damn...i m really worried about the D line now. i hope something is in the works with a replacement......

Same here. A backup plan better be in place. And when I say "backup" plan, I don't mean use lifetime backups, either.

I say Good Riddance...I think Haley can step in and be his replacement. I mean they gave him the option to still make all his money and he turns it down? He's STUPID! He doesn't deserve a contract. He isn't going to get near that much anywhere else. I'm not saying he won't be missed, but they need that money for Champ, and if he isn't willing to take a cut from being the highest paid player this year when he obviously DOES NOT deserve it then I say he does not deserve to play for this team. They weren't asking for much, just a different way to make his money....

Although I am a bit worried about the Middle Run stopping ability of our D now... I have to agee. The Redskins were still offering BD the same money, just in incentive packages that would cause him to actually DESERVE it! He showed that he wasn't into working hard and wanted his money upfront and guaranteed.
Now... can we please sign Champ?

Seems he hasn't changed much from his cincinatti days. Hey, there's a thought-maybe Marvin will pick him up and rejoin him with Powell. I'm sure the fans at cincinatti would love to see big daddy back after all those kind words he had for them.

If management didn't back it up, with the likes of Big Daddy... no player would ever take them seriously again. HERE! HERE! FOR MANAGEMENT TOEING THE LINE.

Glad the FO stood their ground and didn't "punk out". Good. Maybe they know something that we don't (in reference to who they may be pursuing). My compass is pointing towards Chicago for some reason.:p

I hope they don't get desperate and trade a draft pick for some run of the mill player.

After reading that ESPN article, I feel a little better. Seems big daddy wasn't that great against the run after all. Although, with him out, Gardener was still in, so those numbers could be a little inflated.

Yeah, but BIG DADDY had one thing going for him... he was BIG. That alone will hurt a bit.

07-29-2003, 02:09 PM
Uh, I don't like the situation at all at DT. At all. I understand the FO's position and it seemed like Big Daddy should have complied, but all that really matters is that we have a very substandard middle of the line. No one wants Champ signed more than I, but we've gotta use some of this additional cap space to replace Wilkinson. I wanna try to make a run this year and we won't be able to do so with the D Linemen on the roster now. I just don't see it. Optimism of some youngsters playing above their head is not good enough.

i agree with cutting him, just hope there is a backup plan. the guy was being selfish and now he isnt going to even sniff half of what he coulda been making here. but here we go again, giving up dead money in the future for a bum.....

this has nothing to do with the dt situation, but maybe our line would improve with a solid de. akbar gbaja-biamila(kabeer's brother) is an undrafted rookie. maybe we could sign him for the minimum?

Chicago is looking for a running back . . . how about Kenny Watson for Ted Washington? Watson would probably get cut anyway . . . so might Washington, sounds like a good fit to me. Though Washington would probably cost too much and have to have his contract restructured.

Hmmmm.
Don't know what to think here. I am glad the FO stood the ground, his played did not justify a $3.5 million output. However, this is the one position that needed addressed the mos via Draft and was not. Think about this. Haley goes down to injury, then what? I am with many of you though, as much bashing as we have all done about Vinny Cerrato, in all essence, he has made the right moves this year and I have to think there is a plan in place.

I totally agree...In the last three years the guy had 48 tackles in 46 games...One tackle a game? Not to mention he averaged only one sack every 6 games...That is not good, and certainly not worth the money he was being paid.
See ya Big Daddy.
Now....let's sign Champ.

The Skins have brought in Haley, Noble, Upshaw, Zellner, Bowen and Molden as defensive free agents. All had more tackles last year than Wilkinson. All except for Noble had more sacks. DL Holsey, Jackson, Cowsette and others had more sacks than Dan.

I agree Cam. My problem though is not with depth, it is with a durable starter.

Because of prorated signing bonus segments, the team will be charged $3.94 million in "dead money" for Wilkinson in 2004.
God. Damnit. Nothing pisses me off more than to see year after year of ridiculous dead cap space numbers for the Skins. It never ends.
We just lost our best DT, but that's not saying much. Now we have to hope that either we get lucky and manage to grab a half-decent DT cut from some other team, or Haley fills the hole better than expected.
Interesting thought about trading Watson. I doubt Chicago would send Washington for him, but there are a few other teams looking for a running back, too. Houston, Tampa Bay, and New England come to mind.

Good Riddance! Who underachieved the most? Big D or Stubby. How many times have we seen The Cowboys and their O-line run the ball down their throats. I wish we would have resigned Carl Powell. He seemed to always give a good effort.

Agreed. Good riddance, although he may just come back. I think Stubby was the bigger flop, but Wilkinson was that far behind.

One article made a very good point that our DL run defense cant get much worse. I support the "business" side of this move. It sounds like we may very well sign him before long for less.

Welcome to hR OUskinsfan.
Correct me if i'm wrong about this but wasn't it BDs responsibility to take up bodies and let our LBers make the plays? Isn't that the primary principle in Lewis' defense? Cant remember but that may be the reason for his low #s last year.
Either way, if it helps up resign Champ, I'm game...

He had 17 tackles last year.... What did we loose ? Our Best DT then we are really in trouble... Noble is twice the player and Wynn can play DT in a pinch so for all of you Wilkenson fans sorry

We have plenty of money to sign him....it's just Snyder...when he's ready to open the checkbook, he'll open it.

Basically that is what Cerrato said as well, I believe his actual comment. Snyder will get to it when he is ready to make the deal.

Although it would mean yet another new scheme, and I know it won't happen, this makes a shift to a 3-4 defense sound even better.

Holy crap I had to go away for a day and look what happens. Kudos to the FO for standing thier ground. AS everyone is saying sign Champ. Remember guys Gardener was a late pick up last year too so maybe we will find another gem

I would love to see the 'skins go to a 3-4, not this year, too late. Would have to start as early in the off season as possible. I'd rather have an extra LB in there with speed.

I agree, put Arrington, Trotter, Mitchell and Jesse on the field togehter and they would be very good, only problem is Jesse and Mitchell are not real young anymore

I don't know about a 3-4, we need to get a BIG DT for the middle

I still believe the Skins are waiting for the Raiders to finish Woodson's contract so they can offer a similar contract.

I think your right. And I think that is also why Champ is gently pushing to do the deal before. *lol*

Yeah Redbeard, him and his agent know that Snyder usually is the one to set the market not the other way around. If they offer him a similar contract to Woodson's they wont have much leverage because Champ is considerd equal to him. Although I like Champ better for obvious reasons. :)

Picking up DT-Rien Long, would be looking like a pretty smart move about now. I wonder if BDW would have balked at all. Anyone know what happened to this guy & why the Redskins didn't give him a sniff. I know he had a record of injuries, was considered more of a penatrater than run-stopper, & built more light-fast side. Did we want more run-stopping? Or bigger?
Skins57
07-30-2003, 09:30 AM
I guess we had Dockery higher up than Long on the draft board and it sounds like Dockery was a very good pick but lets wait till he plays some

We have some pretty decent backups at LB as well in Lemar Marshall and my fav Antonio Pierce. 3-4 could work, but is Noble big enough to handle the middle?

Who knows... Big Daddy might not find what he's looking for and come back. Does anybody believe that could be a strong possibility?

DT Rien Long got drafted by the Titans in the 4th round, and all indications are that he is going to make the team. so the redskins would be forced to try and trade for him. which would be risky considering his possible attitude problems and questionable work ethic. At any rate doesn't seem like he could serve as much more than a backup this season.

what about rashad moore? he was drafted in the 6th round by seattle, who just recently aquired norman hand in a trade with New orleans. he's quick and can tackle well

Noble is a perfect NT for the 3-4. A NT sole job in that defense is to occupy two OL so the LBs are free to make the plays. That is what Noble does best. Size is overrated sometimes as 273 lbs- D. Kragen of the '95-'98 Carolina Panthers was probably one of the best 3-4 NTs.

I like the Dockery pick. He was a great value & moderate need. But it's not like we couldn't have kept Alex S, lived without Dockery and gone for a value DT who slipped a couple rounds.
Guinness4health: I agree, I wouldn't trade for him, either. I do wonder "what if" we'd drafted him though. Wow, was he that bad of an attitude? (At one point he was considered top15)

Didn't I read somewhere that Big D fired his agent on Friday?
Maybe Dan wasn't happy with the way the guy was negotiating, perhaps he was willing but the agent was giving him bad advice?
Naaaa...I bet he could've done what he wanted to do, he was just greedy!
How does this work, him coming back? If he were to come back.
