I will not be smoking anymore.

I've been about 3 hours and some now without one. When we were in Victory formation and downing the ball I started to suck one down and I had to tamp it out real quick as the clock wound down to 0:00. I gave the rest of my cigarettes and my lighter to a friend of mine's girlfriend.

I bought some gum and hard candy to help me. I will have to stay away from the beer until I get over the hump.

BTW, good job DJ. Drink a lot of alcohol to get over the itchiness man.

Not so bad right now....although I have been sweating a bit more. :banghead:

Its all good. For most of the game tonight, I thought we were dead in the water. Our Redskins prevailed. Going to the playoffs is a much greater reward than the discomfort I'll have in itchiness. ;)

Here's a little program that really helped me quit last August.

http://www.xarka.com/freeware/

It's called Quitcounter, you program it with the day you quit, how much you smoke a day, how much a pack costs etc etc, it tells you down to the second how long you've quit how much money you'ved saved etc. Really helped me get past the first week of torture. I chew gum like a maniac now but haven't had a smoke in almost 17months. It sits in your toolbar so you can click on it for some moral support whenever you need. I looked at it and figured well I've gonne 3 days, I can do one more. I'll post an example of Quitcounter display.

Good luck!!

My name is Daryl,
I have stopped cigarettes for 1 year, 4 months, 27 days, 14 hours, 56 minutes and 36 seconds (514 days).

I've not smoked 10292 cigarettes, and saved $2,759.72.
I've saved 35 days, 17 hours and 42 minutes of my life.

I'll copy and send this to you in PM in case you miss this.

Thanks for sharing this info.
This sounds like an interesting tool that plays to a few segments of quitting.
The problem that I have with all tools is that they keep you thinking about smoking.I believe it's the habit[mental and repetitious side]side that's the hard part to break.I subscribe to the out of sight... out of mind philosophy.
However,I believe this is a good tool in the very early stages, and it's a great reference, for later on down the road,to look at the stats from time to time.
By the way,I quit smoking cigarettes[Cold Turkey] 2 years ago today!:)
I had a few quick puffs off of a cig this past summer and it only reenforced my decision to quit.It tasted like crap....just like my very 1st one!
Good Luck....You Can Do It!!!

for the smokers who are quitting...god bless you. My wife quit cold turkey last May and she is much better for it. She asked me to put up a web site she says helped her greatly. Whyquit.com She says the best advice is to stay in the moment your in (which right now is a great moment Hail redskins) and don't think ahead.

Good luck guys and gals. I am putting together my weight set and exercise bike and getting a routine together that will help me lose the weight I have pledged!

Yeah, that was as short as the barber could take it without putting a blade to my scalp, which they won't do. At first she left me with a high and tight and I actually liked it but I had to tell her to cut it all off, she thought I was crazy.

All – Maybe some of you were kidding or never thought the Skins would get a whiff of the playoffs, but I was dead serious and feel we need to honor the Sports Gods should we beat Philly. I fully expect EVERYONE to honor their promises, and provide proof where promised. I have compiled a list of those promises that I deemed to be serious. Please let me know if I missed anyone and maybe we can all gather to follow through with our sacrifices…

But first things, fricking last… Lets beat Philly.

The official list of offerings to the sports gods:

Smoak -- Go to the game wearing only my underwear (Pants get worn into the game and socks/shoes are a must. I don't think I'd be allowed into FedEx wearing just my burgundy and gold thong. :)) -- Game must be at FedEx as I can NOT afford to travel. Six games in seven weeks has left me a little short on funds.

akh -- Gives up Jim Beam until first regular season game in '06

bwparker -- Will take dancing lessons and go out dancing with his fiancée

skinsfan811 -- won't wash Sean Taylor jersey until first regular season game in '06

hogs86 -- Breaks out bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue and assuming it is a home game, also in the stands with only underwear. (Maybe we can get seats together. :D)

jporterweb -- Gives up smoking post exit from playoffs until first game of '06 -- gives up smoking for good if Skins win Super Bowl.

redskin_rich -- Shaves head bald and provides pictures

Youngskin26 -- Changes HR screen name to "I'm a Little Teapot" (assuming mods approve)

skinfan43 -- Burns hat autographed Fred Smoot and Bruce Smith (wow that is sad? I could not burn anything with the Redskins logo on it)

keepramsey -- Another shaved bald head with pics and promises to support Brunell and never question Gibbs again

greatest2 -- Won't shave for a month from the day we get in (which would be Sunday if it happens)

fent -- Will allow akh and pgiddy to choose his attire for the draft party (worth coming just to see that)

dj_stouty -- Will man-scape all the hair from chest and back with pictures

BigGamer -- Will cry tears of joy

gibbswasgod -- Gives up smoking post exit from playoffs until first game of '06 -- gives up smoking for good if Skins win Super Bowl.

tbfoster1 -- quits smoking and adopts a Cambodian (???)

RedskinsVision -- Will shave cat in Spring?? -- (I won't ask?)

higgybaby -- Allows Spence to pick entire voting ticket in next national election

ryflan47 -- Will buy and burn a Giants jersey (May I suggest a used on off ebbay?)

RedskinsRyan -- Will not cut hair until May 19

bgforever -- Will go to the game rather than sell the tickets (not really a big sacrifice?)

helimech24 -- Another smoking promise - same as the others

Scotty Moyer -- Will buy 30-40 newspapers and cut out Skins/Playoffs articles just to hang them in the faces of Iggle fans everywhere

CowboyKilla -- No pornography for 1 year

BostonSkins -- Will vote "approve" for Brunell and stop hating him

joethefan -- Will buy akh a Pepsi at the draft party, but I still get a beer.

skins4life24 -- If the Skins go to the Super Bowl, will sell Jeep and buy ticket (pics included)

CNYSkinFan -- Promises to lose 25lbs by the start of next season

bantu - another shaved head

danny's stogie -- Will buy either a Skins blanket or flag and run around the neighborhood wearing only said item (and shoes) on a sub-zero day.

I technically lived up to my promise 2 days BEFORE we made the playoffs by dancing all night long at a wedding, instead of my usual watch, drink and pop in for slow-dances. I was on the dance floor all night long. She's satisfied that I've completed my end of the arrangement, but I figured I'll take her out again for every playoffs game we win.

I originally said lessons if we get a home game, but thats not possible now(right?) so I'll modify that to lessons if we win the SB.

so far so good for me. I can't prove it but I can tell you I had a miserable night last night. I tossed and turned, had to get up every two hours to use the bathroom because of all the water I drank during the day and I sweated up my sheets so bad I had to change them in the middle of the night.

01-03-2006, 11:34 AM
So I just had lunch with my wife and we were talking about the game this weekend and how losing it would all but seal our playoff hopes. Then, out of frustration around the fact that we're sitting at 5-5, I said "If the Redskins make the playoffs, I'll gladly go to the game in my underwear."* She then told me that she would hold me to that and it reminded me of the Niners game. A certain nameless HR member promised to strip down for the drunk lady in our section if the Skins scored 35 points. The assumption at the time was there is NO WAY possible our offense gets 35 points... Well, we got it by half time, and the rest is history... :D

So I thought I'd start a somewhat silly (somewhat serious) thread to have people list what they would do if the Skins were to somehow do the impossible and make the playoffs. However, I have the following conditions:

1) You MUST fully intend to do whatever you post.

2) It should not be something you would normally do any way.

This is a pact with the sports gods so don't get and try to out-think this one. You can't say "If the Skins make the Playoffs, I'll drink a six pack of beer"... I guess unless you never drink beer?

*My promise to the sports gods assumes the game is a home game as I can not afford to travel for the game.

LOL! I did add the disclaimer that it had to be a home game only because of the financial considerations. I have quit smoking, and I am a nervous wreck right now. Chewing the hell out of gum and hard candy. But I took Axe's advice and I am doing it cold turkey, instead of messing with the patch or gum, which has never worked for me. I even put a reminder as my sig. to myself.

BTW smoak, I want you to change me on that list that I will quit forever because we made the playoffs. This is going to be a one time deal, and I am not going back when next season starts.

For Motivation I suggest that you download the tool offered up by Daryl,

Do the math:if you smoke today,it will take you twice as long to get back to this very spot that you're at now.

See, to mee that would be fair... but the key phrase is "all HR events".

It would rock if we had a lifesize Dan Snyder cutout so that if we ever fall back in the standings early we can have a "Major League" type speech.... Then again, I do not want to see Danny in a thong.

I am really proud of you my friend and I hope to buy you a drink should we both make it to Baltimore. Hang in there! You'll be glad you did once you are through the tough part.

I forgot to mention......

You might want to disassociate yourself from smoker's for a little while.
Especially family/friends that smoke,if possible.
They tend to sabotage you, because they aren't quiting[either by choice or because they're afraid to really try].
You see,misery loves company.

I didn't even tell them I was quiting,I just told them that I couldn't hang out because I was busy.
Sometimes, you have to worry about yourself first, even if you have to lie.
They'll understand later,after you've quit.
When you're comfortable with your situation, hang out.

It's all about you,not anyone else.

They didn't buy all your smokes, pay your health care,or talked you out of smoking,so it's all about you!

We all have to have goals, and some take longer than others. It might not take that long depending on how much you drink a day. My wife drinks about 6 Diet Cokes a day until I stopped her and cut it back. We save about 10-20 dollars a week.

That was the thing for me. The more people tell me to do something -- or in this case to NOT do something -- the more likely I am to do the opposite. "Go to hell!", that's what I always say. There was no way I would quit if somebody told me to.

So, at one point when I had gone about 6 months without anybody actually giving me crap about it, I just didn't go out and buy more cigarettes. I didn't tell anybody, I just stopped smoking. I did chew about 4 or 5 pieces of the nicorette over the period of a month or so, but it was pretty much cold turkey other than than. The funniest part was that it took my wife 2 months to realize that I hadn't been smoking since I always avoided her when I did, lol.

Quitting smoking is the hardest thing I ever did. I smoked for 10 years...and quit (cold turkey) 5 years ago. The first week is the hardest. You literally shiver while you sleep, just like a junkie coming down off crack.

But after a while, your mind starts telling you how vile cigs are, and you actually start believing it.

I found that hanging out with smokers actually helped, rather than staying away from them. It helps in the will-power.

The hardest part is not smoking while drinking in a bar or outside. That still bugs me a tiny bit.

Anyway...5 years later, and I think I've saved around $6,000. Think about the type of vacation you and your loved one can have in 5 years!

Excellent! Glad it helps, it REALLY helped me during that crucial and painful first week. You can even program it to pop up Milestones for you if you like, it will pop up with a window saying Congratulations! You've made it 2 days!! or Congratulations! You have saved $50!!

A couple things that helped me a lot was Extra chewing gum. Peppermint and ( damn I can't remember the flavor now something like Frosty Ice, kind of a light metallic turqoiuse and white package). Another that helped a lot was sunflower seeds. It helps occupy the hand to mouth absence as well. I sat at the computer or in front of the TV plowing through bags of David's seeds.

The third and most important thing that help me quit was I stayed the hell away from other smokers and didn't drink for a couple of months. I was a pack a day smoker but if I went out drinkin' with the boys, it turned into two packs. Try to stay off the hooch for a while, at least the first week or two to avoid any stonger cravings and any stupid, impaired judgement decisions like 'one won't hurt'.

I know, easy for me to say, but trust me hoss I've been there. Keep doing what you're doing, count it an hour at atime if you have to, and keep posting here. You've got a lot of people here to give you moral support.

So what is it? 2 days now? KEEP IT UP!!!!

Thanks for that post Syphy! My girlfriend just quit on New Year's, and I forwarded all that info to her to help out! i quit LAST New Year's, and haven't had a single DRAG of a cigarette in over a year!

To anyone reading this...YOU CAN MOST DEFINITELY DO IT!! Use/get as much help as you can, every little bit helps - it feels SO GREAT to not be shackled by cigarettes anymore. Your entire LIFE will transform:)

BNG, then what's your excuse to avoid her NOW?;)

Hang in there dude, you're on to something wonderful and new I suppose. I made no resolutions, but have already started the next phase of quitting. The first was to admit you have a problem and have a plan. I am at the planning stages and having a person also do it, makes it easier I suppose when its time for a meeting. How long are you going to worry about cigarettes controlling your life?
You're done with them, now move on.

The more that you worry about not smoking, the harder it will be.
Just like a failed old relationship....move on.
Quit dwelling on the past.
There are other things to do,places to go,and people to see.

They key part to all of this is that it's mental.
The withdrawls don't last, but your habits do.

The official list of offerings to the sports gods:

skinsfan811 -- won't wash Sean Taylor jersey until first regular season game in '06

hogs86 -- Breaks out bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue and assuming it is a home game, also in the stands with only underwear. (Maybe we can get seats together. :D) -- The JWB can still be passed around.

jporterweb -- Gives up smoking post exit from playoffs until first game of '06 -- gives up smoking for good if Skins win Super Bowl.

keepramsey -- Another shaved bald head with pics and promises to support Brunell and never question Gibbs again -- kr -- is the head bald? I've seen the support for Brunell.

greatest2 -- Won't shave for a month from the day we get in (which would be Sunday if it happens)

BigGamer -- Will cry tears of joy

gibbswasgod -- Gives up smoking post exit from playoffs until first game of '06 -- gives up smoking for good if Skins win Super Bowl.

So lets update the list. Who is still left to check in and live up to their promises. I removed the names I know of, but I have been busy at work (hard to tell) nad need everyone to keep us posted. Let me know and lets keep after everyone who owes a debt to the Sports Gods.

Way to go man! Closing in on a week!!! I had trouble sleeping a bit at first as well and don't be suprised if you have the occasional dream about smoking, I had them from time to time for up to about 6 months. The two toughest times for me were first waking up and driving. Extra sugar-free gum to the rescue!!

Just keep toughing it out man, you're past the worst of it now!! It won't be long before you wake up without that heavy lung/tight chest feeling, and the smell of smokers is absolutely repulsive. You'll be suprised by how someone who just came in from having a smoke smells. You'll pick up what a god awful stench permeates the room around them as they walk past, trailing that stream of dirty ashtray and burning chemicals smell, and think to yourself,"My god, I used to smell like THAT?". I don't mind the smell of smoke so much, it's what the smoker smells like that I find repulsive.

I have moments of weakness myself from time to time( btw, I quit 17 months ago today) hanging out at a bar with some friends and everyone blowing smoke everywhere. I'll wait till a friend finishes a butt and lean in to yell/whisper in their ear depending on the noise level and take a good a whiff and remember why I quit.

That reminds me! One thing you will notice is as a non-smoker is the chain reaction in a group of smokers. I was visiting a buddy down in Charlotte last Arpil and went out drinking with a bunch of our friends, being the only non-smoker I found it pretty funny to see the chain reaction. One guy's wife whips out her pack and lights up, within a few seconds the husband lights up, the guy across the table from them says, "good idea" and lights up, the guy next to him lights up and so on and so on. Pretty soon I'm in the midst of a large gathering of 18 or so people and they have all lit up within a matter of about 45 seconds or so of the original smoker. Just interesting to see the social dynamics of smoking as a former smoker hehe. This was also the point that I chose to go out on the patio to escape the voluminous death cloud they were blowing all over the place.

Some friends may razz ya a bit with comments like "noone likes a quitter", that may be true, but people like the smell of a smoker even less, and someone who constantly hacks and coughs up lung-butter every 30 seconds even more so.

Congrats for almsot going a week, and the other two or three of you guys who are quitting also (I say quitting and not trying to quit, because as Yoda said, "Do or do not, there is no try" :Padawan: ) congratulations to you guys too and keep it up!!! Wow, two fer one! Thanks Redskin_rich! Never looked at it that way. I can work with that one. Will do.

The smoking thing is a LIFE thing and owe that to me and my family at least.

Another note, somewhat OFF TOPIC. The Indianapolis game is going to be a big thing here. Gbbs has respect here for both NFL and NASCAR, as we do for Dungy. So I am gathering basic info already for the 2006 schedule, lodging, places to go, etc for Skins fans and will eventually post that here at HR. Just noticed Indy on the 2006 schedule. Just have to wait for details later in in April.

I started smelling people today, it was very interesting to say the least. I didn't realize that is what I smelled like. I too am not bothered by the actual smell of smoke....thats how I thought I would smell but after today I know I smelled like ass.

I had a bad night last night, couldn't sleep and had another bout with the cold sweats...again enough to have to change the sheets. I was dead all day until I was able to take a short nap.

Other than that, the cravings haven't been too bad. I sort of want one after I eat but I pop in some gum instead. I actually like that the gum kind of cleans up the teeth after eating. Its a plus.

My cravings are basically gone except for driving and after eating, but now I eat gum and I am satisfied. After the third day, I wasn't jittery or on nerves, though I still go off the deep end with my wife. But I am getting better, and I was in a pretty good mood today. Thanks everyone for your support of us new ex-smokers. I want to personally thank you Axe because you were right about not wasting time on patches or gum, and I feel a lot better.

Good advice, don't trade one crutch for another. Most people who patch, lozenge or use the gum just end up replacing cigarettes with them, and they're even more expensive than smoking.

One week, one day down. How are the non-smokers doing so far? I am still chewing orbit gum like crazy, but the craving are mostly gone and I have stopped eating candy.

You guys rock. You guys are doing what most of this country can't. Do you guys give all of the credit to the Redskins?

Keep it up!

Its a plus.

You guys rule. Keep at it. After 11 days it gets a lot easier.

I give a lot of the credit to the Skins because I made this pact, but I also give a lot of credit to this board and to Axe for helping me with great advise. And to my family for helping me through this. The Redskins helped me start it, and everyone else helped me stick with it.

shoot, I'm going to miss it, my damn sister is getting married on the 29th. Speaking of the draft party are they even going to have one if we don't have a first.

Haven't you heard, we are trading Lavar Arrington, Patrick Ramsey, Ladell Betts, a dozen footballs, a luxury box, and Redskin one to New Orleans for their #2 pick.

It's still living because our season is still alive.:awesomewo
As long as we're in the playoffs,we still owe the football gods.
Some have paid their debts, others have more long term goals and commitments.
I wanted to find out how everyones progress has been,and....
I don't want any bad mojo at this stage of the season.

It's alive because some of us are showing support for and giving advice to members who are taking on the monumental task of quitting smoking.

As for my weight losss, it starts at the end of the Redskin season since I have a sliding scale on what I need to lose. If the Redskins win today I have to lose 50 lbs instead of 25. I am planning with the wife about changing our routines to allow for less meals out of the house and more exercise time (currently I am on the go all the time). Which actually may mean less posts overall, but it will be the offseason so what the hell!!!!
