The Niners officially have Regis and Jimmy Kimmel to go along with Arnaz Battle at wide reciever.

SAN DIEGO (April 12, 2006) -- The Chargers and San Francisco 49ers swapped disappointing former first-round draft picks, with San Diego getting wide receiver Rashaun Woods in exchange for cornerback Sammy Davis.

Woods was a huge disappointment for the 49ers, who chose him with the 31st pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. He set records at Oklahoma State, but never earned even a minor spot in San Francisco's receiving corps, one of the NFL's weakest in the past two years.

Woods caught only seven passes for 160 yards as a rookie, and new coach Mike Nolan apparently saw him as a prime example of the questionable personnel decisions that got Terry Donahue fired as general manager.
Woods was nearly cut in training camp last season -- surviving only because of the salary-cap hit -- and then placed on injured reserve with a minor thumb problem.
Davis was the 30th pick overall in 2003 and never distinguished himself. He started all 16 games in 2003, when the Chargers were an NFL-worst 4-12. He lost his starting job in 2004, reclaimed it when his replacement, Drayton Florence, got hurt, but then got hurt himself and missed the rest of the season.

Florence beat out Davis before last season.

Davis started 30 of 44 games with the Chargers and had three interceptions.

uhh, I got a WR who sucks...so...I'll trade him for your WR that sucks...

Okay, deal!

I don't know why they wasted their time.

Maybe there was a salary cap reason for the trade? I usually assume that when I can't make heads or tails out of the actual trade itself.

chargers get: WR reshaun woods
49ers get: CB sammy davis

i think the chargers are gonna get the better end of this deal. reshaun still has the potential since he never really got(though never earned either) playing time.

For the past three years, I've been hoping that we would get Woods. I think he's still has the potential to do well in the league... just needs a QB that can throw him the ball. I thought he could get that EASILY here... oh well.

We already have Taylor Jacobs, how many bust draft pick WR's do we need?

This is one of those "A change in scencery might do him some good" type of deals. Both players haven't lived up to expectations with their drafted teams, so the teams are hoping they can get something from another teams disappointment. In almost all of the cases this either never works, or one team gets a player.

that may be the reason why jacobs is still on the team.. if he has a decent camp perhaps he can be traded for someone at another position ?

We couldn't trade TJ for bag of footballs right now. TJ is done...his only hope of a roster spot is a major injury to the top 5 WR ahead of him...(Moss, Lloyd, Randle El, Patten, Thrash)

make that a bag of footballs AND a copy of Madden 06, and you've got yourself a deal!

What is jacobs cap number? Is it worth keeping him?

There are no winners in this trade. Both teams lost horribly.

It would cost $300k just to cut him.

but i would bet that this year's salary would be substantially higher than that...june 1...that should be the date i would guess.

I may have spoke prematurely. His base and signing bonus is $862k, and his release fee is $724 (http://www.thewarpath.net/WarpathRedskinsCap.htm). His signing bonus counts $362k toward the cap this year. I think we could actually free up about $140k by cutting him.

Since he doesn't have a replacement cost (i.e., we don't have to get somebody to fill his position), it is probably doable. On the other hand, if we keep him we've got a 6th receiver or ST guy for $140k.

TJ will stay on the roster through training camp but unless someone gets injured or all his supposed potential finally appears on the field, he will be one of the final cuts in camp, much like McCants was last year.

Good point - after June 1, cutting him frees up $600k in cap room.

that is a good point.. plus, he is a good practice player and no disruption in the locker room. i still think they hope some other team has an injury and is willing to part with a low round pick to get him (wishfull thinking on my part, i know)

Agreed. Personally, I think Snyder doesnt want to sever his relationship with Taylor because he wants him to be a starter for his Arena League team next Spring.

Is there a reason no one has brought up the P word? Maybe Jacobs is all out of it after getting a big shot last year and doing nothing!

If Arnaz Battle could stay healthy for more than 1 game in a row he could be good. He has the skills, but never gets to use 'em.
