Spence

I know some people are going to think this is just Spence taking one of many shots at Bush, but I can't imagine what he's thinking right now. He's speaking at this very moment and it is just a bunch of nonsense. The White House sent out a notice that Bush would be giving a major speech today to defend and explain the Iraq War. The point of it was to get out in front of the new stories this week commemorating the 2000th death of American servicement in Iraq, which should happen any moment now.
But Bush has spent pretty much his entire speech talking about how awful Al Qaeda is. How terrible, how murderous, how bigoted, how primitive, how violent Al Qaeda is. Hey, no argument, Mr President. They're the scum of the Earth. I'd like to see every last one of them in chains or in an unmarked grave, whichever is quicker, cheaper, and easier. But what's that got to do with Iraq? It seems like he is still trying to conflate Iraq and 9/11/01. He can't come out and say Saddam is responsible for 9/11/01 anymore. That won't fly anymore, not even in front of the friendly audience he is speaking to right now. But he's still trying to justify the Iraq War by talking about how awful Al Qaeda is.
What he doesn't get, I suspect, is that most Americans wholeheartedly agree with him about Al Qaeda -- and wish he'd done more to destroy them instead of wasting time, treasure, and blood in foolish misadventure in Iraq.
I just can't believe the President of the United States is still playing this shell game, even now -- on October 25, 2005, after all we've seen and been through. I don't have high expectations for this administration, God knows, but I just find this so difficult to believe. How many more days are we going to waste while this administration spends more time trying to win a public relations war at home rather than a terror war abroad?
