Everyone,
Sometimes the itch to look forward is irrepresible. So I began thinking about the SB next year (I am not such a homer to think we might make it this year - sorry). Besides, who wants to go to Detroit - next year we would go to Miami! South Beach anyone?
So let's look through the crystal ball and think:
First up: Who do we re-sign? Luckily we have very few FAs of consequence (assuming the HR list includes all FA types). Here's the list:
R. Cartwright - Frankly I wouldn't mind losing him especially with Manuel White coming off the IR. Either way he won't be expensive.
B. Kozlowski - easy to re-sign or replace.
R. Royal - same.
E. Albright - our long snapper needs to be re-signed but should not be expensive.
R. Brown - retiring
D. Evans - good, young DL who should be re-signed, not high-profile.
K. Campbell - ST standout LB, should be re-signable
C. Clemons - LB making a difference on the field now, re-sign
W. Holdman - assuming Lavar comes back then this guy is expendable.
A. Jimoh - if we can't find another player to be a standout ST player and not embarass us in the defensive backfield then that is on us - let him go!!
We should also assume that we will trade Ramsey for a mid-round pick and re-structure Lavar in some way. And we should also assume that Brunell will continue to play at a decent level and Campbell won't see the field for another year.
Then we have the draft: We don't have a 1st rounder nor a 4th rounder (to Denver) but got an extra 6th (gardner). i think we have our others (not sure) which would mean a total of 6 picks with two decent ones.
What would we focus on given the current make up of the team?
1. An impact DT/DE for sure.
2. A powerful TE probably.
3. OL depth.
4. DB depth.
I have no opinion on the FA front just yet but it would mean an improved defense from this year and possibly an upgrade on the OL to improve the offense.
Then Miami! How does that sound to everyone?

I can't look past Tampa this week. Also, I concede nothing as far as where we'll end up this year. We can play with anyone in the NFC right now.
I also have a very special feeling about next year, and I've wanted to post a thread about it for a while. But like everyone else, I can't look past this Sunday's game.

Its two days until gameday, so i'm too focused on this Sunday's game against the Tampon Bay Bucaneers to fathom thoughts of next year super bowl. But yes, Miami is a good place to host the Super Bowl. How far is the Stadium from South Beach?

What about the Super Bowl in 10 years!!??? We can win that one, too!!!
Let's have a winning season this year, and HOPEFULLY make the playoffs, and then try and improve next year as well. We haven't had a winning season in awhile, and it's been even longer since we've been good enough to make or win a Super Bowl, let's keep some perspective on what we're hoping for here.
As far as looking that far ahead when we have a whole second half of this year to play seems a bit...well... Let's just focus on this year, and hope that next year, and this year, and every year forever we win the super bowl, cause I bet that's what we all want.....

-I believe Ryan Clark's contract ends this year.
-We need to resign him. Kozlowski has to go. Royal should be kept and will be for a bargain.
-I want raymer and friedmen off my roster. We need to draft a young center to develop.
-I agree with letting go of holdman, he is ok but i would rather develop some youth.
-Cartwright is tough to let go. But keep in mind betts might leave, which allows cartwright to stay and broughton to contribute also.
-If we trade ramsey i think we might score big if we play our cards right. There are alot of teams that need a qb badly right now. And then there is a whole other group of teams who might be looking good now, but they are rolling with old vet qbs and need at least to start considering the future. Ramsey should either be traded for a DE or a pick that turns into a DE.
-Jimoh- i have mixed feelings about. He is an impact special team player and although he does get burned a bit he has been put in some tough spots this year and most of the time handled it well. But either way we need to pick up another backup CB.
-The other thing we could look at is picking up a big receiver. However I really like how our halfbacks and TEs fill the role of posession receiver and think we have more important needs.
-Other than that i think we should draft some more offensive linemen in the later rounds of the draft to develop, we should always be developing the line it makes everything work.

Let them learn under the system and Mr. Bugel so they are well prepared to step in when they need to be. Rabach should be around for awhile, so I don't know about acquiring a new young center yet but it's certainly not a bad idea. Let's worry about Tampa and this season before we even get into next year though.

I'd put it like this

2. OL
3. DB
4. WR
I don't see muc of a need for more TEs...but I could be wrong.

I also agree BWPARKER's assessment.
It is the way to shore up and rapidly improve across the board. Allows coaches more players to fit in situations, use additional formations and less time worrying about masking a given area, instead working more from an area of strength!

Agreed, but the WR needs to have size (obviously), and I think picking up a TE for insurance somewhere wouldn't be a bad idea.

I don't think it would be a bad idea. I'd certainly grab a TE before I grabbed another RB or QB...but I think we are hard-up for another starter on the D-line and more depth in the treches on both sides.

Don't want to go to Detroit? I don't think anyone had problems with Minnesota in 92.

I'm not going to look past Tampa Bay this week. But, Holdman should go next year. And don't give Ramsey away so soon.

i for one belive until we lose we can win it all. i am a fan and think my team is unstoppable.
i dunno man but this is the best team we have had in years and we have already beat 2 division leaders and beat the cowbpys in big d and almost be the broncos prob;y the second best team in the afc.

What's up with this thread? It's week 9 and we're making personel moves for next year? A lot can happen in half a season. This makes no sense.

Hey, the way we are going now, I am EXPECTING them to be playing here in Arizona when it comes here in 2008. I want them to become the premier franchise of the 2000s, 3 in a row!

I agree with you. I think whoever wins the NFC East probably gets the #2 seed and has a decent path to the NFC championship game. Atl and Car have pretty easy schedules, so I wouldn't be surprised to see one of them win 13 and take the 1st seed. The NFC North is a lock for the #4 seed... Which means the NFC East champ and Seattle are fighting for #2. If the NFC East champ is ahead of Seattle (they still have to play Ind, at Philly, and NYG) or in our case tied (we have them on tiebreaker), the NFC East team gets a first round bye and a probable home game against a bad road team in Seattle...at that point, you're one game from Detroit.

exactly.
looking at our schedule and our nbfc record and home record we have it in our favor to possibly win this division. its in our hands. and if we win this division i am pretty sure we get the number 2 and possibly the number 1 seed. remebr carolina and atl have to play each other a twice and theres nothing saying we can't go 8-0 in the second half lol. wishfull thinking but its possible.
this is the time of year when teams make that run. the giants have the hardest of all of the east in the second half schedule wise and we hold the tie breaker over the cowboys right now and still have to play them one more time in our house.
i like how we finish up against the east with 2 at home. and if we have to play at home with a bye in the playoffs we could really make it to detriot. thats why i say until we aint in the playoffs or we lose in the playoffs its all still possible

I just can't believe that anyone is looking ahead to next year's SB when this season is only half complete, we are 5-3 and solidly in the playoff hunt. What's more, tell me we can't compete with any team in the NFC this year? Our only focus at this point should be this week's game with TB.

I haven't checked the thread since I started it. Wow, so many of you thought this thread was a dumb idea in the middle of the year. I can understand that.
I am a huge fan and way into this season but my mind wanders constantly and especially late at night, and i start thinking about personnel moves..
It is interesting to see the upbeat nature of the comments before the TB games. Does everyone still feel as good about this year?
I do hope we can go to the playoffs this year but i think we are below Carolina at this point. We can play with Seattle and Dallas (obviously, we beat them) and Atlanta is a wild card with Vick. So you never know - but there is no way we could beat Indy or Pittsburgh right now.
Hey, conference champion? I think we would all take that right? If that happens, you guys go to Detroit and I will take next year in Miami.
BTW - Nice choice 2007 - Kansas City? Don't hold your breath for 2008.

We definately need to be thinking about a WR who can actually compliment moss. It would be awesome if we could somehow land santana's little brother in 2 years...

I've entertained those same thoughts while watching Sinorice torch some teams secondary earlier this year.
