Look at this quote and tell if you get out of it the same feeling i do, that SS is high on Betts,. He says BUT, Ladell and Ladell again. Throws in Watson, but just seems quick to point out Betts.
Q: How much are Trung Canidate and Chad Morton going to help this season?
A: They're both going to help. Ladell Betts is a good back too. Kenny Watson. It's going to be tough to figure out who we're going to play right there to tell you the truth because they're all doing well. Certainly Trung and Chad have some speed, but Ladell is a pretty fast player as well, and Kenny. They're all good backs. We're sort of overloaded at that position right now

I felt the same way[scary!]. It looks like Watson will have to really work hard to make the game day roster.

Plus I keep remembering that Stephen davis interview where he said and gave huge props to Betts and that he had the stuff and potential to be very good.

All I ask is that it be a fair compitition.

Makes me feel good. Playing well, competition, overloaded.. those are great "problems" for a coach. Competition makes you work harder and want it more. I think we've seen from Spurrier, he plays no favorites. Players have to earn a spot and playing time. Whoever dose not make it will have good trade value or maybe Spurrier is talking himself into keeping them all. I hope we're overloaded at a few more positions!
btw Kenny Watson could be the 2nd coming of Brian Mitchell- PR, KR, coverage etc.

The preseason games will tell me more about the competition.

Sounds like your coming over to the right side on this thing. I've been a big Betts guy the entire offseason. Its time for him to make me look good and dust the competition in camp. I just think he's capable of being a very well rounded producer at the tailback spot. We shall see.

My friend I have been Betts/Watson all along. I oppossed the Trung trade simply because Betts/Watson played well enough in my mind lastseason to do the job. Betts improved steadily last year as the season progressed

I got out of that the feeling that SS sees Watson as an afterthought....he didn't say anything at all about him, just sort of mentioned his name...

I can not see Watson here this year, maybe he will be traded for a pick or something. I hope SS didn't hear Davis endorse Betts, we all know how SS liked Davis style of running

I still think Canidate will win the starting job as SOS will want that home run ability in the game more often than not. I expect Betts to play quite a bit as well. Just not as much as Trung.

IMHO - you need a "feature" running back - regardless of the fact that Coach runs the "Fun 'N' Gun" - last years stats support the fact that there was a balanced passing/ running game.

I agee..here is to hoping that Trung proves to be that back. He just seems a perfect fit for what Spurrier wants.

I hope that trung works out also, He showed some signs his rookie year of being a dangerous back so lets hope he can continue that

I dunno if i agree with the need of a feature back. If a committeee of Trung, Morton and Betts do the job, run well, catch well, then you are keeping defense at bay on what and who will be in on each play. A feature back is the normal, safe thing to do in history, but thinking out of the box, when you have three or four good backs, not great, but good, they are all pretty close in as far as style and performance, a couple of good backs can turn in to a great backfield. So i dont buy the notion that we NEED that one feature back, that one main back.

I disagree with one comment you make. If all your backs are pretty close in style, speed and performance then I don't see how you are keeping defenses at bay. Normally teams would have that change of pace type of back; a speed guy and a bruiser type guy.

This committee approach vs. featured back sounds like the right thing to do given that none of these guys have a history of NFL production. My concern with the spread the wealth philosophy at tailback is that one person needs to be the guy in the clutch when the game is on the line. One guy has to develop thick skin to be able to deliver that big 3 yds on a crucial 3rd and 2 in the 4th. I question whether any one of these guys can get into a rhythym as well with this platooning thing.
