Detached analysis at its best. A must-read for all educated Redskins fans.

I would add another thing to the "In Your Face" sction: Rod Gardner was INACTIVE for the Carolina game. Guess he couldn't "hang on" to a starting spot!

Excellent analysis dj!
I'm looking forward to seeing how Brunell does w/ our starting WRs.
Nice stat line on the tall WRs as well. I'll have to show that to a friend of mine who is a Jacksonville fan.
Again, Great Job!

Terrific feature article Mark.. Well Done ! :)
Who was Brunell’s favorite target?
Brunell spent the entire preseason playing with 2nd and 3rd stringers, most of which no longer are on the team. When Brunell entered the game in the 2nd quarter on Sunday, he suddenly had the opportunity to throw to Santana Moss and David Patten, who didn’t even play for the Redskins last year when Brunell was the starter. Who did he prefer? He actually spread the ball around fairly well. Let’s take a look at Brunell’s passing targets from Sunday’s game:
Moss: 4 Targets
Patten: 3 Targets
Cooley: 3 Targets
Thrash: 2 Targets
Royal: 2 Targets
This begs the question: Is this the result of Jack "The Posse Play Caller" Burns play calling as amended by Coach Gibbs? Or is this a veteran QB recognizing open targets and taking advantage?
Bear in mind there were no offensive TD's in the last game! (Allowing for the rather controversial interference call on Chris Cooley’s catch)

WOW...........That is a very good read. I like the way you layed down the stats for us. I wish there was a statistical category for why we lost to the boys 15 out of 16 times. That way Gibbs could analyze it and fix it. I think we lost our Rivalry MOJO when we hired Norv, Monday night we get it back!

Nice article Mark, very nice work.
We have discussed in threads about the timing and getting in sync with our wideouts, and it is the main reason I wish Brunell had more time in practice and pre-season before the switch was made. Ramsey's four completions to Moss and Patten yielded 90 plus yards, Brunell's 3 completions yielded 25 yards. I am hoping that the main focus of work this week was with Moss, Patten and Thrash, because if they can get that timing we have a dangerous receiver package.

Great question, Andrew. I was wondering this myself...
I think it may be a bit of both. Gibbs has clearly opened up the offense to more 3-WR sets...and putting more receivers into routes. I also think that Brunell has a fairly decent ability to check down to the different receivers. (Getting the ball to them is another story...lol)

Excellent work Mark. I can tell you are looking ahead to Dallas:
Last Sunday against Dallas , he racked up an impressive 5.8ypc, his best rushing efficiency since becoming a Redskin.

Great job DJ! I like the bit about spreading the ball around too. I was happy to see Robert Royal actually get a few balls thrown his way, one was on a very well executed roll out play (my favorite in Madden 06) and the other was on a similar play where Brunell lobbed it only a foot too far for RR, if he catches that ball then it could be a big play. I like Royal I hope he can continue to develop as a weapon, especially between the 20s.

good job, dj. Interesting stuff that really paints a picture on how we need to win. I'm looking forward to reading more of these in the coming weeks.

Nice work Mark! Some very intriguing stats.
Hopefully Brunell will get his timing down with the recievers in only a week.

Great Job!! Very in depth stats. It'll be interesting to see these stats over the course of the year. By the way I believe Big Ben Rothlisberger had a perfect passer rating last week. (158.3)

Thats wierd...NFL.com didn't even include Ben in their stats this week.

Maybe they only count guys with over 11 passing attempts. *rim shot* ;)

I think its a minimum of 14 attempts.
They didnt have Ramsey on there either with his 11 attempts.

Mark, first off it was great to party with you and the HR crew at the opener! Second, great stats! I have a feeling this will be one of my favorite columns as the season continues. Jeez, I knew Springs was awesome, now I'm even MORE pissed he got screwed for the Pro Bowl - plus he led the TEAM with 6 sacks! What other corner did ALL THAT!?!? Pure B.S....

great stats...that stat about Portis's average yards per carry on first downs would have been a lot different if he'd broken the long one on a first down, of course, so i wouldnt worry too much about that one.

Speaking of stats. Our D is ranked 2nd and O is ranked 15th both better than Dallas...

dj - excellent read. I especially liked the "in your face" column. I'm sick and tired of the whinners who still bemoan the loss of Champ, Coles and claim that Portis is just a benefactor of a great running system.

Probably not...since he is injured. He may not play on Sunday....
