There is a thread on terptown.com that the Jets will trade Abraham to SD for Phillip Rivers. I have no confirmation, but this trade would make sense for the Jets, not sure so for the Chargers.

I think Dino Costas website was the source.
I would rather keep Abe and go after Schaub or someone similiar with a draft pick as bait though we would have to do some serious cap work. There is also the slight chance Pennington makes it back.

Why would SD go after a speed rushing 4-3 DE in Abraham when they already have a speed rushing 3-4 LB in Merriman? Also, why would they trade away Rivers when Brees might not even play next season? This rumor doesn't make sense for SD and reaks of something started by Jets fans.

Before anyone starts citing us as a source for this too, I will say there is NOTHING but speculation online regarding this story.

Thank you Dave. I've added a questionmark to the thread title.

San Diego should jump for joy if this happens. Man, the Jets are the most screwed up organization in the league. The Cardinals look like the Poster Boys for the NFL compared to the Jets.

this makes no sense for the chargers...Abraham i guess would well in the outside linebacker spot, but merriman got rookie of the year and foley had 10 sacks last year....

If they wanna deal Rivers, they ought to go for a position they really need. Rivers really needs a shot to show what he can do in this league. Heck, Roethlisberger has already won a super bowl.

This would make a whole lot more sense if it was for Vilma, and this even got discussed earlier this year around trade deadline time...Or maybe Mccareins...

They are going to have to give up something and I doubt it would be Vilma. He is already one of the best linebackers in the afc. Oh well, there's always Pennington.

this is the reasoning I had on another thread, that Pennington would go to someone. I guessed Dallas, if this report is true about Abraham. Dallas desperately needs a proven QB for what is sure to be Bledsoe's most likely last season and Henson is nothing but camp fodder. My guess is they are likely to give up a secondary player (we pulled their pants down, not once, but TWICE and Parcells' is still smarting from that). Likely a Roy Williams (he's overrated anyway) for Pennington.

The Jets would have to give up their 1st round draft pick, at the least, to get Rivers. San Diego is not going to trade him away for a player that they don't need and is not under any contract.
Furthermore, no one is going to make any deals with the new kid running the Jets, unless they are tilted heavily in their favor.

This is my feeling also. If they get rid of Rivers, they lose any kinda insurance for Brees. I think if Rivers goes, it will be late in FA.

Jets need a QB, We need a DE, Ramsey was a 1st Round Pick. Sounds more likely than the Rivers trade.

I guess we will see - my bet is that the Abraham for Rivers trade has been informally been agreed upon.

Why would you think that? Because a few message boards are saying so? If that were the case, then you might want to put your order in for your Redskins jersey with TO's name on it, lol.

Because it makes sense for the Jets - they need a QB. Brian Schottenheimer was recently named the Jets offensive coordinator and is installing an offensive system that is similar in design to the Chargers current system - a system that Rivers is familiar with.
Abraham will fit nicely into SD's 3-4 defense and , along with Shawne Merriman, gives SD a great pash rush.

It makes sense for the Jets but it does not make sense for Bolts. And Abraham is a 4-3 DE, not a 3-4 LB. He's too small to be a 3-4 DE and playing LB requires a skill set that Abraham currently lacks. If he goes anywhere, I think it will be to a 4-3 team.
BTW, just because it might make sense does not imply that there is a tacit agreement in place for it to happen.

Its just my opinion. I think its been discussed by the teams and will happen.

In case anyone has forgot, Drew Brees suffered a serious injury to his throwing shoulder in the season finale. Brees didn't have the strongest arm before the injury and this certainly won't help.
Don't expect the Chargers to unload Rivers this season because Brees is an UFA and they don't even know if he will be able to play at the start of TC.

Just so you understand. Patrick Ramsey never has and never will be worth a trade for John Abraham. Ramsey is worthy of a 3rd rounder from teams in the JETS position at QB....otherwise a 4th.
The better and more realistic deal would be Bryan Thomas for Ramsey.
Two former 1st rd draft picks that have not lived up to that billing.

I would do that deal and I'm sure the Jets would too.

then my suggestion, if any rumors of Rivers is out there, is taken off the table. I remember that as a matter of fact. I just didn't keep up with the Bolts on that afterwards.
Abraham is more likely to be taken by a team like Seattle.
