Ok, and here is the discussion I propose to hR. Lets look at the facts. Hall is now 31, has been here since 2003, missed most of plast season, now is likely going to miss another week, making it two weeks this season and his kickoffs have not been as good as they historically were when he was with the Jets. Putting that side by side with his salary, that is pretty high for a Kicker, and so I ask....

With Tupa out for the season, Hall beginning to show an inability to stay healthy, is this the time to look to the future? Look to the future at both P and K and get these spots nailed down by young guys like Novak that can hold these jobs for years? How long do we allow Hall to hang on with injury? When do you hti that point of moving on?

What I wanna see...a FG or two this week. I wanna see Novak handle it!

I think were stick with Hall's salary this year no matter what, so I say we keep him on, along with Novak and wait to see what happens. If we are going to have a playoff run I would feel much better with Hall kicking to win the game that might get us in than the rookie. I say sit him until he is 100% and then put him back in.

I think kickers have a longer shelf life than everybody else, I mean how about Morton Anderson? If you can kick well, you can do it for a long time. As far as when to cut our losses on Hall....hadn't really thought about it too much. I am one of those guys that just EXPECTS a kicker to make FG's and EP's. But I agree you have to have a good kicker nowadays. I can't remember this many games (past 3 or 4 seasons) being lost by poor kicking.....(except Scott Norwood!!!!!!). Ok I'm done - I say Hall if he's healthy. When he's in, he's money. Keep Novak on speed dial...

We'll see what happens with Hall, but if he's not going to be able to get healthy then we have to IR the guy. We need the roster spot. His salary is high and he hasn't exactly been earning it, but nothing is going to happen about it until after the season is over at the earliest.

I'm not ready to close the book on them (Hall/Tupa) yet. I do however think that we should consider FA kicker/punters... They are both positions I do not want to build through the draft. I still can not believe the Raiders used a first rounder for Janikowski.

That is where I am right now as well. It is not the money thast is killing us, it is the roster spot. Hall is likeley going to make my list of players we should cut in January because of his high salary and leg problems. But you can not cut him now. If he can not get heathly we can not afford to have an extra roster spot spent on an emergency kicker. It may be time to look at IR for Hall and a reevaluation after the year is done.

See, I want the roster spot, but in reality we'd be making room for a guy who would be inactive on game day so I'm not stressing it.

Im hoping the new punter and kicker we picked up are doing pretty well. If so i think we could cut loose Tupa/Hall. That would be a savings of 2 mil next year. So who knows.

I really want Novak to get a shot, but that's mainly because I'm a UMD homer! Either way though, Hall seems to be out way too much to make it worth keeping him around. Yeah he's a great kicker, but if he's out 3 or 4 games a year, we have some nobody kicking in his place. I'd rather see Novak get a shot and be here the next 10 years.

What was Novak's FG range in college?

He could hit 50+ in college.

Depends how well Novak does when the heat is on. He hasn't yet had that kind of pressure.

QB's and Kickers are going to be the death of this organization.

He could hit 50+ in college.

With a very high percentage I might add.

Edit: Ok, he is 35 of 45 outside of 40 yards but 5 of 7 outside of 50 yards. That's pretty damn good for outside 50!

Not in the NFL he hasn't, but I've seen this kid make many clutch kicks when the pressure is at its highest in college. I know it's not the same as the NFL, but it should give some indication that he thrives on pressure.

It would be great if Novak took the job and never looked back that would make cutting Hall alot easier. He made two really big extra points last game so maybe that gave Novak enough confidence to hit his FGs. We shall see...........

It seems like kickers are getting hurt a lot more now. You got Hall, Akers, and the Cowpokes lost a kicker in the preseason, which is why that sorry Cortez is kicking now. I wonder why.

With the amount the salary cap will probably jump there really isnt a $ issue with hall. Kickers have fairly long lives so i wouldnt put it past hall to play for some time still. In his first 7 years in the NFL he missed...1 game. Last year he got hurt, it happens, he missed 8 games.

This year he is probably going to miss 2 games due to a "strained right quadricep". Thats not a serious injury, dont think we should be counting him out just yet, 74% FG, 55 long, 98% extra points made.

I dont see us throwing aside a proven kicker under contract. I agree it would be nice to have a young kicker with the upside Novak has, but he hasnt proven anything..."in the NFL". He hasnt kicked a FG yet, just extra points. Not taking anything from the guy, kicks well and made a good block to save the game. He had a great college career and has a chance at a great one in the NFL, just dont think its here right now. If he is still available in the off-season i can see us giving him a shot in pre-season.

My points is, Halls cap hit wont be bad once the cap jumps. So, thats a non issue. The issue comes down to Hall being healthy and which kicker stays. We all know how Gibbs like his veterans. So, I dont see Hall being released, now or at the end of the season. Gibbs allready said he wants another WR. I can see Novak being released in 2 weeks if Hall is fully healthy, for the roster spot.

*dont kill me* but, i can see dallas signing Novak if we release him. They arent happy with Cortez by any accounts from what i see in their forums and they had him in training camp before we signed him. I think they regret signing cortez and not Novak now. :banghead:

Personally I'd like to see if Novak can do the job. If he can I say give it to him. This is the second year Hall has been injured and he's beginning to remind me of Brett Conway. Conway was a decent kicker but just couldn;t stay healthy.

Regarding Tupa, I think he's done. I really like him but he's 39 and I say why not give this other guy a chance to be our punter. "Give him a chance." "Just give the kid a chance!"

Why would we not want Novak to come in and kick lights out and become our solid kicker for years? Sorry can't attached to any of these guys really, especially a kicker. With that being said, I would love for the punter position to get solidified with a young guy as well. I guess we will see what Frost can do. From what we've seen, it looks like a very volatile position.

if i was a kicker i'd be scared if the Redskins called. we are jinxed.
