View Full Version : Our best road performance to date?

I'm looking for reasons to feel confident about Saturday and I'm trying to think of the most complete game the Skins have played away from Washington this season. TB was the biggest win, but you can't really call that well-rounded. Dallas was the most exciting and, for obvious reason, the sweetest, but the Skins pretty well got man-handled for most of it. I guess it would have to be the first TB game? Or maybe Kansas City, where we outplayed the Chiefs but turned it over a lot?

St. Louis was our best road victory this year. Rock and Portis had over 200+ yeards rushing and the D clamped down on the rams. Plus it sparked the 6 game win streak we are on.
That was the best road performance.

I'd say St. Louis. We won, 1st key ingredient. We dominated on both sides of the ball and ran up over 200 yards of rushing. It was in a loud dome stadium, we shut down a good offense and we outgained them 407 to 191. No turnovers and we forced 2 (1 INT and 1 Fumble).
Only 1 negative play and that was prevented from being an even worse negative play thanks to the heads-up play of our QB.

i'm going to disagree with you on this one, sean. that place was deathly silent this year, especially for that game. i agree with the rest of the assessment, though.

Definitely St. Louis. Denver is second IMO. the D gave up long runs, but I felt the field conditions and no LaVar contributed to that.

The Rams were awful this year. By the time you guys played them, their coach was gone, the team in disarray and disenchanted. As were the fans. I don't know enough about your other games to comment further, but don't hang your hat too much on beating the Rams. The 49ers DID sweep them this season.

As Hawks shouldn't be hanging their hats too much on beating the Rams twice, the Cards twice, the 49ers twice, Houston and Tennessee..

No one is hanging their hat on the win, the question was our most complete road game played this year.
The only win I will hang my hat on is the 20-17 win in week 4. Until we play again on Saturday, the scoreboard reads 1-0.

I'm not hanging my hat on that at all. You don't have to try to turn everything around. Why are you so defensive?

Boy, I might have to go with Denver, I forgot the stats were so lopsided:
yards 447-257 - Wash.
first downs 28-11 - Wash.
Washington T.O.P - 33:49

Denver and KC were two very good performances against two very good teams. Maybe even better than the Seahawks and in two tougher places to play in than Seattle.

Actually your assessment is inaccurate.
The team was not in disarray. They were still fighting for a playoff spot and the team was encouraged by a win in the previous week and all the hype leading up to our game with them was about their Harvard QB. Both teams were 5-6 entering the game and both still alive for the playoffs.
Fent, you are wrong my man. The place was loud. We killed the noise by Laying the Smack down.
The team went in a downward spiral after we took it to them, not before.

I just don't think a loss can be a good road performance, so my choices I guess are Tampa (the playoff win), Philadelphia, Dallas, St. Louis, & AZ.
So I would rank it like this:
St. Louis
Philadelphia
Dallas
Tampa
AZ

The Denver game....
Brunell threw for over 300 yards with 2 TDS...Portis topped 100 yards, despite the Broncos fanbase saying it could never happen...and Moss, Patten and Cooley all had 7 or more catches....despite the ball being thrown to 8 different receivers.
It was 2-3 huge running plays that the defense gave up that lost the game for the Skins. Aside from that, Plummer was a paltry 10 of 25 for less than 100 yards.

The KC and Denver games were games that I think we must had won. St Louis is just a bad team, Dallas outplayed us most of the game and Philly outplayed us the first half and the team is worse than Denver and KC. I get your point but despite the loss, I'm going with those two first.

I know what you mean, I guess for the purpose of the thread I was looking for overal play, regardless of outcome. Certainly we lost at TB but won at Dallas, but it would be tough to say the Skins played better in Texas.

Actually I would rank the play of the Redskins against Dallas better then the loss in TB. We had so many mental and ohysical mistakes against TB that I can't say that was a great win.

It was against Dallas. We go into the most hostile environemnt imagineable for any Redskin. Going against a team that has basically owned us for many years. Against a coach who has a history of beating our coach. We get basically beatdown for almost 4 quarters by a good football team; and yet we somehow manage to pull out the win. The skins showed immense heart, guts, and a never say die attitude that would serve them well later in the season when they were staring at a 5-6 record.
To pull out a win against all odds and all oddsmakers showed the character and grit of this team. And that more than any stat, any number of points, shows the true mettle of what it takes to become a champion.
When Joe Gibbs says it was his greatest moment in sports, then I think you have to say it was quite the performance.

I FEEL it!!!! The defense is playing at as high a level as it has all season and the offense is ready to break out against the weak (and small up front) seattle defense. Plus, it's the second round of the playoffs! Of course this is going to be our biggest road win this year!!!!!

How about the fact that we beat them already, and we didn't have LaVar Arrington last time. Not good enough? Ok, then think about the games we played against the 49ers, Cardinals, and Rams. Three wins where we either ran away with it or dominated on defense. They played each of those teams twice. Ask yourself, if they had of played three good teams, instead of lofting along under the weakness of their division, would they still have 13 wins, or just ten... like us.
You want the ultimate stat? You want to know how we ensure victory? Under Gibbs, whenever the team Rushes for 150+ yards, wins the turnover battle, and wins the time of posession, the Redskins are undefeated. Something like 45-0.

Wow, I don't remember him saying that.
I remember him saying it in the locker room and press conference, because the next day he was blasted on Jim Rome is Bruning. Citing that the Nascar wins and Superbowl wins are much more important than beating dallas on monday night in week two.
The quote I remember was on the field postgame where Jerry Jones said that it was the most painful defeat he can every remember. I find some small bit of joy in thinking about that.

My vote goes to Denver.
That place is consistently considered one of the most difficult places to play in the league, and we went there and whooped their tail up and down the field. Granted, we came up a little short, but our offense played, arguably, its best game yet in a very hostile environment.

I concur, it was a good game of football all around. Plus on top of being at mile high and the crowd, i might be wrong but wasn't it raining or something. I remember not being that bummed that we lost cause it was such a good game, even broncos fans were coming on the board saying how good of a game it was.

It was pouring in Denver...which was great to watch Plummer throw for less than 100 yards, while Brunell threw for 300+ with 2 TDS and 0 INTs.
Goes to show that Brunell could be very effective in Seattle if it starts to rain.

I was in a bar and can not comment to the noise level, but St. Louis was absolutely in it. The loser of the game was not mathmatically eliminated (to my knowledge), but we all knew the loser was basically out. The same with the dallass game.

I'm not sure...but here are some interesting Hasselbeck stat nuggets:
(Of course, I'm pulling only the bad stats on the guy...but at least I'm honest! ;))
Hasselbeck threw 7 of his 9 INTS at home this season.
His season passer rating of 98.2 dipped to an average of 83.1 when facing NFC East teamsIv'e got nothing else on him....he seems to be a pretty complete QB this season...

He is a very good QB and it will come down to getting to him and forcing turnovers. We are in trouble if we don't do those two things.
I am so rabid for this game!

St. Louis was our best game because of what it started. We would be no where without that game. It put us back in the hunt when everyone counted us out. It started the 5-0 thread that was so popular on this board. It was the game that changed our season.

Agreed. Also we had no turnovers and we ran the ball well. That it what you need to do on the road to be successful.

Yeah, we didn't win in Denver but I thought our offense played it's best road game of the season. That was in the rain too and Seattle has a lot of rain. Maybe that's a good sign.

Nuff said.
We COULD NOT LOSE A GAME from St. Louis till the end of the season. We WON OUT!
I don't give a crap if it was NO every week, we had to show up, play and finish.
We had to play in places that didn't want us to win - GET IT! Yet we did. They STILL HAD THE PLAYOFFS TO PLAY FOR, ONE TEAM NEEDED THE FREAKIN" DIV TITLE AND WE DIDNT GIVE IT TO THEM, ONE TEAM NEEDED TO STAY IN THE HUNT AND WE CREAMED THEM AND ONE TEAM THOUGH A LOSER IS THE ONE THAT MADE THE "HAWKS POOP IN THEIR PANTS< and that defense of the Eagles was as nasty, evil and mean as ever.
Now multiply the TB defense ten times that and there isn't a team in the NFL that would have had a good day that day. I GUARANTEE IT!
Stop discounting us! I can't wait till Sat.!

So I figure this is the best place to post this tidbit.
Doing some research on ESPN.com (and since it didn't go back far enough I used this site:http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/teams.nsf) , it looks like since Mike Holmgren has been in Seattle, the Seahawks are 1-6 comming off the bye week (with this years victory over the lowly Arizona cardinals serving as the lone win).
I went and checked out Mike Holmgren's record while he was at Green Bay as well, and even with Brett Favre in his hayday Mike only managed to go 5-4 comming off the bye week (that includes the 2 years that Green Bay went to the Super Bowl and had first round bye's).
That gives Holmgren an all time record of 6-10 comming off the bye week, and that isn't with poor teams, only twice in 14 years did any of his teams have a losing record. A lot of people around Seattle are worried about the players being a bit rusty, since they haven't played meaningful minutes in almost 3 weeks, and with Holmgrens track record of "preparing" his team after a layoff... well lets just say I am excited about the Skins prospects here :D
