put together an bracelet (a-la Lance Armstrong) the reads PEY-Back. Its blue and will be sold at the first Colts home game. The proceeds will go back to the Hurricane victims.
