Spurrier stated he plans to get Ramsey and Rob Johnson between 10 and 15 pass attempts each, plus get Wuerffel 8 to 10. Picking the mid number would put us at 33 attempts, and picking high numbers would put us at 40. Can we expect from this season to have Ramsey throwing between 35 and 40 passes per game? We'bve talked abotu this before, but knowing what we know now, watching the successes of Coles and Gardner in camp, can we expect even more passing?

I think so. I think we are truly going to have a Rams type offense. Throw first, run later. I think we are going to see a 75-25 or even 80-20 on the pass-run ratio. As long as that works, I don't see anything different.

Rams were actually extremely balanced in their good years. The team who went pass happy last year was buffalo. At least thats what the stats show.

You've gotta have at least a decent running game to be successful and soak up time of possession in key circumstances. Our D can't be on the field 40 minutes a game. Not having a bruiser like SD may hurt us in our 'separate the men from boys' division. Clearly, to be successful, a balanced attack is necessary. I believe the passing game will be more efficient and effective, but won't really mean a major shift in playcalling balance.

Even Buffalo had a 1400 yard rusher last year, I think we will have a very high pass attempts to rushes ratio this year and hopefully it works

Spurrier also said he expects Coles to hit triple digits in recepotions this year... that shows our main focus will be the ai attack. I am not certain that is all bad. With guys like Trung and Morten coming out of the backfield... that will spread the field even more nd provide more targets. Send Trung on a wide draw and then hand it to Betts up the middle. Easy 10 yards!

I was surprised that Spurrier didn't say how many passes Hamdan will get in. Or is he even playing Hamdan this weekend? I was looking forward to see him in a game type situation...

Man, I'm "old school". I believe that you use the run to "set up" the pass. If we have a strong running game, that should make our passing game that much more lethal. It will keep defenses "honest" and have to worry about the run AND the pass. Preferably, I would love to see a 40% Run/ 60% Pass ratio.

I don't know if we'll see more passing, but I think the passing game will definitely be more ambitious. Once it became clear none of the Redskins quarterbacks in 2002 could operate Spurrier's offense and that none of the wideouts had the deep speed required, he scaled things back and called more conservative passing plays. When we do throw the ball in 2003, I expect more passes downfield.

You guys will be surprised to know that Spurrier's pass/run ratio last year was pretty much close to 52/48. (I'll do some reasearch and post the actual ratio later today)
That being said...I highly doubt he changes his plan to 80/20 or even 75/25. I think we will see something more along the lines of 60/40.

I'm old school in that regard too skinsfan, but the sad reality is that some teams have all but mastered the forward pass and it does make sense that it would be better to go for a 10-15 yard gain than a 4-6 yard gain. We're gonna pass a lot. There's no question about that. We will go downfield more. If we succeed in passing, we'll pass more because it works. If we don't pass well, we'll still pass more to figure out why it doesn't. Either way, the ball will be in the air a lot. Anymore, you need a balance of both, not one setting up the other. Our backs will get carries, but probably not near what Davis got last year.

I am also a member of the old school but times they are a changin guys, When did you ever think people would fear Pittsburghs air attack as much or even more than thier running game. I believe smashmouth is gone for a while

I agree with this comment especially while we are unsettled at QB. This type of offense will take some pressure off our young QB and his backups.

I read in the Times today that it is looking like Hamden will not play in the opener. Ramsey will likely play into the 2nd, Johnson into the 3rd or 4th and Wuerffel after that.
Maybe next week.
On a positive note, I also read that it looks as if the coaches have Hamden throwing the ball really well, no hitches in his motion or anything. Sounds like they are getting the physical part of playing QB down for this guy.

With a crap ass O-line for much of the year, the Team still had the 12th highest rushing yards out of 32 teams. Our ratio was around 55% pass. The ony teams of the final 8 playoff teams that had higher run to pass ratios (they were slightly higher) had srambling QBs skewing thier figures, Michael Vick, Steve McNair... Spurrier's play calling rap, is exagerated to say the least. Similar stats exsist from his Florida days. The real problem last year was our turnover, penalty and return yards disparity. The stats show our offense being one of the biggest fumbing teams, most penalized teams and lowest kickoff return yards teams in the league. The defense altough 5th rated, was one of the worst at intercepting passes, causing fumbles, allowing kick return yards and getting flagged for penalties on defense. Altough we did not lead the league in any of these catagories, we were 2nd, 3rd or 4th in a lot! These are the areas we need to be concerned with. If these don't improve, our win/loss ratio won't.
