Vikings | F. Smoot bulks up; ready for a big year
Mon, 10 Apr 2006 05:53:38 -0700

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings CB Fred Smoot has bulked up and he's ready to put the 2005 season behind him and start the 2006 season fresh. Smoot, whose listed weight last season was 178 pounds, currently weighs 200, but he said his playing weight might be 195. "I feel like a free agent again," said Smoot, one of the players who starred during the team's three-day minicamp that concluded Sunday, April 9. "I'm feeling good about the coaches. For the first time in two years, I feel like I'm being coached. They're well organized, and every time we hit the field, we're getting something done. I got the love that came from coach (Joe) Gibbs, Gregg Williams and Marvin Lewis." Smoot wants to show Vikings fans what he's all about. "I want to prove to Minnesota that I am the best defensive back they probably have ever seen," he said.

Well at least he realizes what he had here as far as coaching is concerned but he'll never have a Defensive coach like my boy Williams.

Translation:

Mike Tice was an idiot and it is his fault I wasn't good last year.

LOL. That's what I got from that too. Last year he found out how hard it is not having a good defense around you to help suppport you. I hope he rebounds and has a good year (except for week 1 :) ).

Well it's nice to here an ex-player praise us and not bash us like some do. But like all players and people do at some point in their lives or career, realize that the grass wasn't as green as they thought it would be on the other side!

With that said...............

Look for a bulked-up Smoot to get smoked a lot this year, especially in game 1, which will be his first real test at a new playing weight. The NFC North demands physicality, but the Redskins beat you with speed.

Smoot is just not a number one corner and may not be a number 2 corner either. Smoot should have stayed in DC. He knows it too.

He deperately needs those extra pounds to keep him from getting hurt all the time with his physical play, but like you say, you got to wonder how that will effect his only mediocre speed.

well, atleast he's learning that he cant throw his body around at that light weight and expect to be able to last a full season. He still seems to have that pompous attitude but its nothing new for him.... I kinda miss having him in our secondary... too bad he wanted more than hes worth.

No way, I'd say he's closer to a number one than a number three. A lot of us are mad because he left, all he did was what a lot of our players do and go get their money.

i could live with that. i still love smoot, and the ladies do too. but seriously, its a relief considering the way other ex-skins have acted, while smoot praises our staff. its just too bad he's gonna have to learn ANOTHER system.

wow i dont think smoot is anything close to a number 1 corner. we have to remember greg williams defense really made him look good for those couple years he played for him, just like greg williams makes everybody on def. look good. we have seen how smoot really is without greg williams. well hes added more meat (i guess we'll see again this year). monday night baby thats not a good start for smoot (santana).
