Unfortunately I won't be at the Draft Party this year either. Heather and I are closing on our first new house and we have a deadline right at the end of April to show fiscal ability to close and although It won't be that tight I can't justify taking a risk when we don't have a 1st rounder.

I will make my annual trip to Fed Ex this year and hopefully for the Tailgate since I should be free in September.

Oh, I wasn't trying to be critical of Gibbs GM moves since he has returned (the only exception being that he waited too long to trade Ramsey and thus cost the team a first day pick). It was just my tongue-in-cheek way of cautioning everyone that the draft outing on Sat (Apr 29) may just be a lawn party with no picks to celebrate.

Dan Snyder should seriously consider moving the party to Sunday, when the Skins are guaranteed to have a bunch of selections. It may be the first time in NFL history where thousands gather to cheer picks no one has ever heard of made from the 5th round and below.

While I think Gibbs got bluffed a little in giving up the 2nd rounder to Denver in the Portis/Bailey trade, I can't quarrel with what Portis has meant to this team. Denver kind of had the Skins over a barrel because of Bailey's outright refusal to re-sign here.

Cooley's cost (a 2nd rounder) is on the high side. But, once again, I can't quarrel with the results. He has been outstanding.

Wilson turned out to be a bust, but 5th rounders often are. The school is still out on Molinaro. Although, it is not a good sign when Buges chose Raymer over him in the Seattle playoff game when Ray Brown got hurt. I don't care if Molinaro is a tackle instead of a guard; Raymer was not a guard either.

As for Jason Campbell, I have every reason to believe that he will be the QB that leads the Skins to the promise land. Gibbs spent considerable capital to acqure him, and Gibbs is almost never wrong about QBs.

I think White and McCune are going to be busts, but 4th round and below are seldom big "hits".

A 3rd and a 4th for Lloyd would be well-worth it if he is as good as Gibbs thinks he is.

I would not have given up a 5th for Thrash (especially since he was due to be released by the Eagles), but at least he has been a terrific special teamer both in coverage and as a sure-handed returner.

As for the low picks the Skins got for Gardner and Ramsey, it is about time for the team to uncover a late round gem like Hanburger, Coleman, Schlereth, McKenzie, etc.

I totally agree that in the NFL today there are many ways to build a consistent winner. The way Gibbs is operating--signing quality FAs in their prime, trading draft choices for quality players in their prime, making good draft selections with the remaining picks--has worked wonders to turn this franchise around.

There is no draft party. I e-mailed them and Karl Swanson replied that there will not be one because the first pick is late on Saturday.

Huge bummer. The draft day party has less to do with picks and the draft than it does with fans and their first initial bonding of the season. I guess they figured they could afford to nix it since they have the beach blitz in June. But hell, thats over 5 weeks after the draft.

This sucks.

Thanks, I'm assuming right now that I'll be staying close to the Vienna metro stop. Most people who fly in and out of Dulles have their own car service and don't have to deal with 20 dollar cab rides...I will most likely not be so fortunate.

No, I thought about calling ahead and reserving a room, but thought better of it when I imagined the drunken musicial chairs as people try to float around and talk to one another. We'll be in the central bar area, right next to the shuffleboard tables, pool tables and everything. That way people can do what they want and not be tied down to a table or seating arraignment. Also, the problem with a table or room is that its basically pointless to try and plan how many people will show up. If a few people show up who havent told anyone that they will show up, or people don't show up who said they would, then a room or table is useless.

I tried, even got up at 3:30 am to pack and catch a flight. Hope everyone had a good time.

Yes, its a huge problem. It gets progressively worse every time I fly. I used to never have any problems flying.

Sorry man, I didn't have the phone, it was with my wife and obviously turned off.
We had a billion activities going on yesterday and by the time everyone was home and done, it was after 6 pm and we were tired, the kids needed bath's, etc, etc.

Yeah, I did my best. I figured it was going to be a really stretch to try and make it--flight into National, hotel out near Fair Oaks, then out to Bethesda, all in about an hour and a half. But, I'm here for a job interview so if I take the job then I won't have any more excuses like that.
