View Full Version : GW actually glad Skins have to win in Philly

In an interview in the Comcast postgame show, Gregg Williams took the position that he is actually glad that the Skins would not be able to clinch a playoff berth this week and now most certainly would have to win in Philly next Sunday to get in.

Since Dallas is a virtue lock against the Rams, the Skins must get to 10 wins to make the playoffs (regardless of what the Vikings do). So, anything other than a win in Philly would end the Skins season.

While GW's position at first blush seems a foolhardy one, it bears closer scrutiny. He said that the Skins haven't accomplished anything yet to deserve a week "off". He would rather have the Skins on a roll going into the playoffs than playing a meaningless game before that and risk losing momentum. I think he is also saying that he wants the Skins to go into the playoffs through the front door with pride and confidence, rather than sneaking in through the back door with help from other teams. If there is one thing GW is not, he is not a shrinking violet. Hopefully the players will adopt GW's aggressive and confident demeanor as their own.

Well thats definetley a competative way of looking at it. I myself as a fan would rather have it be a lock going into next week. However to do any damage in the playoffs i think GW has a point.

I too see his point, and it's a good one. Still, I just want the Burgundy & Gold locked in ASAP because I feel that this team has come a LONG way from week 8, and our guys can take out ANYBODY in the NFC if we're healthy. Making the playoffs means having a whole new season, and I just want to get there!

HanburgerBum brings a solid point! Our Beloved Team still has their fate in their own hands!
Coach Willaims is pulling no punches...
I want to see our Beloved Team go into the "Stink" and lay a whoopin on the "iggles"......

Thanks HanburgerBum, I was about to create this very thread.

At first, I, too, was a little confused about his comments. But he made a very good point. I don't want the Redskins to lose any momentum heading into next week or possible the playoffs. We need to keep the intensity level the same as it has been over the past month of December.

No let down now guys. Keep playing the way we have and it'll take care of itself.

They absolutely need to take care of business Sunday and I will be there to root them on baby!

The Washington Redskins all season seemed to be a team that could beat anyone and lose to anyone in the NFL. But all along I like that because you never want to peak too early. Where are the minds of the Colts going to be if they lose again before going into the playoffs.

We were dead in the water and the buzzrds were circling before the Redskins pulled off what is looking so far to be a miracle. Great job boys!

I wish Dallas had won but what can you do? Tampa Bay winning was actually a God send since a Tie would have been really weird. I wish Dallas played before us so we could scratch some injured players before gametime if they lost, but what can you do.

Think of it this way, how much fun will we have watching the St. Louis Dallas game knowing that we took away their playoff spot.

These Skins are playing as a team. Playing Gibbs ball meaning no turnovers and fewer penalties. They are peaking at the right time and heading to the playoffs.

A long way from 6-10 and how you build a winner.

Go Gibbs!

i look at like our "playoffs" started early. we have to maintain the intensity of a must-win mentality.

The Philly game means just as much as the New York or Dallas game, we have to win. It's even more important if New York loses because we could win the division. The Redskins still need to win the game with the emotion they did the other 2 games. If you keep the momentum coming into the playoffs, it helps drive the team to win.

How awesome would it be if the Redskins won the division, and then had a home game? I'd love to see the FedEx rocking atleast one more time this year!I wish Dallas had won but what can you do? Tampa Bay winning was actually a God send since a Tie would have been really weird. I wish Dallas played before us so we could scratch some injured players before gametime if they lost, but what can you do.
Ah, the truth comes out, huh? ;) j/k Dustin...

Gregg Williams and the Defense wouldn't want it any other way. And neither do I. Four wins in a row still doesn't make up for the fact we went 2-6 before then. We must earn our right in the final week.

Well gang, its come down to this!! Redskins and Eagles. Wow, it should be a good one. I would love to have my Eagles win this one but I DON'T want the Cowgirls in the playoffs. So, gooooooo SKINS!! Only thing I ask is that its a good close game with no injuries. It doesn't manner so much for the Eagles but the Skins need everyone for the playoffs.

Now ya see, I said it and don't feel sick as opposed to some of the Skins fans that felt dirty when they cheered for the Eagles to beat the Cowgirls and Gints.

Now get the job done but be gentle please........:lol1:

Good way of looking at GW. No shrinking violet. Teams that beat other teams on the road consistently, must have a mindset that they must be on top of their game, but more importantly want it more. If they are at home, there is a tendancy for some, if not all, the players to let up a little, especially some folks you wouldn't think would do it, its just natural, from being comfortable.

An announcer the other day, or this morning, mentioned that Hasselbeck is constantly moving around, almost figgety, nervous like, highly motivated EVERY game. A quality seen in sports megastars,Baugh, Namath, Unitas, Montana, Starr. It keeps his team focused and on the road, they are as devastating as much as they are at home.

GW knows what the team needs and he doesn't want them to be laid back at all. He won't let it. Thank goodness!

This is a good thread and GW is correct.

All the fans here know that we have a good team.
We can beat anyone at anytime.
Our problem is that we haven't been able to close games out.
That is..... until now.
I think that we're peaking at the right time, and we're a team that nobody should want to play.
Having said that, the only thing missing is R-E-S-P-E-C-T and we'll only earn it by continuing to win and by beating the best.
Hail To The Redskins!!!

This is going to be a great litmus test since most likely all of our playoff games (should we win on sunday) will be on the road. No place more hostile than Philly. Let's win this one...then we have a full head of steam come playoff time.

There is a part of me that would like to have sewn it up last week so depending on the Giants Oakland game we could rest some injured players, but there is something to keeping momentum.

So BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!

We are playing our best football of the season, these last two weeks, why would anyone want a meaningless, momentum-killing game. Also, we haven't swept Philly in 15 years, we need to go up into Philly with the pedal on the floor, no let up.

I think GW is right and he knows this team better than any of us. I hope we don't lose him next year.

What GW has to weigh is the next two years of his family once again going through adjustments so quickly, with so much, and so little time, with someone still in school (high school too!).

Jumping around over the next 24 months too often takes a toll on the kids (I don't want to get too deep in discussion of HOW this is starting to impact these young people with parents making them move for what THEY want and not getting inside their kids heads to understand WHAT they need and want).

He had a BLUNT display of that from another coach. The truth is, stability breads success, and the other fact is, how much patience does a city, organization have, if they let your predecessor go in 2 yrs. If you are slower than you thought, does that mean they will do the same to you. NOW, go back to the paragraph about jumping around and how much are you REALLY in touch with your kids. Has anyone talked to the kids of the many coaches who bounced around for 10 yrs with 4 -5 different teams. You only see and talk to the ones that are still in Pittsburgh, Houston, Seattle, NE, etc., mainly as a national scene.

this man has been with the Skins 2 years and even though a SCENE will LOOK good doesnt' mean its so. KC wanting Vermiel out is shooting themselves in the foot. Indy was wise to wait 1 more yr with Dungy, Houston's a project, and if they can't wait 4 years, forget it. St. Louis' offense will start looking at AARP next season, because the replacements aren't anywhere near what once was (be for real!).

Truth is, GW will be in charge if he left, but he'd be that much further off from seeing a really competitive complete team. The one thing that hurt him Buffalo. If his ego says he has to have his name on it , then go and good luck. But if he wants a SB ring to marry up his career with BEING IN FULL charge, then be patient, wise and the benefits will be not only on the field but in so many places he can't count them. His choice, but really there isn't a crystal ball needed here.

God, I hope GW is back next year. I like his attitude, he is a coach and treats his players the way coaches should. He's got that old high school coach mentality. I didn't like his decision on LaVar early on, but I don't think that any of us will ever understand exactly what was going on at practice and what not. Lavar might not have been ready and healthy as we think.
