Towards the tail end of last year, we heard grumblings from the staff about Iffy not progressing. I hope it is just temporary. He looked to be a breakout player.

This is interesting. But shouldn't Terell look good against this offense since he has been practicing against it for two years now?

I expected Iffy to be beat out for the starters spot. Except I thought it would Lott that would do it. Certainly a surprise to hear that Terrell is the one that's leading the pack so far. It reamins to be seen whether or not hea can keep that lead though.

Bowens is an interesting player. He's known for his speed, and he brings a ton when he hits. But speed and coverage are two different things. As near as I can tell his straight line speed is very good, but it's an open question how well he can cover a shifty WR in the open field.

So that leads me to believe that Bowen's primary responsibility will be to use that speed in the underneath zones, closer to the line of scrimmage. He can play back yet still bring the effective safety blitz. He can break on a WR before that WR has full speed going. And he can come up and use that hitting ability to support the run D.

Which leaves me to believe that his primary responsibility will closer to a strong safety than the last line of defense.

So if that's the case, then Ohalete, Terrell, and Lott are likely battling it out for a starting free safety role.

Ohalete is clearly the least suited to that. He's the bigger safety (227 lbs according to Redskins.com - almost OLB size) who hits, rather than the speed guy who can range in the deep field and get over to the play. So my guess is that he'll end up behind and backing up Bowens. The other knock on him last year was play recognition, that his physical skills were hampered by his ability to make the quick read and correct decision.

Terell and Lott are actully more like CBs. Lott played CB his senior college season as I recall, and some think that Terell wouln't be a bad nickel CB in a pinch, and certainly could be a dime CB. So those guys are likely battling it out for the other safety spot.

My guess is that Terell's experience, and closing speed might be giving him the edge at this stage of training camp. He gets a rough ride from the fans, who I think have blamed him for things that weren't his fault. yet I'm not so sure that he isn't a decent safety.

So I don't think that Terell vs. Ohalete is the right way to think about it. I think it's Bowen vs. Ohalete, and Terrell vs. Lott.

But it's early yet, so we'll have to see how it shakes out.

Iffy may not practice well but hot dam if he does not make plays when its game time...I hope the coaches see this.

I have to admit that Terrel looked good in practice. He picked of a pair of passes in Fridays 11 on 11 drills.

I just want the best guy out there. If Terrell has stepped it up a notch this year and deserves the spot, then that's great. All I've heard is great things from him so far. I don't think it matters that it is coming against his own team because unless he sits in on the offensive huddle, he doesn't know what play is being run.

I bashed Terrell alot last year, rightfully so. But, the word has been all off-season that he has worked hard, progressed and I must admit, he looks pretty good. Good improvement. If he keeps it up and earns the spot through quality play i have no problems with it.

Very well said sir. I just want the best tandem back there. Make plays when it counts.

Look at it this way....we'll have depth at the Safety spots as well....

The post by Terry hits the nail right on the head and I agree with him 100%. I think it is Bowen vs. Ohalete and Terrell vs. Lott.

I am very excited about the play of Bowen. With his straight line speed and hard hitting ability, I think he might give the Redskins a dimension at SS similar to the way LeRoy Butler was used in Green Bay. Does that excite anyone?

Redskins.com 8/4 afternoon report...

"Safety David Terrell continues to have a strong camp. The fourth-year player closed in on wide receiver Laveranues Coles, who was running a crossing pattern into the end zone, and swatted away a sure touchdown pass. “They tried to sneak it in,” Terrell shouted out, “but no go.”

Folks, he is playing well, he is playing with heart. Terrell may deserve this position.
