Quarterback Chris Simms agreed to a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wednesday.
The signing comes two days before Simms would have become a restricted free agent and allows the Bucs to keep the quarterback who started the last 10 games in the 2005 season after starter Brian Griese went down with a knee injury.
Terms of the contract were not released by the team.
Simms, drafted by the Bucs in 2003, won six of his 10 starts and led the team to an NFC South championship. He completed 191-of-313 passes for 2,035 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Interesting. Kind of surprised they didn't lock up to something a bit longer considering his age and progression last season. I thought Simms came around well really. Guess they want to make sure he's for real. If he comes out like a barn burner they may regret only doing a year.

I think it may have something to do with CBA and all.

my sentiments exactly, this is odd, and next season a lot of people might be laughing at this move. CBA or not you should always find a way to lock up your team leaders especially the qbs.

If he blows up this season they're gonna end up having to pay a lot more next year so might as well have locked him up now. Dum move in my oppinion for example, imagine how much Moss would cost now had we jus given him a one year deal or jus had him play on his original contract last year.

It seems to me that Tampa Bay still thinks Griese is the answer to all their problems. They have a strange love affair with that man and I wouldn't be surprised to see him be the starter this year.

I wouldn't either and I think it would be the wrong choice. Simms came through and played admirably in Griese's absence. Gruden, I believe, does have a thing for Griese.

I disagree, my money is on Griese being a cap casualty.

ill go with that too. i think the bucs are still unsure on simms, and signing him to a big deal could backfire if he doesnt continue developing next year. but if he does continue to improve, i expect them to sign him to a long extension midseason, higher than a long term deal he would have gotten this year, but smaller than one he would command next year.
