"On the eve of the team’s first preseason practice, Spurrier announced Sunday that during minicamps and summer coaching sessions, the team instituted $10 fines to players who jumped offsides, committed other basic penalties, or fumbled. They’ll continue that during training camp at Redskin Park."

It ought to be worse for fumbles.

I hoped he would do something like this...I know its a drop in the bucket for these players but its a pride thing. Regardless of the amount.

I agree TexSkin, nobody wants to put money in the pot, it is not about the money it is about pride

I think it's a good idea. This team must focus on eliminating as many mistakes as possible. Off sides and false starts have killed this team. Focus on checmistry and reducing mental errors. On special teams, the biggest thing they can do to improve is total focus ion basic fundamentlas, blocking and tackling.

He also stated he'll have more officials watching the practices to catch those false starts and offsides. Sounds like a good plan to me.

Yes the $10 deal can be a motivating technique to make a player aware of doing those things but I really think the penalty should be more severe like maybe being put on the pine for a certain amount of time. That would hurt the team and of course you don't want to be the player to hurt the team.
Somewhat like former Coach Shotty used to do. The players were scared to jump offsides, line up in the neutral zone etc. He had some of the most disciplined teams in the league. That comes from not putting up with those kinds of things.
Former Coach Turner did not come down nearly as hard for infractions like Shotty did. I think Coach Spurrier is an inbetween of those two.

I agree. More attention to detail can't be bad.

Never to late to start a good thang!!! This will give the guys a chance to see how many mastakes each individual makes.

i love this idea. more discipline never hurts. spurrier has really stressed being a much smarter team this year, and its something that completely killed us last year, stupid mistakes and turnovers. even though these guys are millionaires, noone wants to just throw money away.....

The fact is, we NEED discipline. I don't agree with the "more discipline never hurts" i subscribe to the fact that we totally lack discipline. All I know is I am sick and tired of watching DLineman jump off sides and keep offensive drives for the opposition alive. I am sick of false starts and hopefully with guys like Thomas and Fiore in there, that will be cut down drastically. Fact is, putting in a fine liek this shows the change in focus this camp. Spurrier can't stand mistakes like that and looks like he will emphasize structured play, disicplined approaches.

:Offtopic: Just for a minute.
Can discipline be applied to typing as well? If so, Mark you owe us $10 for every mistyped word from now on. :D

Hmm...writing those $10 dollar checks will be annoying if a player starts racking them up...

Yes, 'more discipline never hurts' definitely applies to typing. That's what I really meant in the first place... I think.
