Redskins: Morton moving up

News
The Redskins' muddled backfield competition is not much clearer after the weekend, but the Washington Times reported that Chad Morton has been very impressive. The kick return specialist has "wowed crowds with his moves" and shown a tendency to turn short passes into long gains. Both Ladell Betts (elbow) and Kenny Watson (knee) have been nursing injuries and slipped a bit in the competition. Meanwhile Trung Canidate, the current holder of the top spot, continues to have a very tenuous hold on his job. Canidate apparently did nothing distinguishing over the past few days, except drop at least one catchable pass.

We seriously doubt that Morton would become the top back in this system, but unless Canidate distances himself from the competition, we are looking at a backfield-by-committee.

i remember reading that SS said he was only going to carry 3 TB's. if he follows through on that, and trung continues to be less than they hoped he would be, do they keep him just because he cost them a draft pick or is he a legite candidate (no pun intended) for being cut?

I think we'll see Canidate on first and second downs, Morton on third, and Watson or Betts in goal-line situations (although Bryan Johnson could get a large number of those carries). Say hello to the committee.

Morton doubles as KR, so he wouldn't take up an extra slot at RB.
Canidate, Watson & Betts makes 1,2, & 3.

If someone goes I think it will be Watson, just because I don't think they'll admit Betts was a waist at #2 (even though he was clearly outperformed by Watson). Watson is unexeptional.

No, Redbeard, there's normally not a special slot on the roster for kick returner. The KR takes up some other position too, usually a backup. That's what Morton will be doing at RB.

I think trung will take it cuz he's the best... at least till Betts is 100% and caught up

This is the way I see it also. Canidate on 1st and 2nd, Morton on 3rd and long, Betts on 3rd and short, with Cartwright and Johnson getting a few in short and goal.

Haven't heard anything on Cartright yet this offseason, this guy should be our goaline back as he can catch and run over people

Yeah, it'll be a committee backfield. That's fine with me. Works pretty well in Oakland. Looks like Morton is determined to make the Redskins coaches live up to their promise to give him a shot at playing from scrimmage. Good for him. Considering his return duties, I can't see him being the every down back unless he blows the competition away. [And then the Skins would have to find another returner because you can't do that full-time and carry the ball 20 times from scrimmage.] It wouldn't surprise me to see Morton playing on third downs. I think Canidate would also be ideal for that role.

One thing is for certain: Ladell Betts better recover from that injury soon.

Just what I was thinking. He's a natural for that role and a much better runner than Bryan Johnson.
