Free Agency Review

1. WR Brandon Lloyd {49ers}: Traded for 3{06} and 4{07} this deal brings a young, up and coming player. Lloyd does not bring the size that the Redskins were lacking, but he does bring big play ability to the team. Lloyd will force teams to respect another target on the outside. The thing that I like most about the Lloyd deal is that he is only turning 25 years old this season. In essence he is just beginning to develop and with our coaching staff that could be scary. Lloyd’s circus catches will also help in the development of QB Jason Campbell, who should have plenty of confidence in his WRs. The major knocks on Lloyd are inconsistency and attitude. These are both problems that this coaching staff excel at dealing with, plus who wouldn’t have some attitude problems in San Francisco.
Grade: B+, losing the draft picks hurts but the added threat out weighs the picks.

2. WR Antwan Randle El {Steelers}: The versitily that Randle El brings to a team is limitless. I think we will se lots of Randle El returning kicks, an area the Skins have not had a weapon like Randle El at since Brian Mitchel, and attacking from the slot. I think it would be a mistake to take Randle El out of the slot were he is so dangerous at exploiting mismatches. No one can talk about Randle El without discussing the gimmick play possibilities that add another dimension to and offence when executed and called properly. Once again a receiver without the size that the Skins were lacking, but I believe size is overrated when you can overwhelm a team with speed.
Grade: B, the Skins simply over paid for a player that will be part of a unit, besides that the options for him are intriguing.

3. S Adam Archuleta {Rams}: This might be one of the most underrated siging the Skins have made this offseason. Matt Bowen at the beginning of the 2004 campaign was a terror against Tampa Bay, registering 2 sacks, and Archuleta is like the talent Matt Bowen. Archuleta brings improved size and blitzing ability over Ryan Clark. Physically {6’0” 223lbs.} he is ideal to have in the box as Gregg Williams so often does. I think that the most important thing about Archuleta is his work ethic, he studies, his workouts are legendary and he is a disciplined player. These are all traits that every Redskins should have and hopefully they rub off on some of them {Sean Taylor} Archuleta is a significant upgrade over Ryan Clark, and the negatives of Archuleta’s game will be concealed by the defence. He is not a big play guy in coverage, well we have three other guys who are. He also provides insurance in case Sean taylor ends up missing time due to his assault trial, which is possible because even is he pleads to something he gets suspended for at least a game. This signing adds another component to a defence that is already very good.
Grade: A-, once again points are deducted for over paying, but the benefit of giving Gregg Williams the weapons that he wants are obvious.

4. DE Andre Carter {49ers}: This signing at some point had to happen. The Skins have been deperate for a young speed rusher for a number of years. All Carter has to do to be considered a success is get consistent pressure. Lack of pressure lots the Skins at least 2 games last year versus Oakland and Denver. Carter has everything you look for in a DE, size {6’4” 260lbs.}, athletic ability {played LB}, and work ethic. His sack numbers have dropped over the last couple of years but he was playing on an awful San Fran team. He fact that Carter comes with similar athletic ability as John Abraham, but with a smaller price tag and much less baggage is another plus. This signing to me was the most important one of all as it gives the Skins a legitimate pass rush threat that may not have been available in he 2nd round of the draft and at 27 he should be around for a while. The knock on Carter is his ability to stay healthy. This is less of a concern as the Skins should have a strong DE rotation. Carter and Daniels will start with Wynn coming in for obvious running downs.
Grade: A, the Skins needed a pass rush and they avoided John Abraham and still ended up with a talented player.

5. TE Christian Fauria {Patriots}: Fauria is a signing that went largely unnoticed, but could have a serious impact. With the WRs that have been signed I think the Skins will adopt the 3 wide set, single TE set, that the Chiefs use to such great success under Saunders. Cooley will start at TE and fill the role of Tony Gonzalez. What Fauria gives the Skins is a blocking threat at TE and a leader the knows how to win. He will play the running downs and Cooley the passing downs. He can also mentor Captain Chaos in the finer points of being an on the line TE. He is only a stop gap at 34, but should provide enough time to develop a late round pick.
Grade: B, a solid and cheap signing that adds experienced depth to an important position in the Saunders offence.

6. QB Todd Collins {Chiefs}: A veteran that knows the system. He will fill the role of 3rd string QB and clipboard jockey once Ramsey is dealt. This signing has long term benefits though. If need be we can cut/retire Brunell to save money and Collins can be the backup. Also it provides another coach for Campbell in learning the Saunders offence.
Grade: B, it’s hard to get excited about a back up QB but he has a number of benefits for very little money.

Recommended Signings:

OL Depth: OG/OT Kevin Barry {Packers} he can play either OG or OT and has good size and should come cheap. Barry added to a couple of 2nd day picks should give the Skins good depth.

Nickel CB: CB Jamar Fletcher {Chargers} he is only 27 and is a professional nickel CB. He has decent size and enough talent to start in case of emergency.

Or

MLB/OLB: Sam Cowart {Vikings} I like the idea of signing Cowart. He gives great versatility to the LB core and would be dirt cheap.

How doable would that be? Cowart and Fletcher have come up as potential signings, but I haven't heard anything yet about Barry. Is he semi-officially on our radar or is he a guy you'd like to have?

Just wondering, since it sounds like a GREAT idea.

I haven't heard anything about us looking at Barry but their are a number of options like Mike Pearson from the Jags.

Good job. I think we should do a "favorite FA signing poll".

i like everything in this post, but i have a question about cooley: Do you really think he will play TE for us? i don't know if there has been some official announcement or anything... but i hope he does! sellers as FB and him at TE would be sick.

Since we don't have the poll yet - what about Orlando Brown as line depth. Ravens cut him today. No idea what his $$ demands would be...

Great Post. My thoughts
Archuleta: Perfect for us, talented and hard worker guy, he'll have a big impact next year, If he stays healthy he is going to go to the Probowl. We are going to adore this guy
Carter: Very intelligent signing. He brings youth and talent to our DE's Corp. 9 - 10 sacks next year. Please stay healthy!!
B . Lloyd: He is just 24 and has more than 100 receptions and 1500 yards in the league. Good trade for us. If he matures he can be a force in our offense. Our 2nd WR the next 5 years, I expect
Fauria: Good signing. A great blocker
Collins: a veteran backup
Randle El: I like him, but I would have used the money invested in him in Ayodele and McQuarters. I wish he shows me I am wrong

Gibbs was like a kid in a candy store when he introduced the new Skins , especially at the Brandon's press conference. I have never seen him this happy(besides the SB wins)...well maybe I have...after the game at Dallas 2005. August won't come soon enough!!!

i'm still in shock. i cant believe we got all these guys. I expected a serviceable receiver and an end, but not all this.

i loved Andre Carter back when the 49ers drafted him. He has a huge motor and is the perfect replacement for Lavar (and i mean the Lavar in his prime, the Lavar we needed and wanted but never seemed to have on a consistent basis) as a "tweener" d-end, outside linebacker.

I would not underestimate the signing of Randle El either. he reminds me of Brian Mitchell in his prime, only better, and we all know how much Gibbs utilized him. He's another ex-college QB who can run, catch, and handle all the special teams return duties, and could even play emergency QB if necessary, or at least throw a pass once in a while on a trick play.

Archuleta is a substantial upgrade over Ryan Clark. i said a while back that if we could get a stud strong safety to pair up with Taylor the whole complexion of the defense would change, but i had no idea we would get one this good.

I'm not too sure about Fauria, because he is old and not very big, but Gibbs has been dying for a blocking TE since Rasby and Koz couldnt get it done. maybe this guy has a couple of good years left.

As for Collins, it seems good coaches always take a QB with them to help coach on the field. it worked for Dick Vermiel when he took Trent Green with him to KC, so in a way, this is similar. he is not the starter that Green is, but who knows, he might beat out Brunell for the starting job. if so, he certainly wouldnt be the first QB to blossom later in his career, and he should be fresh and very at-ease with the system.

Jimoh has slowly gained my respect, and i emphasize slowly, but the coaches seem to love him. I would still like to get a 3rd corner, because it is very rare for anyone to play an entire season without injury, and if Springs or Harris gets hurt, i dont know who would start right now, except Jimoh.

Excellent work, CC!

I agree with pretty much everything but I have a 3-part question:

OK, you stated that you think the base offensive formation will be the 3-wide set with Cooley at TE and Fauria at TE on running plays.
My question is how much do you think the Skins will use a pro-set: 2 WR, TE and a FB-Who will be the starting FB (Sellers, White?) and how often this formation will be used?

The reason I'm asking is because I don't think we will see the 3-wide set all the time, especially not in the 2nd half with a lead.

I think it will be used a great deal, however not as religiously as Gibbs was using it in 2004-2005. Saunders' offense is based around a 3-WR set, but I am sure we will use a standard pro-set to keep defenses off-balance.

FA has been very exciting and I would rate our acquisitions about the same as ConradCountry.........it will be interesting to see how we rate them in Dec.
there will hopefully be an A+ or two but probably a C or two also and possibly a D

A guy that I think could be a useful pick up and that I've not seen mentioned is Ni'all Diggs. He was cut by the Packers because he's had some injury problems but when he's on the field, I always thought he was a decent player. He was quite highly regarded when he came out of Ohio State.

I would think that he will be relatively cheap and would certainly fill the WLB hole we currently have.

He's still fairly young and in GW's system, could be a real bargain......

49ers | Team visits with Evans
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 20:04:50 -0800

Jason LaCanfora, of the Washington Post, reports free agent DE Demetric Evans (Redskins) visited the San Francisco 49ers Friday, March 17, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, and has two more visits planned next week.

This scares me. I know he is a backup but I like this guy and am very comfortable with him as our 4th DE. the 49ers might want to stick it to us for signing carter. They might overpay but it will be one more position where we lack depth.

I loved the way he played towards the end of the season. He's good against the run and he swatted down numerous passes. He had a sack in the last playoff game I believe. I like this guy.

Fauria will suprise some people, he's been pretty solid for a long time in this league.

Carter will be a Beast thanks to Blache and GW.

Lloyd will go against lesser corners making him more effective

Randle El will be all over the field reverses, punts, passes, etc.

Archuleta will be our Blitz Factor ala Palomalu.

Collins will be Collins, hopefully never heard from, but the teacher to all.

Definitely need another CB, LB, and OL. Whoever they pick is fine with me.

As always C.C. great post, but my concern as always is the o-line. One or two injuries and it won't matter who is qb. or how many great recieves we have. Hopefully they will take the Ramsey money and sign 2 good backups and not figure on '' Projects '' they may draft in the 6-7 rounds of the draft.

Here are a few thoughts from my point of view on FA

1. I still don't understand why we give up a 3rd and 4th round pick to acquire a WR when there was comparable WR talent on the unrestricted market.

2. I just got back from Vegas and my sportsbook seats at the Bellagio just happened to be next to like 8 guys from STL. These guys were very knowledgeable sports fans in general so I had to ask their opinion on the Archuleta signing and what they thought of him. They all shared the opinion that Archuleta can't cover, takes poor angles, really isn't that fast, and is only useful in the box. Their words didn't come out of ire towards the Redskins approach to FA, but rather from the frustration they had with Archuleta's overall play for the Rams. They did agree that having Taylor would help compensate for Archuleta's lack of coverage skills, as they thought he was the best safety in the league. This kind of got me worried a bit b/c this isn't the first time I have heard this type analysis of Archuleta. Just thought I would share the perspective of some die hard Rams fans. I personally like the signing, but don't think he is deserving of top 5 saftey money.

I love the Carter signing. I love having Randle El here too. I just hope we didn't overpay for all these guys. Only time will tell.

Edit: We still really need a CB or 2, a LB to start most likely, and depth on the Oline or we are 1 injury from a disaster IMO. I also would love another DL w/ the 2nd rd pick, if we have addressed CB by that point in time.

We have to address the O-line. Until we do that, our job isn't done.
