View Full Version : Ugh, my car got hit today

School started and I've been driving to school, everythings been fine. I get out early every day because I take a college course every Wednesday, but that means I only have four classes and I get out every day at 10:37. So today I'm heading out to my car and I start it up, when I notice there's a letter on my windshield wiper. It says..

"I'm really sorry, but I accidentally hit you slightly. It doesn't look like there is serious damage but if there is call me at <number> and I will pay for whatever I damaged.

(oh yeah, I hit the passenger door. so sorry again.)"

She didn't leave her name, though.

I realize that it was a really, really, really good thing that she left a note and I thanked her for it.

Anyway, after I read the note, I started yelling out words I'd never even heard before, all sorts of obscenities, before I calmed myself down and called my mother. She was pissed but said go inside and have her called down. I called the girls cell phone but she didn't answer, she was in class. So I copied down her plate number and went inside, they tracked it down and called her down, the school resource officer (SRO) did. She said yeah she hit it and that she was sorry and asked if it was serious. I said no, but it's really not that fun driving around town with dents in your door. The officer got pissed at me for saying that, I guess, saying that "accidents happen" and that I should stop grilling her or something. Anyway..

We walked out to the cars and he was explaining to her that she did the right thing with leaving a note and explained to me something, I wasn't really listening since this guy is an asshole. You'll see why later on.

He pointed out the damage on my vehicle, she messed up my front passenger side rim pretty good, left a scratch on my front passenger side bumper, and left three or four dents, not real big dents, but dents none the less, on my passenger side door. She had tire marks on her front passenger side bumper and that was kinda smashed in. I came out a lot better than she did. Anyway, he agreed that she definitely did the damage on the rim, but that the dents were previously there. I said "whoa pal, no. Those weren't there this morning." and he goes "I'm not your pal, get that straight. I'm a accident investigator and I've been doing this for eight years and those dents are not concurrent with the damage done to your car and her car." So I said "Give me the note, and I'll read it to you." He goes "I don't care what the note says, she didn't cause those dents." I had somebody ride in it this morning, and I asked him and he said there were no dents. So I call my mother and she is on her way from where she works. The girl is in tears now, and I offered her a napkin from my car, but she said she was okay. She was reallllly, really upset, understandably.

My mother arrives and looks at the dents and says "look, there's blue paint in that dent. her car is blue." And the officer said "looks like dirt to me ma'am." Dirt isn't blue, you moron. Anyway we exchange information and stuff but this definitely isn't going on our insurance. Way to small to go there, they have to pay for it all.

I mean, I love my car. I really, really do. It's a Monte Carlo and I treat that thing like it's..I don't know, something really special. Now I've gotta take it to a body shop and wait a few days for the car to be fixed up, having to drive my mothers car while she drives a rental, which the people that hit my car should pay for. It's a necessity for me to drive to school since I get out early every day, and I can't walk home. No buses run at 10:40 in the morning :/

Anyway sorry for the rant, but I'm just pissed off and having to go into work in 20 minutes doesn't help it either.

Sorry to hear about your car dude. Nobody likes to get their car smacked, but in a month you'll be happily on with your life again.

BTW, I think the SRO is just trying to score with the tear fountain. Oh and the next time you see him, you should ask him if he's made up his mind whether he is an SRO or an accident investigator because I seriously doubt he is both or, for that matter, qualified for either.

In any event, your insurance company will appoint a "real" accident investigator who, if there is any question, will go all CSI on that blue paint. If it ever ends up in court (between the insurance companies, not you and the girl) that SRO will get ripped to shreds if he tries to peddle that weak opinion of his.

At least you didn't get rear-ended by a Ford Probe. Those cars are expensive to fix(get your mind out of the gutter).

I understand that its your first car and now its a little damaged but really, there are a lot worse things in life, you shouldn't get so worked up over petty things.

Having said that, I do agree that whoever took down the report was a jerk and I would have probably read him the riot act. It sounds like the girl who hit you is a good person, she could have said nothing.

I wouldn't be mad if you know, I had some part in it. But my car was parked. Not moving. Completely still. You get my drift :(

And yeah, I really do appreciate her leaving a note. I was really steamed today so I may have came off as rude or something but if I see her again, I'm going to tell her I really appreciate the fact that she did leave a note there and that I'm sorry for coming off as rude. But I think that most everybodies general reaction to getting hit, especially if you're not there, is a big "WTF" and then your pissed for a while.

But I'm also mad becuase I have to take it to a body shop and leave it there for at least a few days. The ones around here take like two weeks to get you in and even though this is minor damage, they will still take their time with it and I'll still have to drive an ugly 4runner to school instead of a nice Monte Carlo.

That always sux when you car gets hit. I remember i was sleeping in my truck before class(i arrived a little early) and this one guy pulled up and hit my truck then when he opened his door it slammed into my door. I was soo pissed, but he ran off and went to class before i was able to get out. I was fuming mad! So i did what any other college kid would do! I jumped on his hood! I left a note with my number and said i think we are even, but if he didnt feel like it he could call me, yet he didnt.

On a side note, you now have a girls phone number!

Not really. I have gotten hit a few times and have even done the hitting a couple of times. I have actually been more angry when doing the hitting then when I've gotten hit. Usually I have an accident because I give other drivers too much credit... like expecting them to know that they should actually go when there is not traffic in a yield lane. I find that FAR more frustrating.

First accident, first car. And I'm still in high school. My reaction is and probably should be different than an adult who has been driving for a while :(

That's true. I'm sure that I felt a similar way when I got hit back then. then again, I drove a POS, so I might not've cared so much, lol.

Monte definitely isn't a POS. He's a very, very nice car :)

Not to turn this into a bad car crash theread but San I had a similar thing happen.

The best car I ever owned, as in newwest car, was a 1996 Dodge Neon (it was in the year 1998 thatn i bought it so not too bad). It was a good car and it treated me well. Well on Father's day in 2000 I drove out to my dad's house with my daughter and had dinner. I got home about 1 or 2 in the afternoon and parked my car on the street.

I went upstairs to my apartment for about 3 hours, playing with my daughter and checking my email. All of a sudden I heard a loud crash outside and I ran to my front window to look where my car was. I did not see it because it was now in my neighbor's front yard.

I ran outside not even bothering to put on my shoes and it was raining out. In my sokcs I looked down the street to the end of my block and I saw the car that hit me. The person was trying to start their car to get away. One of my neighbors jumped in his car and went after the person as they sped off.

I looked at my car and knew it was totalled. The entire back end was crumpled up. I also noticed the care down the road from me was clipped as well breaking a mirror and damageing their panel. After a few minutes the neighbor came back telling me the person took off but they got the license plate #. Just then the cops arrived.

They took my statement and the witness statements. The cops were very nice and all. They said the person was caught a few blocks down and they were definitely drinking and driving and the lucky thing is they had insurance. However when they were done witht he accident report they gave me a tcket. It seems I lost track of time and forgot to move my car to the opposite side of the road.

I was baffled. The cop tried to explain that even though the other person was at fault for the crash they had to give me the ticket since it was a violation and that is policy. I didn't blame the cop...really I was too stunned to do anything.

After the tow truck came I went upstairs took a shower and read the accident report. Only then did I notice the license plate of the person who hit me was a personalized plate. The plate name was, and I am not making this up, "Banshee".

I actually had to laugh even though my car was gone.

So if that story doesn't make you feel better...I don't know what will.

Is the chick that hit you cute, cause you could turn this around into a very positive story if you wanted to.

Is there a camera in the school parking lot? You might be able to tell if there is video footage if she did hit your passenger door or if it was smurf dirt.

Two weeks after I bought my very first car, it got hit while parked at a convenience store. (And I had made a point of parking way far away from all the other cars!) It was in the shop for over a week. Not fun, but also not that big of a deal.

Fender-benders happen. Count yourself lucky that the person who hit you owned up to it.

Saw her today at the place where I work at and tried to kind of grab her attention so I could say sorry if I came off as a jackass and such but uh, I guess she didn't see or didn't want to speak to me or something.

No camera in the parking lot as far as I'm aware, or else like half the school would be caught with some..substances..

And it is a big deal :( They are wanting us to put this on our insurance. That's a big, uh, no.

She did the right thing...and frankly, I'm shocked.

I've never known any adult who ever did that.

My husband had $3000.00 worth of damage done to his car at the mall once, no one left a note. My sister was in the Hospital and someone crushed her driver's side, no one bothered to leave a note

....I'm glad you tried to apologize...now let the insurance companies sort it out.

File a complaint with the school regarding the SRO. If you have an attorney, have the letter sent from his/her office. The girl did the right thing and I admire her willingness to accept responsibilty. I agree it sounds leek the jerk was trying to be a cool dude for the lady...

FYI - LMAO @ "smurf dirt"!
