If you think this didnt' prompt K. Campbell to re-sign, think again. LB's know Lb's and Carter is capable of being a great "hybrid" LB/DE for us. Campbell wants back in on what he knows will be a very good team. True I may not know what Campbell's chances were out there, but I do know what a defense like this will be.

That bothers me but we still ahve our 2nd round draft pick to get a very good DE we can workin on a rotation on the cheap.
I think back to after the Dallas game and Daniels got 4 sacks. he said something along the lines that they changed the scheme recently and that is why he was getting more sacks and the coaches knew why there was lack in production early on. Daniels was very productive the last few games and Wynn just restructured so I doubt they cut him or bench him.

The Niners switched to a 3-4 last year so Carter played linebacker. He didn't transition well because Nolan is clueless on how to use him. He had his better seasons when he was playing RDE in a 4-3 and he's more natural in that role. The Skins will probably mix up where they use him because of the ridiculous amount of crazy formations that GW comes up with.

I'm beginning to feel very comfortable with our OLB options even if Carter plays primarily on the line. We have young guys but they still have managed to get some playing time in the last year or two. Clemons looks talented and I've always like Khary Campbell. You're worried about LaVar's absence?? Were you worried last year when he wasn't playing??
Carter will resume his natural role as a DE as he did before Mike Nolan tried to change him. Carter had trouble adjusting to LB, so I suspect this guy is our main pass rusher. RDE is my best guess.
And, yes, this is a coup....trust me. One of those M. Washington-type pickups. If Carter's health stays tip-top, we are gonna be a such a wrecking ball of a team.

Don't be surprised to see them get the best player left at either Tight End or even Defensive End. Our draft policy is based on value and not need, if there is a good player that fits the mold I could see us still trying to get a TE or Defensive End,
I don't think it's a guarantee that we get a CB or Olineman, but I would not be opposed to the selection. IMO, it's still a tossup with TE/DE added to the realm of possibilities.

If Carter's health stays tip-top, we are gonna be a such a wrecking ball of a team.
absolutely, his best fit is at def.end.but man in williams zone blitz packages this guy gives it alot more versitility.and now gregg williams can disguise alot more.not including archuleta to the scene.our def is going to be freakin scary.

I can see Clemons[LDE] and Carter[RDE] being our pass-rushers, spelling Wynn and Daniels on 3rd downs and Daniels to spell either one on some obvious pass downs.
Carter is going to be playing Defensive End, we don't need help at WLB and it is NOT Carter's strength.

I think this signing might put the John Abraham business to rest. We are filling needs wisely and there really is not much room for Abraham. We will be fine without his services.
I was regretting having nothing to do on draft day, but after landing Lloyd, El, Archuletta, and now Carter I really don't care what goes down in April. This is our draft. We can be boring as hell with our 5-7 and take O-line depth and I'll still dance down the halls.
Maybe we draft a punter though. Just a thought. It's lovely when your thoughts boil down to punter and O-line depth, huh? (I'm assuming we pick up a DB at some point, you know).

Yea, I would be quite disappointed if we didn't address the DT quality/depth question this off-season with at least a mid-level FA signing or 3rd round draft pick. I love the heart and will of Salave'a but contrary to most HailRedskins.com members, we could still do better at that position. I was hoping there would be a play at Maake Kemeontau before the Panthers signed him. Maybe after the June 1st cuts we could pick up a player or two. I believe Demetric Evans played some DT this year as well.
Also, any definite responses to where Andre Carter will play on the defense? He's a natural pass-rusher at the DE spot but some here think he's being brought in to compete at the WLB spot?

No, but I do think that Dan Snyder is trying to stick it to Nolan by signing his former players and forcing him watch them flourish in DC.
Nolan deserves it for not knowing what he had (check my sig). Brandon Lloyd is a marvelous kid. To not let him be himself in the locker room is a crime. If you don't treat your playmakers with respect you ought to lose them.
Denver didn't value Clinton -- we do. It will be the same with Lloyd, Carter. If the Raiders take the wild ones, send us your All-Pro callibre players who don't fit in under brainless coaching staffs.
Yeah, let us be known as the team that assembles the cream talent under a Hall of Fame coach and brings them the Super Bowl their talent level suggests.
We're not some team throwing money around anymore. We're a team guided by a genius with an owner who closes deals.

ive been saying this for the past 2 weeks, we need to look at fast playmakers that can make tackles on the edges, since we have solidified our other areas of need on defense (that i assumed we would) theres no reason not to take advantage of a 2nd round pick and fill in our final voids on defense either an OLB or CB

I'm sure this was posted somewhere, but it has renewed relevance with the signing of Carter (PFT, BTW):
As the Washington Redskins continue to amass new players days after they supposedly were teetering at the edge of cap hell, plenty of folks around the league are scratching their heads.
Snyder isn't breaking any rules, so the rest of the league must not know them. I think it all has to do with length of contract (combined with restructures, etc.). By signing guys to 6-7 year deals with boni, we prorate the deals over a long period and minimize the cap hit now.
People hear these blockbuster deals and freak out, not realizing the majority of the hit comes later. By that time the cap expands and you rework/release players and go to work again.
You have to hand it to our FO. They took crap from us before, but now they look like the envy of the league. All they needed was a Hall of Fame Coach to pick out the players... :)

I was thinking about some of the "conversions" we did this offseason... I wonder if the "guaranteed" money includes the roster bonuses later in the contract that are meant to be "converted". Would explain how we can keep signing guys left and right and still be fiscally responsible (sort of like the TO deal: some money upfront, a roster bonus to be converted over the rest of the contract if the player pans out otherwise cut your losses)...

Why would we cut Hall, only to turn around and pay as much (or more) for someone else?
Um, because he's Adam "clutch" Vinitieri??? He's like Bettis scoring touchdowns. Besides, we'll need his production in the Super Bowls.

Just talked to a serious Niner fan here at work. He said Carter is very good at getting to the qb in one on ones. He was double teamed most of the season though causing a lack of production. Sounds like the same problem with Lloyd. No more double teams boys. You have a real football team with a Super Bowl champion coach. Glad to have you on board.

It's great to see a solid defensive player signed by Coach. Carter should flourish in this system.
You mean another solid defensive player. Archuletta will flourish too. Taylor solves his off-the-field issue and any receiver facing us will need to take out a policy with Lloyd's of London before they play us.
I will personally congratulate Brandon Lloyd if that happens, too. Blame a guy for not laying out for Nolan's 9ers. Enjoy watching him soar in the playoffs, Frisco. I'll take Lloyd, you keep Bryant and you can have the picks too. We wanted this guy for a reason. We have a reason for wanting all our guys. And yes, they will all flourish here because that seems to be the trend. We find a rusty penny and make 'em shine.

I DARE teams to double Carter. That'll either leave Daniels in one-on-one, or GW will overload a blitz, and Archuleta will rip out someone's spleen. Either way, our defense DESTROYS.

People around the league are forgetting that not only are we bringing in the best talent from other teams where they were neglected/not wanted, we're handing them to the best coaching staff in all of football. It's not like Williams and Saunders are working with cast offs. We have premier talent taught by mentors with otherworldly knowledge and character.
This is beyond spending money. This is building a quality team.

That's the brilliance of this Free Agency period.
In the past 2 years, we HAVE worked with a lot of second-tier players, and our D has been in the top 10 both years. Our offense finished 11th last year, and we were a playoff team with a bunch of non-Pro Bowlers, as evidenced by our (just) 2 players in Hawaii this year.
Now, we have signed legitimate talent, and have, somehow, IMPROVED our coaching staff. This quite possibly is the dream team of football.
My only concern, now, is the hype is TOO much. But I'm not ready to go there yet. :)

I called in to our local SportsTalk on the way home today and got into a mild argument. The host was repeating the mantra that we'll be in cap hell, blah, blah, blah. I asked "Would you rather be a Skins fan with your team up against the cap every year or an Eagles fan whose team is $30m under the cap?" The point, that was missed by the host, was that it is irresponsible on the Eagles part to NOT spend more. The host made the point that the Eagles went out and got TO. To me, if you have the dollars, it is irresponsible to not go out and get more than TO. Unfortunately, that point wasn't taken very well by the host. He clearly has been following Don Banks and Pastabelly and whomever else the 4-letter network puts up.

I agree and with our 2nd, a 4th or 5th for Ramsey, along with our picks in the 6th and one in the 7th we should be able to add the necessary "depth" to the OL, MLB, OLB, TE and CB positions that we need to be a very solid ballclub.

Three words:
Lavar Love Hewitt.
By dumping him, we've saved enough money in future years to squeeze and twist the contracts so we can afford these guys now. They aren't getting that big Signing bonuses and have roster bonuses down the line which we could guarantee and spread out. Also, I assume that every contract has a voidable year with a balloon payment of 5-7 million so they look bigger than they really are.

Thanks for the confirmation on the cap akh. I believe this FO has learned from past mistakes and has signed young veteran talent to very manageable contracts over the course of the current CBA in attempt to win now but also ensure that we have the talent (especially at the playmaking positions) to be very competitive for the next few years.

Great assessment. I had voidable final years on ALL and base yearly amounts very affordable. Meaning it could have been bonus with fulll spread of whole contract or larger amount up front in the first 3 yrs and voidable after year 4 or yr 5. Looks like magic year is 6.

I'm not sure that Carter is worth the money. He hasn't done anything the past few years and gets hurt all the time. This is the most questionable move we made, IMO.
The WR moves are good, because we can run 3 WR sets and stretch the field, which opens up natural running lanes for Portis. Then, if Ds bring the Safeties up to stop the run, our fast WRs can get behind the DBs. We should be very dangerous on O.

basically he wasted your time with his elementary school knowledge of the NFL. If you like a team and are a fan, leave it at that, if that is all you know, but don't get on the air and just because you're talk show host, lambaste people as though they're on a team you hate. That's what you ran into, a HATER and he refuses to be a STUDENT of the game, like most of us.
Archuletta said it all. "I'm a fan of the Redskins' defense". He had been studying them for 2 yrs. If that talk show host had studied the Redskins capology news, updates in REALITY, he'd be a fan of the Redskins methods this season.

That is the biggest reason I wanted the Skins and Lavar to part ways. I had no idea the amount of players we would be able to get due to the removal of his contract, and especially how soon after due to the buyout deal. Seeing that letting him go could lead to signing all these guys just solidifies my opinion that it was a must move for the Redskins.

True, but without me being an expert on the cap, the money saved from Lavar's contract this year and the 10 million or so per year that were upcoming has to free up a ton of options, with the cap continually growing and the various ways to structure contracts due to the CBA extension. I would think it was a key factor in being able to sign all these guys. Especially the removal of his cap numbers in upcoming seasons.

Well, it probably made the structure of these contract more manageable in the future.Maybe, but I wouldn't put alot of stock into that simply because if he would have stayed, it would have certainly been with more manageable numbers then what he was set to count against the cap previously. Also, the cap is already reported to go up to at least $107-108mil next year. That's another factor.
My only point is, let's not forget that a slew of guys restructured. Those deals have more ofa bearing on what we are able to do right now then anything else IMO.

He freed up enough money over the next four years to pay for most of these guys(depending on the break down, but 10 million a year probably pays for ARE, Lloyd, Arch and Carter) and also having the free space allowed the skins to guarantee and spread out the Roster bonuses which freed up another 10 million this year and 8 million next.
