Ok, I was looking at stats from the conversation on Moss, and I noticed something interesting. OUr single season rushing record is one of the absolute LOWEST of all 32 teams. At a glance (I could be wrong) it appeared only the Texans and Jags had lower marks.
With our proud history, I'm surprised this isn't higher... much higher. So my question is this, when will that record get pushed upto a more respectable number? Will Clinton Portis be the one to get us there? I love Stephen Davis, but I want his name out of the record books. Oh and by the way, he is in there twice (Panthers and Redskins).

Note - I think Portis is on pace to break it, and I'm not one to care about stats, butI'd like to see him top 1500 because I think it'll mean we are winning more games.

i'd like to see Portis break it and i agree about getting Stephen Davis out of there. i like Terry Allen but i was surprised that his and Davis's stats were among our team history leaders.

I think the thing here is that even the though the Skins are traditionally a good running team, they have always had someone spell their main runner. Riggens had Washington, ogers had Bryant, Byner had Riggs and Ervins.
Stephen Davis would have won the rushing title in 1999 and set a record he would not have later broke (2001) if he hadn't missed the last two games injured.

Great point chrisbob! I do agree that we've seemingly always had that guy to spell the starter and even though we still have a capable backup in Betts, maybe Portis can at least push us to 1500.

I like 1500.And with the way our O-line has been playing, (very good IMO up to now) I think he can get there.

Let call him and get him out of the booth. He could be our big FA next year!

I just can't get over that we are third worst in the league??? I would have guessed more "middle of the pack". I mean Texans and Jags!!?? Thats it.

Don't Forget that the texans and jags have absolutely no history. If we don't see the record broken soon, i think it means we missed the playoffs.

It is amazing that Davis is in there twice....that has to be a record of some sort.
Damn you Spurrier....damn you to hell.

Portis would have gotten it last year if he didn't get hurt for the last game

I think for Portis to set the franchise mark, a couple of things have to happen. He is not a pounder like Davis so he won't get a couple of extra yards on his own when there are not any to be gained via the blocking, so the passing game has to continue to remain top notch and we have to remain injury free on the O line. If those things happen and Portis himself stays healthy, then yeah, I think he can do it this year.

I think I'm also right in stating that Davis is the first Redskins player to ever go over 1,000 yards in 3 straight seasons!

Why is everyone so shocked? Aside from maybe Riggins, Stephen Davis was the best RB ever to play here numbers wise. You can argue alot of names but I'm looking at consistancy. If Spurrier hadn't criminaly run the guy outta town, Davis would probably have about 6 1000 yard rushing seasons in a row. He played injured until Spurrier made him sick of a team he was the heart and soul of and didn't have 1/3 of the offense any other back in Redskins history had aside from the 99 season. Why would you want Stephen Davis out of the record book? Is it the fact that he carried the team for 3 and a half season and NEVER complained until he was put in a situation that made even Darrell Green complained? Maybe it was the constant workman like attitude on the field? Oh I know. It was the charity foundation he started in the DC area that rubbed everyone the wrong way wasn't it. Everyone has the right to their opinion but I think it's awful that a player who gave so much to this franchise and the commity doesn't deserve to be in the record books in some people's eyes.

Davis is gone-and I have ZERO regrets (as of this point in time) about him leaving-......Yet at the time I was clearly upset by the move. NOW we as fans must move on and embrace our NEW RB CLINTON PORTIS.

Riggo did his best work for us in the postseason.

Portis shatters the mark this year.
Now that the passing offense is rolling, people are going to start giving Portis more room and as the weather gets worse, I look for alot of big games from Portis and Betts.

The stat itself is trivial.
The backfield during Gibbs' tenure was shared, feature back, 3rd down back, goaline/short ydg back. A good policy for RB to keep them healthy a full season. It really isn't a reflection of how good or bad our backs were. Also back in those days a 1000 yds was tough to get and the NFC east was the toughest division in football.
As far as Davis I wish no ill will against him or his records. Some say to let go of Davis, well ok why don't you? It's his record, he earned he never did anything but rush his a$$ off for us. Why would you want the record broken just for the sake of breaking it?

Even though I want the record broken, I agree that Davis gave his all and he was on of the best RBs in my time as a Skins fan. He played hurt more than any player I can remember and when he and Tre Johnson were in the lineup together (almost never) it seemed we couldn't lose.
