The Washington Post reports QB Danny Wuerffel was less than sharp in his first practice with the Washington Redskins today at Redskins Park. Wuerffel, signed yesterday to a one-year contract, admitted that he was pretty rusty. "I threw some good balls early and not-so-good balls later," he said. HC Steve Spurrier agreed with Wuerffel's self-assessment. "He looked all right," said Spurrier, who coached Wuerffel to the 1996 Heisman Trophy while at the University of Florida. "He threw a few that he could've thrown a little sharper. I told him, 'Danny, you need to zip the ball. I'm tired of hearing everyone say you lob it.' "

Now why woudl they print that. Thats not news, of coruse he is not sharp, never has been:rolleyes:

AMEN. Man Danny will never keep the ball with Coles on a fly pattern :D

Heck he might have trouble gettingthe ball in front of Jansen on a fly pattern for that matter :D

Spurrier's never seen zip on Danny's balls, why bother asking for it by now?

I like the tone of the articles on Wuerffel's role. He will be pushing Johnson to grasp the offense, get better, and serve as a facilitator to Ramsey. This is a good thing. Ramsey said himself last year that no one knows the offense as well as Wuerffel and having him mentor and help learn it was invaluable. Essentially, we are all getting what many of us asked for, Wuerffel as a psuedo QB coach for young Ramsey. No he can't throw, yes he is weaked arm, but i would never question his grasp for this offense.

From your mouth to the Almighty's ears!

I sincerely hope DW is the mentor for PR.
If not, I hope Danny Snyder gives Danny Wuerfel the hook faster that Coach Spurrier changed QB's last year.

This is all about Patrick Ramsey, period. Making him comfortble, giving him support, someone to bounce questions off of and learn the playbook from. Stop looking at Wuerful as an alternative.

Wish they would have just brought him in as an assistant..any chance of seeing that noodle arm back in play does not breed confidence.

As long as he never plays a down in the regular season, I'm happy to have Danny Wuerffel on the roster. He seems like a nice guy. Smart. Knows the offense. Can probably help teach it to others. May be able to relate to Ramsey better than Spurrier can. Should be helpful.

Just don't make me watch him play in the Autumn. Not again.

I totally agree. Bringing Wuerffel back in as a mentor to both guys sounds smart to me. He has no ego to bruise and no other options. I could care less if Hamden loses his spot because of thisl.

Big surprise. When you suck at something you generally not sharp at it either.

Why not just get it overwith and hire Wuerffel as a coach?

He might have Drew Henson syndrome? Maybe he thinks he can still play

Most likely the reason being bringing DW back as a player is that RJ is not grasping the offense real well, Hamdan is obviously still very raw and will be a project, and the fact is, wobbly arm and all, if Ram does get hurt and need to sit a game or two or three, SS feels we are in a better position to win with a QB that has perfected the system and knows the system than a backup who is struggling to understand the system, looking at areas and picking up reads.

That all being said, I understand teh Spurrier thought pattern and maybe danny woudl do OK with a real OLine and speedy Wrs if Ram were to get hurt, but i say it again and again, Shane Matthews looked better than Wuerffel last season. If he wanted someone that knows his system, why not Shane? No Shane wasn't great But IMO, he looked a helluva alot better than DW. Only think I can think of is the relatioship and trust that unfolded between DW and Ramsey.

I don't know that I necessarily believe that Matthews played better than Wuerffel last year, IMHO (Thanks CarMike). Danny had what, 4 starts? He lit up the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, it's not his fault that our D couldn't stop Emmit and company that day. Smoot couldn't cover Bryant cause he hurt his hip the week before against the Rams, a game in which Wuerffel was 16 of 23 with no interceptions. Matthews really only played well in 1 game last year, and that was week 1 against the Cardinals.

I think the case can be made that with the improved O Line and speedier wideouts (who should have more separation from the DB's,) that Danny will be more effective this year, if he had to play! I think this is a smart move, if only for the fact that he can continue to be a confidant of Ramsey on the sidelines.
