View Full Version : Get Rich Or Die Trying...
Who's actually seen it? Opinions?
Here is an interesting review from lmdb:
Another Petty Nihilist Hits the Jackpot, 15 November 2005
Author: Joel from Venice, CA
50 Cent is decidedly no mere circus performer; unlike him, circus performers possess real talent. Yet, while his musical talent is certainly nil, it would be a mistake to argue that he therefore altogether lacks talent. In fact, 50 - very much like the legions of other gangster rappers - possesses great talent: the talent of a virtuoso con artist. 50 is banking on a pandemic of cataclysmically cheapened tastes - in other words, on the very aesthetic decline that made these other blissfully unconscious con artists rich. This extraordinary, innate ability to identify and exploit today's mass degeneration of taste is a truly supreme talent - a talent reaching to the very depths of cynicism. 50's nihilistic celebration of the meaningless and absurd is, of course, very "postmodern," very fashionable. As such we'll doubtless continue to skip and whistle our way to oblivion. Yes, 50 Cent is a joke. Unfortunately, the joke is on us.
As for this "film", I for one believe that if something's not worth doing, it's not worth doing well. So just as it's impossible for me to get excited over a spectacular tattoo, a gold chain, or the latest cutting-edge developments in nose-piercing technology, I have trouble taking seriously anything having to do with 50 cent. He is a thug, a petty nihilist, and a symptom of cultural decline. Nothing more.
I am a black man, and 50 Cent in no way represents me or anyone I know. I think it's shameful the way he's plastered up all over town. What he represents is the worst that our culture has to offer.

Damn. That's a pretty brutal assessment. You know when the term "film" is referred to in quotes like that that it is not going to be a good piece for whoever is being reviewed.

I think it perpetuates and promotes a sterotype of violence. Also, there is more to life than being rich. Richness if measured in more ways than just money.

stay away from this movie, 50 cent sucks as a rapper and sucks even worse as an actor. Plus the story is ridiculous, its like some crappy attempt at being scarface or something.

Truer words have possibly never been spoken.
I have no interest in gangster rap and 50 cent (or whatever he is called) seems like a chup trying to sell an image. i wouldn't see this if I was paid to sit through it.

Well YoungSkin, tell us what positive virtues you see coming out of this movie and from fifty in general?
Personally I don't want my kids watching him on Leno bragging about how he has taken 9 bullets. I really don't want them saying "That's what I want to be when I grow up."
The title of the movie itself establishes a thought pattern where the only thing in the world that matters is money and to go to any length to get it.

Dude you live in Iowa. The only way your kids will take 9 bullets is if someone reloads four times. :D

Im not a 50 cent fan, though I listen to his music and stuff. All im saying is that this thread, even though it starts off by asking if anyone seen it, seems a little too biased against 50 cent. i mean, its a movie, guys. why dont we say stuff about scarface and all the other gun movies and stuff. this movie was meant to be a gun, violence type of thing. i thought this thread was gonna be a "how was the movie" type of discussion, but its just people, who havent seen the movie, bashing 50.

I refuse to spend my money on anything that has to do with 50 cent. His music is meaningless crap, and I'm tired of having to change the radio station when his songs come on.

:lol1: nice.
This movie looks a lot like the other rapper-turned-actor movies, and they've all been terrible. I don't plan on seeing it ever.

Did you guys hear that 50 performed at some New York City bazillionaire daughter's botmitspha? Made $500,000 too. Performing at botmitspha's? Now that really takes a Gangster.

50 cent is all about himself and money, undoubtedly. Don't have too much of a desire to see this movie putting more money in his pockets. His music isn't horrible but it does lack substance. All the great rappers always had substance. I've seen none from 50. Don't waste your money and to those who have kids, don't allow them to see it despite them maybe wanting to. It ain't worth it.

As awesome as "fifty" is, I don't think he took 9 bullets all at once either.
And we have 9mm and .38 specials west of the Mississippi too.
