as the terps were down 13-0, i laughed and said they needed to have their butt whooped for a few minutes so that they would begin to play with a sense of urgency. turns out i was right. :) congrats to gary williams......

Man, I went in the gym with UVa up by 11 and come out and it's tied. Then, I go in Home Depot and come out to hear Md up by 5!! Come on Wahoos!! That sucks.

I hope DJ is alright. He was talking so much smack before the game. He's probably face down alongside an empty bottle of Makers right about now. ;)

That was a dissapointment, to say the least. Those last 6 minutes were brutal...just brutal. I hope Keino manages to skip this thread, b/c we always talk smack before and after UVA/Twerp games. :banghead:

Well, the announcers got their wish; because it was a Twerps love-fest all night on Comcast.

Anyway...I'm looking forward to the rematch in March. It will be the final game played at University Hall, so I'm sure the atmosphere will be electric. Anyone want to do a roadtrip?

Congrats to Gary Williams, a guy I really respect.

Tough game for UVA after getting off to a fast start... But more importantly, what is a Wahoo?

I actually like Gary Williams, if that helps any. But a rivaly is a rivalry, so I'm bitter about the loss.

BTW - what was that dude thinking from MD who went for the double-dip reverse slam and missed it? I thought Gary was going to tear his head off for that! If anyone was happy the Terps ended up winning that game yesterday, it was him. You haven't led all game...you are all alone for an easy bucket...and you try to hot shot it for the ESPN highlight reel. lol

LMOA (although NOT a the time) ........... How incredibly STUPID was that. Mike Jones, who has really stepped it up since Chris McCray left. One thing for sure - I DON'T think we'll see him attempt that again this year. Other than Gary, Jones has got to be breathing the biggest sigh of releif today. MAN if MD had lost that game by 1 or 2 points last night - that kid wouldn't see playing time until next season.

Interesting. When I went for the UNC game, it seemed the crowd was more into the Wahoo thing than the "Cavaliers"... Aside from the mascot, I don't remember seeing really anything Cav related, but man the crowd was Wahoo-ing like a champ.

Interesting.

I thought Kenny was kidding but if not, the Wahoo name is explained by the school this way:

Legend has it that Washington and Lee baseball fans dubbed the Virginia players "Wahoos" during the fiercely contested rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890's. No doubt this was a reference to the carp of the same name found in the waters of Virginia which is capable of retaining a prodigious amount of liquid to increase its size and fend off enemies. By 1940 "Wahoos" was in general use around the grounds (campus).

I like the Kool and the Gang reason better though. :)

Yeah...I always thought it was a fish.

BTW - Is the rumor true that Dr. Seuss used Charlottesville and UVA as influences in him creating the "Hoos" and "Hooville" from The Grinch who Stole Christmas? I heard Dr. Seuss' house is/was on a hill in Charlottesville that overlooks the city similar to the view the Grinch had on Hoosville.

Well that is no fun! I like the rumor better than the truth.

BTW - Here is another explanation for the Wahoo name:

wahoo comes from "Wahoo-wa" which originated out of a song way back in the day that uva students caught on to and started singing @ football games. it is now found in the lyrics of a song called "the good old song" which we hoos sing at football games whenever uva scores, occasionally the pep band will play it at the end of a winnign lacrosse gam.e the cavaliers are our official mascot, but uva students for the most part refer to themselves as wahoos or hoos. and charlottesville is sometimes called "hooville." incidntally, the wahoo- is also a fish that is reputed to drink it's weight at night- no not an indian/native american.. haha, so a lot of people call themselves the wahoos for that reason- and there are some uva shirts that have a definition of wahoo- as a fish that can drink it's own weight..which is a feat many uva students aspire too :). this multiple name business is a source of great confusion to a lot of people. uva teams are called the cavaliers, cavs, hoos, wahoos..it's all the same thing. "go hoos" is probably the most popular slogan for our athletic teams though.. glad to help clear it up...

Actually, they did play this song alot back when I was a kid in the Richmond area (especially during the Ralph sampson era), and I believe because it did have that Wahoo reference to it. I never knew that story about the fish.

Don't feel bad Kenny, I have been an avid fisherman in VA for 25 years and I have never heard of or seen this "Wahoo" carp that was described.
