View Full Version : Whats the answer for the D-Line???

it obvious that we have considerable pressure applying pressure with just our front 4, and with no 1st round pick in the upcoming draft, it will be difficult to fill the need using the draft. Personally I feel as though if we get someone who can get 10-15 sacks on the D-Line, our D will be close to unstoppable. Whats your solution to this problem?

Trade Ramsey and a pick for young DE or a earlier pick

If this team could afford to bring in a player who can expected to get 10-15 sacks I would be shocked. The skins should just look through the league and see what high motor players they can bring in, cause that will lead to a lot of sacks with good coverage. But, as it stands right now there is nothing the Skins can do, so why worry about it.

How do you figure? we cannot use the draft to bring in someone to help us?. Wasn't cooley selected in the third round. I am not in favor of bringing in a FA. Iwant to see us getting to the draft. To me if the Cowboys can make great selections at DE, we can as well.
I say we trade Ram for a 2 or 3, package that with our number 2 now for a mid to late number 1 and get a guy in the first round. Or trade Ramsey for a number 2 or 3 and get 2 guys on the dline.

I'm beginning to wonder. First we pass on Chris Canty in the draft, so I'm thinking to myself, Ron Warner must have proved he is an effective DE in this league, we don't need a DE. Then we cut Ron Warner. Never sign anybody else. WTF Greg Blache.

I would like to keep Ramsey as a contingency plan, but he seems to expendable at the moment so I say trade him for a draft pick or a DE.

He's getting a Ray Lewis type deal according to most reports, and we definitely can't afford that. Although it is nice to dream about it

And if he gets that kind of money then John Abraham will ask for something similiar. So either the Jets sign him or they franchise him and trade him. So dream about Abraham not Freeney. He is just as good but he has been injured alot. He has put on 10lbs of muscle and he has been more durable this year.
He would make our defense AMAZING!!!

I agree. Abraham is probably the guy we may have a chance at landing. Jets need a QB, and Abraham is unhappy where he is, working on a contract that would keep him quite and happy is what's going to be a problem.

This is supposed to be a deep draft for d-linemen. If we can get one with the 2nd Rd. pick which i assume we still have, that would be nice. I'm sure Ramsey will want a trade so getting a draft pick for him will help. I expect both Freeney and Abraham to require huge contracts which the salary cap challenged skins won't be able to afford.

What's the answer for the D-Line?
Quite simply: Better players.
We have a great scheme that (sort of) does the job for now, but if we had one great pass rusher, then we'd be in really great shape. We're probably going to need to trade Ram or someone else to get a good draft pick to use on a DE, or maybe spend on one in FA, but it's our #1 concern right now.

Patience. Whatever we do lets not make a move to give a big contract to some has been. I would rather draft and develop one. I believe this draft class has quite a few as long as we can finagle a good pick.

Abraham is only 27 years old, and no one is immune to injury. What's wrong with bringing someone like Abraham in, and drafting a young guy? Wynn isn't getting any younger, and even though Daniels had a good game, but is not consistant.

Just think that we will become the junk yard for some of these players if we go in that direction. I say we use the draft....You're right Wynn isn't younger, but I thought he restructured this year. I just thought that Abraham was having issues with his back...last year. AM I right.

I don't buy this argument for a second... that 10-15 sack guy is exactly the wrong type of player for this defense...This defensive scheme is about being multi-faceted...Beyond the freaks of nature, this type of player is extremely one-dimensional...they usually are a speed guy that can only rush the quarterback...this type of player causes alot of trouble for your run defense...
We need to be looking to add balanced defensive linemen...we need guys that can get to the quarterback, but are also very good run defenders... I think that we have one of those guys on the roster already...his name is Evans, and i think with a little bit of time clemons (nic that is) will develop into that type of player....
That being said we should be focusing at least a couple of picks in this years draft to that end...it is not going to take a first or even a second you can use a 3rd or 4th round pick to find a guy like that...
I don't think this defensive line needs a difference maker as much as we need more young defensive lineman that can do it all, and most importantly we need guys that are non-stop effort!!!...that is the key to improving this defensive line...young guys that never stop.
If you need an example of the type of guy that i am talking about, go back to the tape of the Giants game and check out number 72...OSI UMENYIORA, from troy state...drafted in the 2nd rounder 2 or 3 years ago

There should be some good young speed guys in the 2nd and 3rd round this year that could help us.
-Larry McSwain {UAB}, Elvis Dumervil {Louisville}, Darryl Tapp {VT}, Tamba Hali {Penn State}.
As for this year we have to hope that the young guys Nic Clemons, Aki Jones and Demtric Evans keep improving.

Getting Abraham would make our defense downright nasty, even if you don't buy into the free agent route. I think he would really work out well here frankly. If we can't acquire him, we will probably get someone with our first draft pick which would also be a very good way to go considering the draft is loaded with good dlineman. I really think this longstanding problem will finally be resolved this offseason considering the circumstances. Daniels has been disappointing.

I think the Skins don't need Freeney or Darren Howard or John Abraham. They would be great, but far too expensive. What they need is a situational pass rusher who can come in on obvious passing downs to rush the QB. They can get one in free agency or in the draft relatively cheaply. On top of that, the Skins could use a big End for 1st/2nd down who is over 300 lbs and can stuff the run. They can fill both these needs without breaking the banks or making a stupid trade.

I think overall we should use reasonably priced free agents to fill some of our depth concerns on both sides of the line. For example, Griffin and Rabach have been two really good freeagent signings for both lines. Both these guys may be getting paid a little more than "reasonably" especially Griffin but with their production they've earned their salaries IMO. I think we are starting to do a better job at not overpaying and finding FA's that fit into our overall team philosphy.
That's not to say we cant find talent in next years draft without a 1st round pick either. I think between free agency and the draft we should look to improve our depth at DE, DT,TE, OT, OG and ST's. We already have a lot of playmakers on offense and defense under contract next season. We need atleast one starting caliber pass rusher at DE and then some good quality back ups at the positions I mentioned above.

So AKH, what you saying is that we need a Kenard Lang, or a N.D Kalu? I am saying that half jokingly ofcourse becuase I do believe that statement. And I believe either one of those players or somebody similiar would be ideal in our defense.
We should be able to sign somebody in that class at a bargain price and let Daniels go in the process. We need an end that is about 255-270lbs with some speed. Someone that will play the same role as C. Clemons but bulkier.

ND Kalu or Matt Roth would be perfect. A fast pass rusher who doesn't have to play everydown.

I'd like to see us get Tapp from VA Tech, he is an excellent player and would be nothing but beneficial to this team as he matures and grows. Then I'd like a run stopping DE on the other side. Just to bad Strahan's don't grow on trees, he is the best of both worlds, and simply is just an amazing player.

Draft DL picks - even if they are second or third rounders. We will trade Ramsey for the best offer (2nd or 3rd). We will let Daniels and/or Wynn go, so there's your money.
Develop the backups - Aki Jones, etc.
The Redskins have not drafted a DE picks in a decade. Now is the time. A decent DE sitting next to Griffin will immensly improve this DL.

I have doubts we'll ever see a Dwight Freeney or even a Chris Canty type of player on this defense. They are pin your ears back, rush the passer defensive ends. The defensive plan here seems to bring the pressure from non-conventional positions, CB-safety, stunts and position switches. Even though they have been beaten badly at it, run defense is the first and most important job of a DE in our defense. Can you see Freeney concentrating on the run?

I can agree with that, but I think that GW's underlying belief is that more pressure is better than less pressure. If we have a solid DE -- or DT for that matter -- who can get upfield and disrupt the play, without compromising containment (i.e someone in the Mathias Kiwaunka mold), I think he would take it in a heartbeat. That adds an element of gameplanning for the opposing offense before GW even puts pencil to paper when coming up with a gameplan.

I wish we could solve the D-line problems via draft, but I don't think we'll have a high enough pick.
And since we're wishing, I wish we could also draft Ahmad Brooks - let him learn next year, and put him at MLB when Lemars 2 year extension runs out. That would be an awesome LB Corp - Arrington, Brooks, Washington.
But yeah, I doubt we'll do anything via draft since we aren't going to have a pick - maybe late rounds, but also I imagine we'll be trying to get Tackles or something, because we can't have Ray Brown coming in if someone gets hurt.
We'll probably pick up some no-namer and he'll perform average or slightly above average for the next few seasons.

I would prefer a DT myself as far as free agency goes. They are far more affordable than DE. I think Evans and Clemons can mature into better DE's. But with Noble hopefully gone after this year and SAlavea mainly due to injury not having a season anything like last year we need help at DT first. Right now we have Aki Jones and a sore footed Salavea and a hurt hip Griffen and Noble who has played basicly 3/4 of a season since sighning here as our DTs. And our first draft pick will be a MLB Marshall has did an admirable job but they will get a young stuff the run MLB next year. Lemar will rotate at the OLB and Holdman will be gone as well.

6'-1 and 260 at D-tackle? no way. those guys from Va Tech are always undersized, just well-coached. they rarely translate to the NFL. see Corey Moore. set all kinds of records at 6'-1 and 225 at defensive end.

evry one is in here talking bout doing wonders ofrour d and stuff. come on people first we have had injuries so some depth migh help but we are still ranked 7th in the legue and thats after having to face o's ranked 1,3,7,8 and 12th.
now if we were the bucs and had faced no offense betyter than 18th than we would also have the best d in the league.
next we just got lavar back and i think our problems on the runs has beenm because holdman is no lavar.
next lavar gives us a presences that will help with our pass rush and blitzes.
desides peirce this is still the same d that was 3rd in the nfl last year. i think we have one hell of a d and and rough start against some good teams should not blind u to that.
now i think we do need to draft on d this year. just to add some depth but we have a very good d and i love them, excpt holdman lol

Renaldo Wynn is huge for an end and he's a good run stuffer, but it seems like Phillip Daniels is not quite big enough to be a great run stuffer and not fast enough to be a great pass rusher. i would rather have another run stuffer there and bring in a situational speed rusher at his spot from time to time. Ryan Boschetti is bigger and might be better against the run, so maybe he's being groomed to replace Daniels, but that still leaves a void for the speed rusher.
can we hedge our bets on Brandon Noble making a come-back? he's a big dude but of course 2 years in a row on I.R. doesnt bode well.
